For a team that made the Wild Card Series and looked like they were taking a step in the right direction, they didn\u2019t get big names like people expected them to. Aside from a couple of big trades with St. Louis for <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/contrwi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willson Contreras<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grayso01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonny Gray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they went for quieter (but solid, at least in their eyes) names, rather than resigning Alex Bregman or getting someone like<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alonspe01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pete Alonso<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What Should the Red Sox Do with Struggling Third Baseman?<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2026\/02\/11173916\/GettyImages-2260564213-1024x683.jpeg?width=1248&amp;quality=70&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"Meet newest Red Sox infielder Caleb Durbin: How he fits and his ...\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third baseman <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/durbica01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caleb Durbin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was one of those names. After <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/06\/15\/sf-giants-acquire-rafael-devers-red-sox\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trading<\/span><\/a> <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/deverra01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rafael Devers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> midseason last year and letting Bregman walk in the offseason, they were in desperate need of a new guy at the hot corner. In February, they struck a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers to acquire Durbin, Andruw Monasterio, and Anthony Siegler in exchange <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a return package that included <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harriky01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyle Harrison<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (who they received in the Devers trade).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Durbin\u2019s Struggles At The Plate\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, this season, Durbin\u2019s bat has easily been the worst part of this trade. For a guy that had a decent rookie season, with a slash line of .256\/.334\/.387, there weren&#8217;t really star expectations for his sophomore season. But there was some expectation that he&#8217;d be a reliable bat that could gel with the rest of the lineup. But as of June 15th, he\u2019s batting under the Mendoza line at .194. At one point last month, he was the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/mlb\/boston-red-sox\/lineup-caleb-durbin-kansas-city-royals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worst-qualified hitter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in all of baseball.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Struggles Continue in June\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite one great game against the Tampa Bay Rays, in which he went three for four and hit two home runs (improving his season total to three homers), he went back into a slump. This past weekend against the Texas Rangers, he went 0-10 with one run, one RBI, and one walk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a strange development after <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/judgeaa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aaron Judge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s personal hitting coach Richard Schenck posted a video of Durbin working with him this past Wednesday and he seemed to be swinging better. The results were there in Tampa, as he went four for nine in the series. Not to make excuses but in the Texas series, he did go up against two former All-Stars in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/degroja01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob DeGrom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/eovalna01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nathan Eovaldi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this weekend, so it was a tough part of the rotation to go against already, especially for a guy struggling this much.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Where I found him.<\/p>\n<p>Where did I get him?<\/p>\n<p>Watch the head.<\/p>\n<p>MLB allowed this head movement.<\/p>\n<p>Private instructor encouraged that head movement.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped that head movement. <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dgD95oLnvh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/dgD95oLnvh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Richard Schenck, The Heretic JFD PPP LQC TTE. \ud83d\ude42 (@Teacherman1986) <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Teacherman1986\/status\/2064811213796552956?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 10, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>What Should The Red Sox Do With Durbin?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durbin\u2019s a tricky player, as stated above; his bat is really struggling, and that\u2019s almost enough reason to bench literally any other player with those statistics. But his glove is amazing. He <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/archive.fieldingbible.com\/DRSLeaderboard\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranks second<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in baseball, and first in the AL, in defensive runs saved at third base this year with eight (Matt Chapman has 13). He also ranks fourth in fielding percentage for third basemen this year. When comparing those numbers to the last full seasons of Bregman and Devers at third with the Sox:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durbin (so far): eight DRS, .975 Fielding %<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bregman (2025): one DRS, .969 Fielding %<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Devers (2024): -9 DRS, .960 Fielding %<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durbin is clearly the better third baseman <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right now.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The glaring problem is just his bat. So that opens up a question: if there comes a time when Durbin needs to be benched for an extended period of time, what would the infield look like? If looking at in-house production, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sogarni01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nick Sogard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hits better and has done decently well at third. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mayerma01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcelo Mayer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has to play short with <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mayerma01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trevor Story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/24\/red-sox-injury-updates-estimated-returns-on-star-players\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injury,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so it\u2019s best not to move him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside help however could be interesting. Someone like <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paredis01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaac Paredes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who Boston seems to be in endless rumors with, could be a major improvement at the plate, at least compared to Durbin currently. But it would also be a major downgrade at third, with his -3 DRS. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/shawma01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt Shaw <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could be an interesting choice. Due to the Cubs stacked infield, as well as bringing in Bregman, he\u2019s been moved all over the field. However, in his rookie year in \u201825 at third base, he posted a DRS of 12 (the third-best mark <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/archive.fieldingbible.com\/DRSLeaderboard\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in baseball at that position<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Last Word: Should Durbin Be Starting?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Durbin\u2019s struggles were the clear sore thumb around this team currently, there would be a resounding yes to the question of benching him. But honestly, it\u2019s not the case. And despite team president Sam Kennedy\u2019s <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/sam-kennedy-acknowledges-red-sox-disappointing-season\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">words on WEEI last week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s still uncertain what their deadline plan is. There\u2019s still plenty of time for a turnaround with 93 games left in the season, and Boston is just five games out of the last Wild Card spot. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For right now, the best bet is to wait and see on Durbin. If the bat starts to improve, even slightly into the .220\u2019s, that\u2019s fine.
