Since beloved franchise star<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pedrodu01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dustin Pedroia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> retired, the glove at second has gone through several players, from <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holtbr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock Holt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hernaen02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kike Hernandez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/perazjo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jose Peraza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/arroych01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian Arroyo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Since<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/campbkr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kristian Campbell<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/06\/19\/report-red-sox-to-send-kristian-campbell-to-triple-a-after-rough-stretch\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flamed out quickly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the majors (at least for now), the Red Sox have found themselves in that cycle again. However, one of the more consistent names over the past couple of seasons seems to be coming back soon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Romy Gonzalez Starts Rehab Stint In Portland\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBhcpM6Hkj\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3423px; aspect-ratio: 3423\/2282;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/\/players\/g\/gonzaro01.shtml?__hstc=213859787.a282f45c532ebf8b058a81818e590fcf.1777694387214.1781382634622.1781717145921.12&amp;__hssc=213859787.5.1781717145921&amp;__hsfp=4d3ca1ff55660fbd10e31aa497467faa\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romy Gonzalez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was one of the more important bench\/utility players on last year\u2019s playoff team. In 96 games he hit .305 with nine homers and 53 RBIs. Along with <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/refsnro01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rob Refsnyder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he was a key piece outside the starting nine in the Red Sox\u2019s push to the playoffs last year. Defensively, he had three errors in 42 games, with a DRS of -1. As seen, he\u2019s not the best fielder. But his ability to make contact (.378 BABIP) and get on base (.343) is what makes him valuable on this squad. This is seen through his 2.1 WAR, which ranked ninth among Boston batters in &#8217;25 (eighth if <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/deverra01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rafael Devers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is excluded).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has yet to make his debut this season, however, with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/18\/romy-gonzalez-injury-update-and-who-can-fill-his-spot\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">left shoulder injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that\u2019s kept him out since the end of last season. But he can do some great things with the Sox. He\u2019s in the 95th percentile for average exit velocity at 93.3 mph and the 99th percentile for Hard Hit % at 57.3%. His <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/romy-gonzalez-663853?stats=splits-r-hitting-mlb&amp;season=2025\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spray chart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows he\u2019s versatile and can hit it to any area of the field.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s able to hit breaking pitches really well, bolstering a .327 average in \u201825. But the key thing for this team is he can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hit lefties. He\u2019s not a slugger or anything, but a .331 average is more than serviceable. With RISP, he hit .315. It just seems that batting-wise, excluding power, any problems that they have this year could be solved by Gonzalez coming back to this roster.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Red Sox&#8217;s Current Second Base Situation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOB8cRxyUzl\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5050px; aspect-ratio: 5050\/2984;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, second base is wide open for this Boston team. With <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/storytr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trevor Story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> going down with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/24\/red-sox-injury-updates-estimated-returns-on-star-players\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and having then-second baseman <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mayerma01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcelo Mayer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> move back to his natural position at shortstop, there\u2019s a plethora of guys playing the position so far: <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kineris01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isiah Kiner-Falefa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/monasan01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andruw Monasterio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/seiglan01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Seigler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sogarni01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nick Sogard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all have taken time there this season too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it would be nice to have consistency at the position. Kiner-Falefa\u2019s on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/05\/isiah-kiner-falefa-to-boston-how-he-fits-with-the-team\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one-year deal <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">currently, while everyone else is around till at least 2029, including Gonzalez. While obviously, not all of them can be up in the majors at the same time, if Gonzalez has a return to form upon coming back to Boston, he would be the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/stathead\/baseball\/versus-finder.fcgi?request=1&amp;seasons_type=forall&amp;year_min=2025&amp;year_max=2025&amp;player_id1=gonzal002rom&amp;player_id2=monast000and&amp;player_id3=sogard000nic&amp;player_id4=kiner-000isa&amp;player_id5=seigle000ant\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best option<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, almost by far.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Last Word: Will Romy Gonzalez Be Good Post-Rehab?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only time will tell whether he can return to proper form at the majors immediately after being out so long. And while defensively, there\u2019s not a whole lot to look at (-4 DRS for his career at that position). But his productive bat would add a breath of fresh air to this lineup looking for consistent hitting that isn\u2019t Abreu, Contreras, or <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rafaece01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ceddane Rafaela<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This offense, while being 11th in batting average, is struggling in almost every other department, ranking in the bottom 10 for hits, OBP, and OPS and second worst in homers, RBIs, runs, and walks.
