Sure, the pitching has massively improved, with highlights from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/17\/red-sox-aces-homegrown\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">homegrown talents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tollepa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Payton Tolle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/earlyco01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connelly Early<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact, in the month of May, the Red Sox pitching staff has had an ERA of 2.73, holding batters to a .217 OBA, and struck out 124 batters. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s extremely impressive, seeing that as of May 18th, they\u2019ve only had one scheduled day off this month (May 9th against Tampa Bay was postponed). They\u2019re also doing this without one of the best pitchers in baseball in Garrett Crochet, who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/29\/red-sox-roster-moves-garrett-crochet-injury-nate-eaton-call-up\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">went down at the end of April<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with left shoulder problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So the pitching surely hasn\u2019t been the problem. Not consistently at least. And the defense isn\u2019t either. The Red Sox have the highest DRS in the league at +40. The highlights there are right fielder <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/abreuwi02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilyer Abreu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (11) and third baseman <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/durbica01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caleb Durbin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (seven). Both of them rank in the<a  href=\"https:\/\/archive.fieldingbible.com\/DRSLeaderboard\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> top 10 of DRS<\/a> around the league. So that puts the main focus on the offense.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Offense\u2019s Struggles Continue Post-Cora\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOByhmT3ucZ\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4706px; aspect-ratio: 4706\/2951;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/28\/alex-cora-firing-aftermath-what-might-have-happened-red-sox-manager\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">firing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/28\/alex-cora-firing-aftermath-what-might-have-happened-red-sox-manager\/\" target=\"_self\"> former manager Alex Cora<\/a> as well as most of his staff, the Red Sox continue to struggle. As mentioned. The pitching and defense has been phenomenal. However, in the month of May, they\u2019re 7-8. In 15 games, they\u2019ve scored 44 runs. In the month of April (26 games), they had 110. Now it\u2019s a bigger sample size in April, but there\u2019s serious doubts they\u2019ll catch up to that pace. In fact, Pat Brown of WEEI put out a stat saying if they scored at a league average rate, they\u2019d be one of the best in baseball.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If the Sox were a league average offense (4.5 runs per game) their record would be&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>32-14<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Pat Brown (@PatBrown954) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatBrown954\/status\/2056130617390113212?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">May 17, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s legit. Of the 46 games played, opponents have scored 5+ in only 14 of those games. In addition, Eight of their 27 losses have come with the following criteria:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opponent score four runs or less\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red Sox lose by two or fewer runs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This slump that they\u2019ve been in all season offensively gets worse the more that numbers pop up. It\u2019s surely an issue, but it doesn\u2019t look like that\u2019s going to get fixed anytime. Instead there\u2019s a couple bigger issues. The obvious one is batting with runners in scoring position, then there\u2019s who gets chosen to step up to the plate first.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking at the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/splits\/_\/name\/bos\/boston-red-sox\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">splits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the Red Sox this season, leadoff batters have a slash line of .197\/.288\/.298. The Red Sox have used three players at the leadoff spot this season. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranja01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jarren Duran<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hit .168 with a .218 OBP. For one of the fastest guys in the league, one would hope at the very least that he could get on base. But he\u2019s struggling from that spot this year. In addition, when put lower in the batting order (as low as sixth), he\u2019s batting .308.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anthoro01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roman Anthony<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t a massive improvement batting wise at .214. But he\u2019s good at drawing walks and getting on base, with a OBP of .347. He\u2019s sitting on the IL right now, but when he returns, having him bat leadoff should be a consideration, especially with Duran\u2019s better hitting late in the order. For what it\u2019s worth, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rafaece01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ceddanne Rafaela<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has also been tested at the leadoff spot, but with nine at bats there, it\u2019s nothing notable to see.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Runners In Scoring Position\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9\" image-id=\"fwuQHBn036au\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3900px; aspect-ratio: 3900\/2700;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of May 18th, the Red Sox have had a total of 1,535 at bats over the course of the season. Of those, 361 were with runners in scoring position. The Red Sox have gotten 85 hits from those situations, or a batting average of .227, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/tools\/split_stats_lg.cgi?full=1&amp;params=bases%7CRISP%7CML%7C2026%7Cbat%7CAB%7C\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second worst in baseball<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> behind the Los Angeles Angels. Rafaela and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/contrwi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willson Contreras<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the only two on the team (qualified) with a batting average over .250 <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.fangraphs.com\/leaders\/splits-leaderboards?splitArr=59,196&amp;splitArrPitch=&amp;autoPt=false&amp;splitTeams=false&amp;statType=player&amp;statgroup=1&amp;startDate=2026-03-01&amp;endDate=2026-11-01&amp;players=&amp;filter=&amp;groupBy=season&amp;wxTemperature=&amp;wxPressure=&amp;wxAirDensity=&amp;wxElevation=&amp;wxWindSpeed=&amp;position=B&amp;sort=22,1&amp;pg=0\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in those situations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with Rafaela nearly batting .300. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony and newcomer <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gaspemi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mickey Gasper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also hit well. Everyone else ranges from .243 (Abreu) to .095 (<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/narvaca01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carlos Narvaez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). In the entirety of MLB, 66 <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.fangraphs.com\/leaders\/splits-leaderboards?splitArr=59&amp;splitArrPitch=&amp;autoPt=false&amp;splitTeams=false&amp;statType=player&amp;statgroup=1&amp;startDate=2026-03-01&amp;endDate=2026-11-01&amp;players=&amp;filter=PA%7Cgt%7C30&amp;groupBy=season&amp;wxTemperature=&amp;wxPressure=&amp;wxAirDensity=&amp;wxElevation=&amp;wxWindSpeed=&amp;position=B&amp;sort=22,1&amp;pg=0\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qualified hitters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are hitting .300 or better. The lack of run support for the pitchers is why the Red Sox are struggling. It\u2019s mostly a collective issue, not one single batter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Last Word\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Red Sox offense has been a frustrating disappointment. Because this team is young, but with the caliber of players missed out on this offseason, as well as the expectations of these guys given performances in previous seasons, the offense should be much better than it currently is.
