In April, they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/25\/red-sox-announce-coaching-changes-cora-among-the-fired\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fired<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> former manager <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/coraal01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Cora<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, thinking he was the issue. As a subsequent replacement, they brought up Worcester Red Sox manager <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/tracych99.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chad Tracy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to take over. Despite Tracy doing slightly better than Cora in a 27-game span (which is how many games Cora managed this season before being fired), the Red Sox still struggled in that span and continue to do so now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what continues to be the problem then? The pitching has remained good (for the most part) despite an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/29\/red-sox-roster-moves-garrett-crochet-injury-nate-eaton-call-up\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crochga01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garrett Crochet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The lineup had some holes even when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/24\/red-sox-injury-updates-estimated-returns-on-star-players\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fellow injured stars<\/span><\/a> <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anthoro01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roman Anthony<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/storytr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trevor Story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were playing. So many fans turn their heads toward Breslow. And recent updates have shown that the controversial GM won\u2019t be going anywhere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Red Sox Keeping General Manager Breslow Despite Displeased Fanbase<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/AP23306605163951.webp\" alt=\"Red Sox\u2019 Craig Breslow Faces Major Concern Inside Organization - HEAVY\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per Tim Healey of the Boston Globe (subscription required for the article linked in the tweet), the Red Sox are not considering firing Breslow. Breslow was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2023\/10\/26\/red-sox-hire-breslow-baseball-operations\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hired<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> back in 2023 after the firing of now St Louis Cardinals GM Chaim Bloom. He turned names like <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/steelju01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justin Steele<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hendrky01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyle Hendricks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alzolad01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adbert Alzolay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into reliable pitchers at the very least in Chicago. The excitement for a change was seen early.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Breslow\u2019s Questionable Transaction History<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While he has drafted pitchers very well, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/17\/red-sox-aces-homegrown\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">homegrown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stars Connelly Early and Payton Tolle, as well as rising prospects such as Anthony Eyanson, he has struggled to acquire<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0hitters. First comes the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/salech01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Sale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trade. Sure, he was injury-prone at the time. But when he pitched, he was still very good. So good in fact, that he won the Cy Young Award in his first year with the Atlanta Braves. And in return, the Red Sox got infielder <\/span><a  href=\"http:\/\/baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/salech01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaughn Grissom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who struggled at the major league level but had a decent minor league stint with Worcester. Grissom was then traded to the Los Angeles Angels for outfielder <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=jackso003isa\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah Jackson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then comes the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/deverra01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rafael Devers<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/06\/15\/sf-giants-acquire-rafael-devers-red-sox\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This one is more complicated, as, given his attitude towards a position change, something needed to be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">done. But for a guy who was the best power hitter on the team and a yearly 30-homer\/100-RBI threat, the return package was underwhelming. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hicksjo03.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jordan Hicks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was disappointing here (some may say bad), and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=bello-001jos\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jose Bello<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won\u2019t come up for a long time, if Boston even keeps him. The two good players acquired from the trade, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harriky01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyle Harrison<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=tibbs-000jam\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Tibbs III<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are no longer in the organization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harrison was sent to Milwaukee in the Caleb Durbin trade and is having a Cy Young-like year, while Tibbs was<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/07\/31\/dodgers-trade-starting-pitcher-dustin-may-red-sox\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Los Angeles Dodgers for <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/maydu01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dustin May<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also not with Boston) and is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crushing <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it in Triple-A. The point here isn\u2019t that they traded stars away. It\u2019s that they got practically nothing in return, or didn\u2019t keep the valuable players they received.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credit where credit\u2019s due, he did pull off a trade for an ace in Crochet and get a solid catcher in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/narvaca01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carlos Narvaez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But aside from Willson Contreras, additions like Durbin and Isiah Kiner-Falefa to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve this lineup have been seen as questionable moves. The lack of a right-handed bat is being exposed, and when news comes out that they <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/boston-red-sox\/news\/kyle-schwarber-reveals-disappointing-offseason-pursuit-red-sox\/6fc516baa459924086c1575c\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">didn\u2019t offer a contract<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to someone like <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schwaky01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyle Schwarber<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who was <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.wcvb.com\/article\/kyle-schwarber-red-sox-kyle-from-waltham\/38006524\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beloved in his short stint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here in Boston back in \u201821, it makes people question Breslow\u2019s capabilities more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Ownership Possibly Questioning<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, while news has come out that they\u2019re not considering firing Breslow, there have also been rumors that ownership may be trying to overstep him. According to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/boston-red-sox\/news\/buster-olney-reveals-shocking-update-red-sox-trade-rumors\/c56e1c7491250bda38944c19\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent reports <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from Buster Olney, Red Sox ownership also acknowledges the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/28\/four-outside-the-box-trade-candidates-to-turn-the-red-sox-offense-around\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need for a right-handed bat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has apparently contacted other owners directly to make a trade. Now, the name was not said, nor is it confirmed. However, this isn\u2019t the first time that ownership has questioned Breslow\u2019s power.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former GM (and now part-owner of Fenway Sports Group) Theo Epstein was rumored to be disappointed with<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Breslow&#8217;s analytical approach. Based on the Red Sox\u2019s current results and where they could be, it\u2019s easy to agree. Breslow, however, shut down those rumors. Epstein has been a working partner of Breslow since he hired him in Chicago. But given his approach and the lack of results, it\u2019s not far-fetched to believe there could be a problem, and it\u2019s being downplayed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Last Word: Should Breslow\u2019s Job Be Safe?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now comes the tricky part of the situation: Breslow\u2019s job is currently considered to be safe, but should it be? This now breaks into two options:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Option A: Breslow keeps going with his analytical approach and handles the trade deadline, for better or worse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Option B: Breslow gets fired, and they have to figure out who his replacement is quickly (possibly Theo?)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either situation isn\u2019t exactly ideal; if the replacement isn\u2019t Epstein, they have to conduct a search and figure out his strategy for the team within a month and a half. Unless they can magically turn it around in June and July as they did in 2025, it\u2019s going to be a lose-lose situation.
