Jones clearly has lights-out power; that much was clear with his <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/30\/spencer-jones-blazing-start-makes-case-yankees-call-up\/\" target=\"_self\">red-hot start at Triple-A<\/a> this season. On the downside, he also strikes out at an astronomically high rate. Before taking the field against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday night, Jones had 12 strikeouts through his first 24 at-bats, slashing .167\/.259\/.167 with just four singles. After a 1-for 3 performance on Thursday, the Yankees announced they optioned Jones back to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1200px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBMyV5q7iw\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5184px; aspect-ratio: 5184\/3456;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jones, who is arguably the most hyped Yankee prospect in recent memory (likely because of the constant comparisons to <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/judgeaa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Judge<\/a>), did not stay up in the Bronx for long. What we saw was just an opportunity for Jones to get his feet wet before there is a role ready for him to take over. According to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/spencer-jones-682987?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baseball Savant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Jones has an average exit velocity of 96.4 MPH, which is higher than the current qualified league leader, <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/woodja03.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Wood<\/a> (96.3 MPH). He also has a bat speed of 77.3 MPH, which would also be on top of the league leaderboard. It\u2019s safe to say that when he makes contact, good things happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like so many power hitters before him, Jones\u2019 Achilles heel is hitting for contact. It\u2019s not about struggling to get hits, but rather about how rarely he puts the ball in play. Those who defend Jones will certainly be quick to point out the fact that Judge struck out in half of his at-bats in his rookie year (across a much bigger sample size), and it\u2019s true that a bigger sample size is needed before a verdict is reached.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Spencer Jones&#8217; Struggles Limit His First Stint in Pinstripes<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Jones didn&#8217;t get too much time to start showing signs of growth. The Yankees have already dealt with a good amount of injuries, which is really the reason why Jones was in the Bronx rather than in the minors. With <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cabaljo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jos\u00e9 Caballero<\/a> expected to return from the IL on Friday (taking back over from the recently <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/12\/yankees-recall-volpe\/\" target=\"_self\">recalled Anthony Volpe<\/a>), as well as <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dominja01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jasson Dom\u00ednguez<\/a> and <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stantmi03.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Giancarlo Stanton<\/a> also on the mend, the clock was ticking on the young outfielder\u2019s first stint wearing the pinstripes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to note that Jones\u2019 stats haven\u2019t been skewed by bad luck. Statcast measures his expected batting average to be .156, and his expected slugging at just .236. He also whiffs on 41.7% of his swings. Again, while it\u2019s a bit too early in his career to be looking at these kinds of stats, it can\u2019t feel good for the Yankees to see one of their most prized prospects struggle so much right out of the gate.
