The St. Louis Cardinals announced Friday afternoon that they are calling up prospect Blaze Jordan to the major leagues. Jordan was hitting .313 this season with the Memphis Redbirds in the Cardinals\u2019 minor leagues.<\/p>\n

The Cardinals acquired Jordan last season in a trade with the Boston Red Sox. The Cardinals, sellers at last season\u2019s trade deadline, traded pitcher Steve Matz in exchange for Jordan. The prospect has spent some time playing third base this season despite being a first baseman.<\/p>\n

Jordan will start on Friday against the Minnesota Twins. He will play third base and wear #33. Furthermore, he is now playing for the general manager who originally drafted him<\/a>, Chaim Bloom.<\/p>\n

Additional Roster Moves<\/h3>\n

In addition to calling up Jordan, the Cardinals are calling up a pitcher, Chris Roycroft. The team is optioning Nolan Gorman and Hunter Dobbins to Memphis. Gorman has struggled this season despite opportunities to start following the Nolan Arenado trade this winter. Dobbins was called up to be the team\u2019s sixth starter in their pitching rotation. This does not mean Dobbins will not make his next start. The Cardinals may just want the roster spot for Roycroft to take in the bullpen, but they will make a corresponding move to call up Dobbins for his next start.<\/p>\n

Infielder Ramon Urias is being transferred to the 60-day injured list<\/a>. Urias injured his shoulder during a rehab assignment last week.<\/p>\n

Jordan in the Majors<\/h3>\n

Jordan will look to add some offensive pop to a lineup that has been swinging a hot bat lately, but could use some additional support. The team scored 20 runs over three games this week against the New York Mets.<\/p>\n

The main reason for this call-up seems to be Gorman. His struggles have made it hard to justify his being in the lineup. The Cardinals have had hopes for Gorman, and he has shown his potential in the past, but it has just not been working this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jordan is the second major prospect to make his debut with the Cardinals this season, following JJ Wetherholt\u2019s debut on Opening Day.<\/p>\n
