If 2026 is over already, then the prudent move would be to dedicate the remainder of the campaign to building for 2027. However, improving results on the field and a weak American League means the Tigers are far from eliminated yet.

Number One Prospect Max Clark Making a Case for a Call-up

Coming into the season, the plan was to allow Parker Meadows to get a good, long look at center field following an injury-ravaged 2025. Last year, the center fielder was limited to just 58 games after a breakout 2024 campaign. His elite defense is missed in the outfield, and there have long been hopes that he could be the center fielder of the future in Detroit. With Meadows down injured, the first man up would be Javier Baez, who filled in admirably in the first half of last season. However, Baez is also on the IL recovering from an ankle sprain.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://lastwordonsports.com/baseball/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2026/05/USATSI_28303652.webp" alt="Detroit Tigers outfielder Max Clark batting against the New York Yankees during the fifth inning during Spring Training at George M. The results have been less than convincing. Through 44 games, Vierling is hitting just .216 and has put up -0.3 WAR. Vierling has been much better defensively, however, and has been swinging better of late compared to the start of the season. While the organization believes in Vierling’s abilities as a player, a team with postseason hopes can’t be satisfied by his lack of production.

Clark is projected to not only be an elite defender in the vein of Meadows, but he has also been swinging a hot bat at Triple-A Toledo in 2026. Through 44 games at the highest minor league level, Clark is posting a .742 OPS and owns a .272 batting average. He’s slugged just two home runs, but has managed to hit safely in 11 of 12 games following play on Sunday, May 24th.

Max Clark’s early home run got the momentum building for the Hens, earning the Holy @sheetz Play of the Game for tonight! pic.twitter.com/Lr895AqBnX

— Toledo Mud Hens (@MudHens) May 25, 2026

When Will We See Max Clark?

It’s not even June, so few, if any, baseball executives will be ready to stick a fork in 2026. This means it is unlikely that we will see the Tigers call up Clark just yet. His inaugural season at Triple-A hasn’t all been roses. Clark went just 8-for-58 in a 15-game span from April 18-May 7, good for just a .138 batting average. His 70-grade speed is impressive, and has flashed the leather impressively for Toledo, but the up-and-down offense will likely be enough to keep him in the minors for most, if not all, of this summer.

Beyond thinking of the player’s development, Detroit will also feel like their nightmare run may be coming to an end. Troy Melton just made his season debut on Sunday in Baltimore and went 5 2/3 innings yielding just one run. Casey Mize and Keider Montero have both impressed with their stuff this season, and Tarik Skubal is already back throwing following his surgery. With their strong starting rotation now nearly back in place, plus competing in a weak division, the Tigers will feel they have every chance at a playoff spot.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9" image-id="fwuQUo1yzrp8" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5424px; aspect-ratio: 5424/3616;" ></smartframe-embed>

The offense is still a concern, however relying on another rookie to solve that would be unfair to Clark. Forcing Clark to debut while under the burden of a massive losing streak would be unnecessary right now, and would perhaps even do more harm than good.
