The gap in the American League West division race has gotten bigger even as the team has gotten healthier.<\/p>\n<p>However, it wasn\u2019t a complete waste, as the Astros ended up with their wildest win of the season in an 11-9 thriller on Wednesday night at Daikin Park. Houston seemed completely dead in the water throughout this game, having gone down 8-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Astros were 0-32 so far in the 2026 season having trailed through seven innings. That somehow changed against all odds as the Astros stormed back on offense and snatched the game right out of the Pirates\u2019 hands. Here\u2019s how the magical Astros comeback happened.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1200px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBCVHKzlTu\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2749px; aspect-ratio: 2749\/1834;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h2>The Incredible Astros Comeback<\/h2>\n<p>This was supposed to be a special pitching duel between two of the best pitchers in baseball at the moment: <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/arrigsp01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spencer Arrighetti<\/a> and <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/skenepa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Skenes<\/a>. Most believed this would be a low-scoring game, but lo and behold, baseball strikes again. 20 total runs, 26 total hits combined between both teams. Neither starter could get to five innings and they were not even the story of the game.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It was a comeback out of nowhere for the Astros. Down 8-3 with two outs in the seventh, <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paredis01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaac Paredes<\/a> blasted a two-run homer to the Crawford Boxes that cut the deficit down to three. However, the Pirates added another run in the eighth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now trailing 9-5, the Astros quickly got down two outs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to two strikeouts. Second baseman <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=allenni02,allen-006nic,allenni01&amp;search=Nick+Allen&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Allen<\/a> steps to the plate. He isn\u2019t known for his hitting at all, but has performed well recently. Allen got the party started with a 383-foot double. It turned into an amazing eight-inning rally, all with two outs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Whole Astros Offense Rallied<\/h2>\n<p><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vazquch01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christian V\u00e1zquez<\/a> has <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/20\/how-christian-vasquez-signing-can-help-the-astros\/\" target=\"_self\">played well<\/a> this season, and he delivered again with an RBI double <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/gameday\/pirates-vs-astros\/2026\/06\/03\/824188\/live?partnerId=LR_box\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on a 2-2 count<\/a> that made it 9-6. Still a long shot. It went back to the top of the order, and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/penaje02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeremy Pe<span>\u00f1<\/span>a<\/a> drew a walk. Now it got interesting. With two men on, here came the best hitter in baseball at the moment in <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alvaryo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yordan Alvarez<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s known for his clutch ability, and Alvarez came through with an RBI single that scored V\u00e1zquez. It was suddenly 9-7 with Pe<span>\u00f1<\/span>a at third and pinch runner <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/coleza01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Cole<\/a> at first. <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=walkech02,walker008chr&amp;search=Christian+Walker&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christian Walker<\/a>, the team RBI leader after his <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/09\/christian-walkers-hot-start\/\" target=\"_self\">hot start<\/a>, stepped up and played small ball. He got on base with an infield single, and that was good enough for Pe<span>\u00f1<\/span>a to score. The Astros got it on Paredes\u2019 at-bat, where a wild pitch from <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sotogr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gregory Soto<\/a> on a 3-1 count brought Cole home, and the game was suddenly tied. The big blow came from young second-year outfielder <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithca07.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Smith<\/a>. The team batted around, and the stage was all set for the top of the ninth. The ballpark lights dimmed, and whatever fans were left got to witness the fireman returning.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That is the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/06\/03\/astros-back-bullpen\/\" target=\"_self\">season debut<\/a> of <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/haderjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Hader<\/a>. It seemed impossible just 30 minutes ago that Hader would come on for the save in this game. He successfully got his first save of the season with a groundout, strikeout, and another groundout. Their first win of 2026 also came in epic comeback fashion against the Los Angeles Angels. They were staring down a 0-3 start after trailing 6-0 halfway through the game. Houston scored three runs in the fifth and eight runs in the sixth to come back and win. That final score was also 11-9.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It was a magical win worth remembering, but Houston wasn\u2019t able to build off the momentum as it lost the Pirates series the next day. However, it shows the potential of the offense and how they were able to string great at-bats together. There\u2019s no doubt the team can score. The Astros just need more consistency.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Alvarez went 4-for-5 in the Astros comeback and added onto his MLB-leading numbers. Smith has shown improvement.
