The Red Sox have not had the best luck with avoiding the injury bug this year. Whether it\u2019s <\/span>what happened <\/span><\/a>to <\/span>Sonny Gray<\/span><\/a>, or <\/span>Danny Coulombe<\/span><\/a>, they\u2019ve always had someone major on the injury list. As of now, they have multiple major contributors sharing time on the IL. Here\u2019s the updates on them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Red Sox Injury Updates<\/h2>\n

Trevor Story<\/b><\/h3>\n

Trevor Story<\/span><\/a> has had a troubling Red Sox tenure to say the least in terms of staying healthy. He\u2019s only had one season fully in his five years here where he played over 100 games. That was last year, when he had 25 home runs and 31 stolen bases. But the rest of his time here has been disappointing compared to what the Red Sox thought they were getting. His recent addition to the injured list just adds onto the reasons that his <\/span>six year, 140 million dollar contract<\/span><\/a> might turn out as a bad deal in the eyes of the fans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Story was placed on the IL on May 16th regarding a sports hernia issue, which he claims had been lingering since Spring Training. He had been looking towards the possibility of surgery when placed on the list, and would later opt for it, undergoing successful surgery on May 22nd. While an exact timetable for his injury isn\u2019t said, the estimated return is anywhere from six to ten weeks. Ten weeks would put his return at late July-early August.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Story had been struggling this season heavily, batting .206 with three homers and 19 RBIs. While he claims that he doesn\u2019t want to make excuses with this injury regarding his poor performance, it\u2019s very possible this could\u2019ve been a factor. Regardless, the Red Sox will be testing options out, such as using <\/span>Marcelo Mayer<\/span><\/a> at shortstop on Sunday. If the Red Sox can hang around long enough to keep in Wild Card contention, Story could possibly be a contributor in a playoff push.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Garrett Crochet\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n

Garrett Crochet<\/span><\/a> has been on the IL since April 29th, when <\/span>he got placed there<\/span><\/a> with a diagnosis of left shoulder inflammation. The left hander has had an inconsistent season to say the least, with a 3-3 record and a 6.30 ERA. This season also included the worst start of his career, in which he let up 10 earned runs in just 1 \u2154 innings against the Minnesota Twins. That was coming off a stellar start against the Milwaukee Brewers, in which he went into the seventh inning, only letting up two runs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The ace of the team had been <\/span>seen throwing a bullpen session<\/span><\/a> before Saturday\u2019s game against the Twins. The next step for him would be live batting practice. If things go well there, he could be back as soon as early June. The Red Sox would have quite the predicament when Crochet returns, as their pitching rotation currently has been one of the best in baseball. They\u2019ve managed a 2.75 ERA and holding batters to a .224 OBA. But with their ace returning, they have to make some arrangements. <\/span><\/p>\n

The assumption would be that <\/span>Brayan Bello<\/span><\/a> moves out of the rotation <\/span>due to his struggles.<\/span><\/a> Whether it\u2019s to the bullpen or somewhere else is unknown. But the way everyone else is pitching, it seems like the most logical option for Crochet\u2019s return.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Roman Anthony\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n

Roman Anthony<\/span><\/a> got sent to the IL on May 4th against the Detroit Tigers. He <\/span>hurt himself during an at-bat<\/span><\/a>, spraining a ligament in his finger. The rumors that he tore something are not true according to team CEO Sam Kennedy. That being said, Anthony hasn\u2019t swung a bat in nearly three weeks. According to Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald, he did play catch this weekend. When she talked to manager <\/span>Chad Tracy<\/span><\/a>, he said everything else was okay and they just need to wait on his hand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
