Some have delivered massively, such as <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/clemero02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roger Clemens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Others have not, like <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderla03.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lars Anderson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But no group was hyped more all in the same year than last year\u2019s minor league group. The Red Sox <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/milb\/news\/farm-system-rankings-2025-preseason?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">had the third highest-ranked<\/a><\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/milb\/news\/farm-system-rankings-2025-preseason?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0farm system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> going into the 2025 season. And they had a pretty good farm system overall. But there were three big names drawing all the attention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anthoro01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roman Anthony<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mayerma01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcelo Mayer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/campbkr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristian Campbell <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were seen as Boston\u2019s \u201cBig Three,&#8221; the first time the Red Sox had that sort of group since 2016 (<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/beninan01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Benintendi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/moncayo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoan Moncada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/deverra01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rafael Devers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). All three made their MLB debuts with Boston last season, and the results were varying. He was selected with a fourth-round pick in the 2023 MLB draft and quickly climbed through the ranks, being listed as the 2024 Minor League Player of the Year. After posting a slash line of .330\/.439\/.558 across three levels (Single A, Double A, and Triple A), he was invited to spring training in 2025, subsequently being called up after.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He got off to a very hot start once the season started. At the end of April, he was awarded the American League Rookie of the Month award, having a slash line of .301\/.407\/.495. The season seemed promising for the newcomer. But that is where the good times ended. He struggled after the success, ending his 2025 season in mid-June with a .221 average, six homers, and 21 RBIs. He would be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/06\/19\/report-red-sox-to-send-kristian-campbell-to-triple-a-after-rough-stretch\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sent down to Worcester <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the rest of the year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some thought he may be an option for this year as utility infielder <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gonzaro01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romy Gonzalez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> went down <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/18\/romy-gonzalez-injury-update-and-who-can-fill-his-spot\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with an injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But that did not end up being the case. In 2026, still in Triple A, he\u2019s hitting .216 with two homers and 21 RBIs, similar statistics to his stint in Boston. And as of now, the Red Sox middle infield group is just too crowded. Post deadline, depending on moves, there could be a chance to come back up <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he turns it around. But it seems unlikely as of now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Marcelo Mayer\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOB8cRxyUzl\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5050px; aspect-ratio: 5050\/2984;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayer was one of the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/all-time-red-sox-top-draft-picks\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highest-selected players<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Red Sox organization ever, being drafted at number four overall in 2021. After what seemed like built-up hype forever, he made his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/05\/24\/report-red-sox-call-up-marcelo-mayer\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">debut in May of 2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taking over at third base for an injured <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/05\/24\/report-red-sox-call-up-marcelo-mayer\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Bregman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But his bat didn\u2019t really translate well, hitting .228 with four homers and 10 RBIs. But his glove work was well above average at third. He only had one error in nearly 250 innings at third in \u201825.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This season, despite <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/27\/red-sox-opening-day-concerns-does-marcelo-mayer-fit-in\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early debate on whether he would even make the Opening Day <\/span><\/a>roster,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0he has been a mainstay in the infield. He\u2019s mostly played at second base, but with <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/storytr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trevor Story <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the IL, he has been spending time at shortstop as well, the position he was drafted at. Batting wise, it\u2019s somewhat of the same. As of June 18th, he\u2019s played 20 more games than in his rookie year (64 vs. 44, respectively). But he\u2019s got more RBIs, one less homer, and one less double. The problem offensively is that he\u2019s batting. 218. Defensively, he\u2019s gotten far more opportunities at second base and has put up a .987 fielding percentage (above league average).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Marcelo Mayer can play defense. \ud83d\udc40 <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wfWJkdK3Wa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/wfWJkdK3Wa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Savage (@Savageboston) <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Savageboston\/status\/2048489576683946015?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">April 26, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not exactly being able to play his natural position full-time, his glove work is pretty good. As mentioned, the problem is his bat, but when the whole team\u2019s struggling, it\u2019s a little hard to catch on fire. That being said, since he was<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/fannation\/mlb\/fastball\/news\/false-ketel-marte-marcelo-mayer-rumor-sent-mlb-into-a-frenzy-pat3\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brought up in trade rumors recently,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it\u2019s tough to say exactly what the problem is. Is it him, or is it the coaching staff?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Roman Anthony\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOB4bTfGGxL\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 7037px; aspect-ratio: 7037\/4692;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That leaves Roman Anthony. The most hyped up Red Sox prospect since Mookie Betts, Anthony was drafted back in the second round of 2022. Ranking as high as the number one prospect in all of baseball, his hype seemed to culminate when he hit a nearly 500-foot grand slam on June 7th, 2025. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/06\/09\/roman-anthony-baseballs-no-1-prospect-called-up-by-red-sox\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two days later<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he made his debut for Boston, becoming a major contributor to help their season turnaround.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the call up, the Red Sox sat at 32-36. They proceeded to go on a 57-37 run the rest of the season. Anthony played his role well, hitting .292 and hitting eight homers while driving in 32. However, he also drew 40 walks and had an amazing .396 on base percentage. He was originally hyped up for his hitting, and despite an injury that kept him out of the Wild Card Series, he had made his impact on this team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But 2026 was a different story. He struggled at the plate, he had some <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bad <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">errors at the beginning of the season, and then came the mysterious <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/07\/roman-anthony-injured-wrist-mickey-gasper-call-up\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injury news<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What was a sprained ring finger became a torn ligament in his finger as he continues to try to swing but still feels discomfort. Also, post Devers trade, there was a major question of where the Red Sox\u2019s power would come from this year. Many eyes turned to Anthony to see if he could massively improve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s understandable why people did, but it\u2019s also worth noting that Anthony is only 22 years old. To be putting the faith of the franchise in the hands of a 22-year-old seems a little unfair, even if he had just finished 2025 as a Rookie of the Year finalist. It\u2019s almost as if the 500-foot homer made everyone believe that this kid would fix everything immediately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Roman Anthony just hit a 500 foot grand slam in Triple-A \ud83d\ude33 <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9KZGj6ocAP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/9KZGj6ocAP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Talkin&#8217; Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TalkinBaseball_\/status\/1931515641426481197?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 8, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>The Last Word: Too Much Hype or Too Early?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, it\u2019s almost necessary to express that one and a half years is not nearly enough time to judge whether a professional athlete is a boom or a bust type of prospect. That\u2019s the case in any sport, not just baseball. But there has been a dialogue around the three and whether or not these three are busts or not this early on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s clear to see why people think that. Campbell got an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/04\/02\/red-sox-ink-infielder-contract\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extension shortly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after being brought up. The same thing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/08\/06\/red-sox-lock-up-roman-anthony-eight-year-extension\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">happened with Anthony <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as well. Giving star minor league players who are unproven at the majors is a little sketchy, especially when one gets sent back down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, it\u2019s a case-by-case basis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campbell: Too much hype. Based on how he\u2019s performing post-Boston while back in Worcester, there was a little too much.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayer: Slightly too much. Decent player but seems to be best when on defense. Next year will be the real test, with an entirely new staff.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony: Slightly overhyped, but not his fault. Between fan expectations and injuries, it\u2019s hard to see him being that guy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just yet. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He will be a solid player when healthy, though.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While all of them still have time to improve, it\u2019s something to keep an eye on for future prospects like <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=arias-008fra\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Franklin Arias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=eyanso000ant\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Eyanson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although very good and getting hype in the minors, so did these three. And look how discourse around them is now.
