This may include trading big names on the roster, such as <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chapmar01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aroldis Chapman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranja01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jarren Duran<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/storytr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trevor Story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One name that has come up is pitcher <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grayso01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonny Gray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The right-hander is having a phenomenal season this year, going 8-1 with a 3.12 ERA and 55 strikeouts. With Gray <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2026\/06\/red-sox-trade-rumors-sonny-gray-open-waiving-clause.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rumored to be okay with opening up his no-trade clause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the same one he opened up to come to Boston, a few questions start to come into play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Where Would Sonny Gray Go?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBbGzyGthh\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4566px; aspect-ratio: 4566\/3044;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, as good as Sonny Gray is, and as much as any team would be happy to have him, Gray would most likely want to go to a contender to contribute for a ring. The one caveat here is that his contract is a bit pricey. While he\u2019s only making 11 million this year, he has a 30 million play option for the 2027 season. Potential landing spots could be teams such as the Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, or the Chicago Cubs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Atlanta Braves<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlanta Braves could be a potential landing spot as they\u2019ve been linked to him this season, and right now, this makes sense. As of now, the Braves\u2019 best right-hander currently active is <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/elderbr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bryce Elder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who has a record of 5-5 and a 3.71 ERA. He\u2019s not a bad pitcher; he has 79 strikeouts. But he doesn\u2019t have the winning track record that Gray has. With star pitcher <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stridsp01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spencer Strider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the injured list currently, as well as <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schwesp01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spencer Schwellenbach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out for the next few months, the lack of depth is really showing. But with all of those names having average-to-below-average seasons, plus with some key <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/07\/early-mlb-injuries-2026-impact-players-expected-to-miss-time\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injuries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hortoca01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cade Horton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is an avenue to look at for them. Given that the Cubs are in the middle of the pack in ERA and bottom ten in quality starts, someone like Gray, with eight quality starts (who would be the leader on the team), could certainly be a beneficial addition for a team looking to make a push for a top Wild Card spot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Milwaukee Brewers\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Milwaukee Brewers are a weird one, considering their pitching staff is already stacked as is and the fact that the Red Sox <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/09\/caleb-durbin-to-boston-trade-details-and-how-he-fits\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have already done a trade with them recently<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But the Brewers are a game and a half back of the best record in baseball (as of June 23rd). They are legitimate contenders this season. With <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harriky01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyle Harrison<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/misioja01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob Misiorowski<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leading this rotation with a combined 16-4 record, adding someone like Gray could push them over the Braves and compete with the Dodgers for the best team in baseball and arguably the team who can win the World Series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Do The Red Sox Need In Return?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBsA3LRMQF\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5184px; aspect-ratio: 5184\/3456;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Red Sox falling apart, the fair assumption is that this season is all but over for them and that they should start rebuilding for the future. Whether that\u2019s prospects or a decent young player that isn\u2019t a key piece of the team they\u2019re dealing with, they need to reset this roster somehow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fair assumption is that there\u2019s not a pressing need for outfielders, seeing as <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/abreuwi02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilyer Abreu,<\/span><\/a> <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rafaece01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ceddanne Rafaela<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anthoro01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roman Anthony<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are all under 26 (at least until September when Rafaela turns 26), as well as prospects like <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=gonzal003jus\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justin Gonzales<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=azocar000end\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enddy Azocar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the system. And they\u2019ve got plenty of pitching depth as well. But the infield is where they struggle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, the number 10 prospect in all of baseball, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=arias-008fra\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Franklin Arias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/24\/red-sox-prospect-fire-call-up\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killing it this season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is supposedly the next guy up, and there are some solid minor leaguers in the infields across the organization, such as <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=godbou000hen\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Henry Godbout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But until they start to prove themselves as they move up, there are questions to be had. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mayerma01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcelo Mayer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s future is up to debate after a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/06\/19\/red-sox-big-three-prospects-overhyped-or-too-soon-to-judge\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lackluster start<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the hyped-up prospect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other middle infield spot (mainly second base, as Mayer plays short currently) has been wide open for a while now. And the catcher position has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/06\/11\/breaking-down-the-red-soxs-catcher-situation-who-should-start\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up for debate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the past couple weeks currently. There are definitely spots to fill on this team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sonny Gray Mock Trades<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOB4oOeeDdP\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4400px; aspect-ratio: 4400\/2933;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h3><b>Trade #1:\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Braves Get: Sonny Gray\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Red Sox Get: <\/b><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=gil---000joh\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>John Gil<\/b><\/a><b> (Braves #10), <\/b><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=bagwel000eth\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ethan Bagwell<\/b><\/a><b> (Braves #21)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the infield core in the minors having some top-end talent, such as Arias and Godbout, but needing a little more depth, someone like Gil is good. He\u2019s at High A currently, so while there\u2019s a need for depth, there\u2019s not a need to rush the 20-year old up to make a splash. The shortstop is hitting .275 with 11 homers and 39 RBIs currently for the Rome Emperors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for Bagwell, as mentioned, there\u2019s plenty of pitching depth. But should some of that be moved off for a big move in the offseason, they could always have more. Despite his 3-3 record in Augusta (Single A), he does have an ERA of 2.90 right now. With how the Boston organization develops pitchers currently, this could be an ideal package.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Trade #2:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Cubs Get: Gray\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Red Sox Get: <\/b><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=ayers-000owe\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Owen Ayers<\/b><\/a><b> (CHC #8)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>OR\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/shawma01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Matt Shaw<\/b><\/a><b>, <\/b><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=southi000ty-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ty Southisene<\/b><\/a><b> (CHC #25)\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two ways this could go. One is a reach, but it would be a great move. And the other could benefit the Sox really well immediately. Here\u2019s the breakdown on both.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Owen Ayers is the top catching prospect for the Cubs and the 8th overall prospect in their system. Now, someone at the top of a positional group may be hard to acquire, especially with not a lot behind <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kellyca02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carson Kelly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But with the Sox\u2019s catcher group up in the air, it feels like they need a solidified answer. Maybe that comes in a Chapman trade. But a catcher who\u2019s hitting .298 with 25 extra base hits in Double-A Knoxville is an offer too good to pass on. He needs some work defensively. Despite his <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/milb\/prospects\/cubs\/owen-ayers-689196\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70-arm grade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he has three errors at catcher in Knoxville, as well as struggling to throw runners out. But it\u2019s a thought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now for Shaw. Shaw has been a name thrown around for a while. The utility player is being pushed out of the infield due to the depth, while the Sox need infield help. Southisene\u2019s a decent minor leaguer just to throw in the deal, batting .311 in High-A currently. It\u2019s not as enticing as the Ayers deal offensively, but Shaw only has one error in 46 innings at second this year. And he\u2019s from Springfield, so having a local player might be nice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Trade #3:\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Brewers Get: Gray<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Red Sox Get: <\/b><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=adamcz000jos\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Josh Adamczewski<\/b><\/a><b> (MIL #10)\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brewers have a surplus of middle infielders in their minor league system, with the top four guys all being able to play between second and short. With the overcrowded minors at that position group, someone like Adamczewski, who can also play the outfield, has a .964 fielding percentage in 685 innings at second for his career. He\u2019s also hitting .331 across High-A and Double-A this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Last Word<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will be interesting to see what happens with Gray. It is ultimately up to him, but if a contender\u2019s interested in him, it would be reasonable if he wanted to waive his no-trade clause to leave. As for the return packages, with how well he\u2019s performing, it\u2019d be expected to get <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">something <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back for them. Given his age and contract, it wouldn\u2019t be a top-five prospect return worthy, but it should be something good.
