They had won eight of their last 10 games, including a sweep of the Cleveland Guardians, a series win over the Toronto Blue Jays (thanks to the heroics of Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt), and another series win over the Chicago White Sox. However, a pair of losses to end the series, including a 10-2 rout on Saturday and an underwhelming 4-1 defeat on Sunday, put a damper on things. The Yankees’ AL East lead, which was as big as 3 1/2 games on Wednesday, is now down to two games. While the Yankees’ lineup has mostly come through without Aaron Judge, losing a series at home to the last-place Reds serves as a wake-up call to its limitations.

Yankees’ AL East Lead is a Good Development, But They Must Keep It

The Yankees continuing to play so well without their captain has been a pleasant surprise for fans this month. So far this season, the team has repeated a familiar pattern under manager Aaron Boone‘s tenure: get off to a hot start in April, then teeter in May and June. In most prior seasons, though, they’ve bounced back to finish the season strong. While the Yankees showed some cracks in May and fell behind Tampa Bay in the standings, they’ve bounced back and largely avoided the “June swoon” so far. However, if the series loss to the Reds bleeds into the rest of the June schedule, New York could be in trouble once again.

The Yankees’ lead atop the AL East, Paul Goldschmidt, & the rehabbing Austin Wells were subjects as Aaron Boone’s pregame presser began Thursday. #YANKSonYES pic.twitter.com/xqPXfIc0xl

— YES Network (@YESNetwork) June 18, 2026

State of the Race

The Legitimate Contenders

As the Yankees’ AL East lead persists for now, let’s take a closer look at the competition. The boys from St. Pete have seized on the energy of being back at Tropicana Field this season, leading to a surprisingly strong start. The Rays’ 26-10 home record is the best in the majors and is a big reason why they’re in line to compete for a division title. A strong rotation and the offensive firepower of players like Yandy Díaz and Junior Caminero are enabling the Rays to compete with any opponent.

Tampa Bay has been the thorn in the Yankees’ side in 2026, taking over the role the Blue Jays played last season. While Toronto has plenty of time to turn it around, they have spent most of this season below .500 and will have to catch fire like they did last year to have a shot at catching the Yankees and Rays.

Following Sunday’s action, the Blue Jays are in a distant third in the East, 8 1/2 games behind the Yankees and 6 1/2 behind the Rays. While they lost one major player this offseason in Bo Bichette, the lineup is still carried by stars Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer, and is bolstered by a host of role players. It’s been a struggle so far in 2026, but they could turn it around at any time.

The Bottom Feeders

Sitting further back in the AL East are the fourth-place Baltimore Orioles (10 1/2 GB) and the last-place Boston Red Sox (14 1/2 GB). Baltimore is struggling to regain the footing it enjoyed in the division not too long ago. The O’s had a 101-win season in 2023 and made another postseason appearance in 2024, but exited early in October both seasons. While sluggers like Pete Alonso and Tyler O’Neill are now in the fold, the Orioles have yet to put it all together this season, and will need an extended hot streak at some point to make a serious run.

For the Yankees’ arch-rivals in Beantown, almost nothing has gone right in 2026. A slow start led to the firing of manager Alex Cora, and while the Red Sox haven’t been horrible under interim manager Chad Tracy, they haven’t been particularly good either. They continue to tread water and appear to be out of postseason contention, barring a huge turnaround. With a mostly young roster and their continued struggles this season, it’s hard to see that happening.

The Last Word

If we’re going to see another Yankees AL East title after they came up just short last season, the first step will be to avoid the June swoon for the rest of this month. The team begins a seven-game road trip on Monday, with three in Detroit against the Tigers, followed by four against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. They then return home to finish the month, facing the Tigers once again.

Here are the probables for the Yankees’ next series against the Tigers. pic.twitter.com/LnJRDZAEx3

— YES Network (@YESNetwork) June 21, 2026

If the Yankees can maintain their division lead for the rest of June and into the All-Star break, it will be an indicator that they are the team to beat, especially when Judge returns.

Main Photo Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images

Entering this weekend’s series against the Cincinnati Reds, the New York Yankees were flying high.
