This season Turner has a .219/.269/.330 line with seven home runs and 21 RBI in 70 games this season entering play on June 15. Turner has a career worst 65 wRC+ and a career worst .265 BABIP this year. Furthermore the .598 OPS that Turner currently has is also a career worst and the seventh worst in baseball among qualified players entering play on June 15. Turner also has the seventh worst OBP among qualified players in that span. To add Turner has the third worst wRC+ and fourth worst OPS among qualified right-handed hitters.

The Phillies underperforming defensively is also thanks in part due to Turner. This season Turner has -4 DRS/-3 OAA/-3 FRV at shortstop. For comparison in 2025 Turner had 2 DRS/16 OAA/10 FRV at shortstop. 2025 is probably an outlier year for Turner defensively though. Since Turner joined the Phillies he has the worst DRS total among qualified shortstops in that span. Turner has -26 DRS/6 OAA/-4 FRV at shortstop in that span. The Phillies shortstop quietly underperforming defensively is arguably more concerning than the lack of success at the plate. Either way the massive contract the Phillies gave Turner before the 2023 season has not aged well.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9" image-id="fwuQYVlPDXQw" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5000px; aspect-ratio: 5000/3604;" ></smartframe-embed>

Phillies Shortstop Quietly Underperforming

The Need For A Reset Soon

Turner could use a few off days to reset himself. The Phillies did something similar with Alec Bohm in early May and it has paid off so far. Bohm has a .281/.326/.504 line with seven home runs and 19 RBI in 32 games since May 9 when he returned to the lineup. Additionally Bohm has a 127 wRC+ and a .278 BABIP in that span. For comparison Bohm had a .159/.227/.206 line with one home run and 15 RBI in his first 35 games this season. Bohm had a 21 wRC+ and a .179 BABIP during that stretch. Edmundo Sosa would fill in for Turner for a few games in this scenario. The Phillies shortstop quietly underperforming can be addressed.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB9gaU6ciJ" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072/2076;" ></smartframe-embed>

Recent Injury Changing The Equation

Adolis García being placed on the 60-day injured list means Turner and other right-handed batters will need to step up. With García on the injured list Derek Hill and Gabriel Rincones Jr. will be platooning in the outfield with Sosa getting additional reps there. While García could have been performing better at the plate before the injury him being out creates an additional weak spot in the order. This will also make it harder to move Turner down in the order for an extended period of time. The Phillies lineup needs a right-handed hitter in the top three of the order to split up the left-handed hitters.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9" image-id="fwuQY9U3LQK3" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2928px; aspect-ratio: 2928/2410;" ></smartframe-embed>

The Role Turner Has In Team Wide Issues

The Phillies hitting divide has contributed to the lack of success against left-handed pitching. This season Turner has a .529 OPS along with a 52 wRC+ against left-handed pitchers. Additionally the Phillies as a team have a .675 OPS and an 88 wRC+ this season. For comparison against right-handed pitchers Turner has a .631 OPS and a 71 wRC+ this year. Overall the Phillies have a .685 OPS and an 88 wRC+ against right-handed pitchers. The Phillies shortstop quietly underperforming is part of why the club has a league worst .590 OPS and a league worst 63 wRC+ from their right-handed hitters this season.

Mandatory Credit: Kyle Ross-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Phillies shortstop quietly underperforming has hurt the team as Trea Turner needs to turn things around.
