The New York Yankees and their front office will be gearing up to make their selections, providing more teeth to their farm system.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MLB draft is always an exciting time, as many teams get a preliminary view of their potential future franchise players. We all know that draft selections are both a gamble and a currency within the league.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Yankees are currently ranked 20th of 30 Major League franchises by Bleacher Report. Why so low? It\u2019s because their key farm system pieces make up <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/12\/yankees-recall-volpe\/\" target=\"_self\">a lot of their 25-man roster<\/a> and produce wins.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dominja01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jasson Dom\u00ednguez<\/a> was recently called up before getting injured in a defensive play. He was a huge prospect in the top 30 rankings and provided great value to the Major League club. <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ricebe01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Rice<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/08\/how-yankees-call-up-spencer-jones-helps-team\/\" target=\"_self\">Spencer Jones,<\/a> <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/volpean01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony Volpe<\/a>, and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rodriel03.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elmer Rodr\u00edguez<\/a> represent the other prospects playing huge roles in the show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needless to say, the club needs to re-stock the prospect shelves, bringing in some fresh grassroots talent. Where do they sit in this year\u2019s selection order?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Yankees 2026 MLB Draft Selection Position\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This season, the Yankees will pick in the 35th slot in the competitive balance round \u201cA\u201d. Before the Yankees are the Pittsburgh Pirates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why did the Yankees get a competitive balance round pick? They originally had pick number 25, but took a 10-pick penalty due to them exceeding the second surcharge threshold of the competitive balance tax.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The club, unfortunately, took a big step back from the top 20 highlighted prospects; however, the first-round options are endless.\u00a0 In 2025, the club was also picked in the competitive balance round, in the 39th slot. This did not stop them from getting their top draft guy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Yankees took Dax Kilby with their first pick. In addition, names like Kaeden Kent and Core Jackson were also great examples of high-ceiling selections early in the prospect buffet.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking at the current climate of the club\u2019s farm system, there are quite a few areas of focus. There is definitely room to improve these positions and replenish what\u2019s missing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Areas of Focus for the 2026 Yankees Draft\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Off the top of any knowledgeable baseball mind, we know that two main areas of focus need to be on the mound and the middle infield. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/09\/yankees-bullpen-still-the-teams-biggest-problem-in-2026\/\" target=\"_self\">On the bump,<\/a> the Yankees are strong from top to bottom, from the Major Leagues to the Minor Leagues.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yankees farm system pitching is now constantly aiding the big club, with more and more promotions. There are still a few names of interest to get to the big leagues, but they\u2019ll vacate the Minor Leagues very soon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/milb\/prospects\/yankees\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">20 of the Yankees&#8217; top 30 prospects<\/a> are, in fact, pitchers. Keep in mind, this pool of players is also currency in the trade market. Should the Yankees be buyers at the deadline, a few of these arms could be moved.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drafting another high-leverage pitcher would be beneficial for the Yankees, as they try to generate the next <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schlica01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Schlittler<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1200px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOB9juHHQJD\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5506px; aspect-ratio: 5506\/3672;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second up on that list is shortstop. Despite having five ranked shortstops on that top 30 list, the club should consider a high-leverage shortstop in this draft.\u00a0Volpe <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/11\/should-this-yankees-shortstop-get-another-chance-in-the-big-leagues\/\" target=\"_self\">looks to be in his final season as a Yankee<\/a>, and the next person up is Kilby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Kilby are Jackson and Kent. It would be ideal to have one more in line to groom into their next <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jeterde01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derek Jeter<\/a>-type guy up the middle.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, the Yankees do not have a single catcher ranked on that top prospect list. A high-leverage catcher with a good bat would be another strong draft consideration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These three areas are key interests for the Yankees in the upcoming draft.
