The starting rotation has not lived up to its promise, which has become a big issue. The rotation has struggled to limit runs, which has contributed to the rough May stretch they have been going through. Unfortunately, every attempt to end the slump has not worked out well. There is a long way to go until the trade deadline, but if the Cubs wish to become true contenders this year, then they need to start doing their due diligence.

Some of the Top Cubs Trade Targets

Chicago has had very little success with the rotation. Much of this is due to injuries; most recently, Edward Cabrera went on the injured list with a blister on his middle finger. Any of the starters who have stayed healthy have struggled to maintain consistency and string together meaningful games. The one bright side is that Ben Brown has had a breakout season. With the injuries and poor performances in mind, there are plenty of game-changing Cubs trade targets.

Tarik Skubal

Obviously, Tarik Skubal would be one of the top Cubs’ trade targets that they could acquire. Before getting injured, it was business as usual for the star pitcher. He was 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA and 45 strikeouts. His talent is undeniable, and if the Tigers are actually looking at moving him, then he is the top trade target. The issues would be if they actually wanted to trade him, and if they did, it would be hard to see the Cubs having enough to acquire him. It would likely take multiple elite prospects, which Chicago does not have available. He could be the Ace the team needs, but it may just cost too much.

.@JonHeyman‘s top potential landing spot for Tarik Skubal if he’s moved?

The Chicago Cubs 🐻 pic.twitter.com/PtvcDuAMZI

— B/R Walk-Off (@BRWalkoff) May 27, 2026

Joe Ryan

Joe Ryan has been one of the more popular names among Cubs fans, and that interest began much earlier than this season. Last year at the trade deadline, Ryan was heavily rumored to be traded, and Chicago was a popular destination. This season, despite an injury, he has continued his success. He has a 3-3 record with a 2.94 ERA. Since returning from his injury, he has shown his dominant stuff, including the most recent start against the White Sox.\\

Final line for Joe Ryan tonight for the #MNTwins

7.2 IP
5 H
2 ER
0 BB
9 Ks

Really good outing for him, other than an unfortunate game-tying home run he allowed to Murakami in the 8th pic.twitter.com/8J2uBlP3X0

— SleeperTwins (@SleeperMLBTwins) May 27, 2026

Unlike Skubal, Ryan has a better chance at being traded. The Twins are not in a position to be a serious contender. Although he is under team control for a few more years, it may not be too much of a shock if they sell off a lot of their top players. This could make him one of the top Cubs trade targets for 2026. Unfortunately, his price is likely to be too high as well. It would be a very aggressive move that could push the team over the top, but it would also strip the farm system down completely.

Freddy Peralta

Freddy Peralta has been another popular Cubs trade target in 2026. His time with the Mets has not been as expected, as he is 3-4 with a 3.52 ERA. These numbers are not bad by any means, just not as elite as they were hoping for. This, combined with the Mets’ lack of winning, might make him the most likely of these three pitchers for the Cubs to acquire. The fact that he is a free agent after this year makes him a rental addition, which carries a lower cost.

It would still take some of the team’s top prospects, but it does give the team a shot at getting an elite pitcher. If he can return to form, then Peralta could slot in nicely as one of the top pitchers on the team. At the very least, he gives Chicago a quality, reliable option. Additionally, if it went well, the Cubs could try to bring him back. Another reason that this could make sense is that Peralta played under Craig Counsell for the Brewers. This familiarity may be enough to entice the team to take the risk in making a blockbuster trade.

Cubs Trade Targets

While any of these three pitchers would not come cheaply, they would all boost the chances of winning in 2026. They may be on the higher end of the spectrum as far as Cubs trade targets go, but they also offer the team the highest upside. To win it all, sometimes you need to swing for the fences. Chicago has been more aggressive over the past year, which may mean they finally feel confident making blockbuster trades. The starting rotation will surely be a storyline to monitor for the rest of 2026, as it very well could determine the direction of the team.

Main Photo Credits: Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Cubs trade targets are becoming an increasingly important topic as the 2026 season goes on.
