In the month of May (up until the 19th), Boston pitchers have achieved a 2.63 ERA and held opponents to a .216 batting average. Team ace <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crochga01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garrett Crochet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/29\/red-sox-roster-moves-garrett-crochet-injury-nate-eaton-call-up\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been inactive all month with left shoulder issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but there\u2019s been other pitchers carrying the team, namely <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grayso01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonny Gray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tollepa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payton Tolle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who\u2019ve both had multiple wins this month. There has been, however, one glaring issue with this rotation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Should The Red Sox Do with Brayan Bello?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a2.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2024%2F0307%2Fr1301207_1296x729_16-9.jpg\" alt=\"In return from IL, Brayan Bello improves to 4-1 for Red Sox - ESPN\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bellobr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brayan Bello<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the number five pitcher in the rotation, recently started in Atlanta against the Braves on Sunday. After letting up a three run homer to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rileyau01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Riley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the first inning, it just went downhill from there. Bello would go five innings, giving up seven earned runs on eight hits and three walks. The Red Sox were too far behind that they would end up losing 8-1.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, benefit of the doubt here, Atlanta was the best team in baseball at the time (currently, they\u2019re tied with the Tampa Bay Rays). But this one start has been just a continuation of a disappointing season with Bello this season. Bello threw 30 pitches in the first inning on Sunday. He had 58 by the end of the second. These are concerning numbers from someone who\u2019s considered a veteran on this team in terms of MLB experience. Throw in his 7.16 ERA in the mix and it\u2019s a disastrous look on him. With Crochet coming back soon, there\u2019s really only two options for him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Move To Bullpen\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now this may sound weird, but it\u2019s worth a try. In Bello\u2019s 109 career appearances, he has only come out of the bullpen in five of them. Two in 2022, one in 2025, and two games where an opener was used this season. Here are the stat lines:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7\/29\/2022: 4.1 innings (3-7), four hits, two earned runs, 3\/1 BB\/K, L<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8\/3\/2022: 0.2 innings (fourth inning) two hits, no ER, 0\/2 BB\/K, ND<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7\/1\/2025: Five Innings (4-8), one hit, two ER, 1\/3 BB\/K, W<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5\/5\/2026: Seven Innings (2-8), four hits, one ER, 1\/7 BB\/K, W<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5\/12\/2026: 6.1 innings (2-8), four hits, one ER, 1\/5 BB\/K, ND<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is limited, Bello\u2019s time in a bullpen role (or with an opener) has been successful. In fact, this season has proven that he&#8217;s better off not pitching at the start. In the seven appearances where he started in the first inning, he threw an average of 23 pitches in the first per start. It seems strange for a starter, but it\u2019s happened several times before in baseball.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Possible Trade\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is always the possible trade route as well. While the Red Sox may want to keep Bello long term, given the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/03\/07\/red-sox-sign-bello-extension\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">team-friendly contract<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Gray\u2019s contract coming to a close this year, there\u2019s other needs for this team to be addressed. In Bello\u2019s case, he may only be making a little over six million this year, but <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/74775\/brayan-bello\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">come 2028<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he\u2019ll be making upwards of 16 million with one year remaining plus a club option. He\u2019s also just turned 27, so it\u2019s still possible that a new system could turn him around. If the lineup <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/18\/the-issues-with-this-red-sox-offense-as-the-team-continues-to-struggle\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continues to struggle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it might be worth looking into a Bello trade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A popular one thrown in the mix is for Washington Nationals infielder <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/abramcj01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CJ Abrams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Red Sox were<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/03\/a-possible-trade-piece-could-fix-bostons-second-base-issue\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> linked to him this offseason<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a potential destination in a trade, but no such deal was made then. Should <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/storytr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trevor Story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s sports hernia injury <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/trevor-story-to-injured-list\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">require surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Abrams could be a name to look at for a potential trade (<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/red-sox-mock-trade-swaps-210725694.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tied in with some prospects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of course).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Last Word<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s always possible that a minor league stint is possible short term. But with a veteran of his caliber, who\u2019s also not injured, it\u2019s less likely that this happens. The chances aren\u2019t zero, but realistically, a bullpen role or new team could suit him. Bello\u2019s next projected start is May 23rd against the Minnesota Twins.
