As a result, fellow righty <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kellyza01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Kelly<\/a> has been sent down to Worcester. The Red Sox have been no stranger to making roster moves within the bullpen this year, with the majority of pitcher call ups going into reliever roles. From <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderja02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack Anderson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/samanty01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler Samaniego<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, plenty of names have<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/18\/how-the-2026-red-sox-rookie-class-looks-so-far-ranked\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helped out over the course of the season so far<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But this recent call up has a different feel to it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Red Sox Call Up Veteran Pitcher Tayron Guerrero<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/athlonsports.com\/.image\/MjY6MDAwMDAwMDAxMzIzMTMw\/cincinnati-reds-pitcher-tayron-guerrero-50-delivers-a-pitch-in-the-sixth-inning-of-the-mlb-cactus-league-spring-training-game.jpg?profile=share16-9\" alt=\"Red Sox Promote Intriguing Veteran Reliever to Major Leagues - Athlon ...\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><b>Who Is Tayron Guerrero?\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guerrero is a long-time pitcher in professional baseball, having been around different teams\u2019 organizations since 2009. In 2009 he was signed as an amateur free agent by the San Diego Padres. He stuck around for a while and finally got his shot in the majors in May of 2016. Two months later, he was a part of the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cashnan01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Cashner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trade that got him sent to Miami.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the next few years, he would struggle, getting DFA\u2019ed by the Marlins and being stashed in the Chicago White Sox\u2019s system. He would go back and forth between overseas leagues and the MLB. He went to the NPB, then got a chance with the Cincinnati Reds, then the Mexican League. Eventually, he would end up with the Red Sox. The 35-year-old finally gets another shot at the major leagues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How Is Guerrero This Season?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although he would back out due to personal reasons, Guerrero was one of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/12\/five-under-the-radar-prospects-to-watch-in-fort-myers\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14 players selected to participate <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the World Baseball Classic this past March month for Colombia (<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anthoro01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roman Anthony<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was an injury replacement, not an initial selection).\u00a0 He would later show up in Worcester for the Red Sox. He took the role of what could be considered the closer in the minors, as he appeared in 15 games in relief, but finished half of them.\u00a0 In those games, he holds an ERA of 0.92 He\u2019s let up a total of two runs in just under 20 innings, as well as striking out 22 of the 75 batters he\u2019s faced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An interesting comparison to be made (at least this season) would be Puerto Rican pitcher <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rivered01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eduardo Rivera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/22\/eduardo-rivera-called-up-to-red-sox-what-to-know-about-this-move\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">got called up for a little bit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about a month ago. Although Rivera never pitched in Triple A prior to his call up, they\u2019re both around the same size, both have dominant fastballs, and both are strikeout pitchers. The only difference is Guerrero has far more experience (by about 13 years). Rivera\u2019s fallen back a tiny bit in ERA since going from Portland to Worcester, but when looking at their profiles, they\u2019re very similar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>One Positive and Negative<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One positive about Guerrero is his pitch combo. His fastball can hit 100, making him yet another hard thrower in the system. But his slider is also very good, topping out around the mid 80\u2019s or so. The one main issue with him however, is his lack of control. If he has it, his pitches are deadly. But if not, it\u2019s a little rough to watch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Zach Kelly Sent Down<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to make room for Guerrero, Kelly was the one who had to be sent down to Triple A. The right hander has let up almost a hit an inning (14 hits compared to 16 innings pitched), but he\u2019s also struck out almost a hitter an innings (also 14 to 16). He\u2019s not part of the big three relievers of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/slateju01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justin Slaten<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/whitlga01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garrett Whitlock<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chapmar01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aroldis Chapman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but he\u2019s been a decent reliever. It\u2019s just tough to figure out who to send down. So, he had to be the guy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Last Word<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Guerrero\u2019s experience and dominance this season in the minors, it should be interesting to see if he can bounce back and find a consistent place in this bullpen. While pitching is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/18\/the-issues-with-this-red-sox-offense-as-the-team-continues-to-struggle\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">least of the Red Sox\u2019s concerns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the depth in the organization certainly helps, whether it\u2019s due to injuries, trading for a bigger name, or finding someone to take over.
