The Red Sox have had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/12\/2026-mlb-draft-red-sox\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plenty of different selections from different outlets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But this recent mock draft from MLB Pipeline has yet another player, a more intriguing one.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Red Sox Projected To Take Massachusetts Pitcher at Pick #20<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Red Sox have the 20th overall pick in this year\u2019s draft, and with that pick, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/mlb-pipeline-2026-mock-draft-may-21\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MLB Pipeline projects them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taking star pitcher <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/milb\/prospects\/draft\/brody-bumila-837269\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brody Bumila<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out of Bishop Feehan in Massachusetts. They have had a recent history of drafting locally, drafting Wake Forest third baseman and Newton native <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=winnay000jac\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack Winnay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But Bumila would be different. He\u2019s a left-handed pitcher, and while the Sox already have a lefty-dominant rotation, this kid would be too good to pass up on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Texas commit has been a force this season, throwing a seven-inning no-hitter with 20 strikeouts earlier this season. His recent start against Xaverian saw him strike out 14 in six innings, although he unraveled in the seventh and allowed four runs on one hit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">20-strikeout\u203c\ufe0f no-hitter and up to 100 mph from 6-foot-9 Brody Bumila.<\/p>\n<p>2026 high school LHP was overpowering tonight for Bishop Feehan in Massachusetts. He throws hard, hitting 100 miles per hour consistently with his fastball. And it\u2019s his go-to swing and miss pitch. The main problem is the lack of a great secondary pitch. According to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7295270\/2026\/05\/21\/brody-bumila-mlb-draft-scouting-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keith Law <\/span><\/a>of The Athletic, his slider ranges from<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the low to mid-80s. He also doesn\u2019t have complete control of his changeup. (Subscription Needed)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, there\u2019s some injury history with him. In his sophomore year, he tore his UCL and had to undergo Tommy John surgery. Taking a player that high after a major surgery like that is a bit risky, but if he\u2019s throwing 100 after the fact, there\u2019s surely some intrigue there. Seeing as Cincinnati doesn\u2019t have a left-hander in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/milb\/prospects\/reds\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">its top 30 prospects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that would justify this pick. Recent names to come from the Red Sox home state include <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/03\/yankees-top-starters-ranked-number-one-for-1-2-duos-in-the-major-leagues\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Yankees ace <\/a><\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schlica01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cam Schlittler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Chicago White Sox pitcher <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithsh02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shane Smith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who, while struggling this season, performed well last season. There\u2019s a development system in Mass that works well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Red Sox have four left-handers currently in the top 30 team prospects. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/benneja01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jake Bennett<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rivered01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eduardo Rivera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have already made their major league debuts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cCore Four\u201d that they have in the minors in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=eyanso000ant\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Eyanson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=wither000kys\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyson Witherspoon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=valera001jua\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juan Valera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=philli006mar\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcus Phillips<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are all right-handers, so the Red Sox don\u2019t quite have a top left-hander to develop. Rivera was pretty good <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/22\/eduardo-rivera-called-up-to-red-sox-what-to-know-about-this-move\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when called up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and he should be fun to watch. But it would be a nice hypothetical to imagine what the Sox could do with the Attleboro kid, if he so chooses to sign this year. He is a projected first-round pick, but as mentioned earlier, he could decide to go pitch in the SEC at Texas next year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The development system has flipped around as well since the hiring of general manager Craig Breslow. The minor leagues are stacked currently. Then there are young players in the majors, such as <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tollepa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payton Tolle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/earlyco01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connelly Early<\/span><\/a>, who<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continue to prove that the development works. So there\u2019s no doubt that they could help develop a guy like Bumila.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1200px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBJKeeD2q3\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3434px; aspect-ratio: 3434\/4292;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Last Word\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Bumila is a highly sought-after prospect in this year\u2019s draft, the fact that he could fall into the Red Sox\u2019s hands should be enticing to fans. When thinking of former Red Sox pitchers from Massachusetts that got drafted by them, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/delcama01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manny Delcarmen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes to mind. Hopefully, Bumila can become the next hometown kid to play for and become a star with the Red Sox.
