One of the biggest questions is who the Boston Red Sox will take. Last year, they did make the playoffs, so they\u2019re not exactly in a position for a high pick. Boston owns the 20th pick in the first round going into this draft. But there are still some pretty solid players being projected around that range. Here\u2019s what they need, and five players, according to mock drafts, who the Sox could select.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Team Needs<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Corner Infielders\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Red Sox have a desperate need for corner infield depth. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/durbica01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caleb Durbin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looks like the mainstay at third base for now. But <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kineris01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isiah Kiner-Falefa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is only on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/05\/isiah-kiner-falefa-to-boston-how-he-fits-with-the-team\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one-year contract<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/casastr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triston Casas&#8217;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injury timeline is unclear for the foreseeable future. And big bat <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/contrwi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willson Contreras<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might be one of the names thrown out at the trade deadline if things get bad. In the Red Sox&#8217;s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/04\/red-sox-prospects-mlbs-top-30\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> top 30 Prospects list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are not really any corner infielders, let alone first basemen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1200px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9\" image-id=\"fwuQz8CpXakg\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2700px; aspect-ratio: 2700\/3900;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of third, it could be possible for <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=romero000mik\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mikey Romero<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to shift from shortstop to third base due to the jam created not only in the majors, but with <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=arias-008fra\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Franklin Arias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well. But catcher <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=rodrig009ger\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gerardo Rodriguez <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the only guy on the list who\u2019s listed as a possible first baseman. Certainly an area to keep an eye on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Left Handed Pitching<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given how lefty-dominant the current rotation is, this may seem crazy. But in the top 30, there are over twice as many right-handers as left-handers at the top of the minors. More pitching is always good, regardless of what hand someone throws from. But with a lack of consistency in the bullpen (aside from <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/samanty01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler Samaniego<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/08\/29\/former-yankees-closer-aroldis-chapman-turns-career-around-red-sox\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dominant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but aging <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chapmar01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aroldis Chapman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), it might be good to search the left-hander department in this year\u2019s draft.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Power Hitter\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alright, a little cheating here. Technically, a power hitter isn\u2019t a position on the field (although a DH could be seen as one). But this team is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struggling <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in that department. And if they could steal a big home run hitter in the first round, it might be good for their future after striking out on all the free agents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>With the 20th Pick, the Boston Red Sox Select\u2026<\/h2>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/mlb-pipeline-2026-mock-draft-may-7\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>MLB.com<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=bell--007tyl\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Tyler Bell<\/b><\/a><b>, SS, Kentucky\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although drafting a shortstop would be questionable, with Arias and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=soto--000dor\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dorian Soto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the top ten of Red Sox prospects, one could switch positions or be traded for a big piece. The switch-hitter possesses 20-homer power and has good bat speed. Before the 2026 season, he tore the labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, but that wasn\u2019t a huge setback as he returned a month into the season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he will require surgery once the Wildcats&#8217; season has ended. His best attribute is his arm. He\u2019s said to have a strong enough arm that, combined with his athleticism, can make throws from anywhere. Also, because of his athletic ability, this opens him up to the possibility of a utility role, just like <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/monasan01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andruw Monasterio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Boston this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/25425794-2026-mlb-mock-draft-50-predictions-entire-1st-round\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Bleacher Report<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=becker000eri\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Eric Becker<\/b><\/a><b>, SS, Virginia\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A teammate of Bell\u2019s last summer in the Cape Cod League, Becker is also a super utility guy labelled as a shortstop. Unlike Bell, his arm is seen as just average by scouts. However, the bat he has is what makes him stand out. In his three years at Virginia, he has a career batting average of .349 and has a 60 hit grade in the<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/milb\/prospects\/draft\/eric-becker-806027\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scouting department<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While he may not be the biggest home run hitter, he can certainly get extra-base hits. With 13 doubles this season and 21 last season, in a park like Fenway, he should have no problem getting on base in a couple of years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/stories\/2026-mlb-mock-draft-3-0-first-round-picks-for-every-team-with-2-months-to-go\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Baseball America<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/milb\/prospects\/draft\/jared-grindlinger-828796\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jared Grindlinger<\/b><\/a><b>, LHP\/OF, Huntington Beach (CA) HS*<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*= Paywall Included<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the youngest players going into this year\u2019s draft, Jared Grindlinger, is seen as a legitimate two-way player. At 49th overall, he is seen as the best two-way man on MLB&#8217;s draft page. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While his bat needs a bit of development, given his age, the University of Tennessee commit\u2019s arm is one to look out for. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The left-hander has a fastball that sits around 90-93 MPH, getting as high as 96. He\u2019s also got a good changeup, as well as two different types of sliders. His pitch mix is good for someone his age, and he can certainly improve. With the Red Sox\u2019s connection to California prospects the past few years, Grindlinger seems like one of the more likely candidates who should be around at 20.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Jared Grindlinger (\u201826) turned in a stellar complete game performance and one of his best outings to date. The <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Vol_Baseball?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@Vol_Baseball<\/a> commit &amp; <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MLBDraft?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#MLBDraft<\/a> prospect is surging like a 1st-rounder. Allowed 5H 0BB &amp; struck out 7 on 90 pitches with a 72% strike rate. So he may not be around. The rawness of him could see him slip a bit, though. At 6\u20195\u201d, he\u2019s big enough to get placed at third base. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite an above-average arm, there are concerns that he might not stay at third forever. From a hitting standpoint, he\u2019s proven to hit well against good competition. However, home runs are not his strong suit. He has to get stronger if he wants to get the ball in the air. Given his frame, it could be possible that a conversation could be had to move him to first. His ability to hit any pitcher should provide value as an everyday player on a team. The negatives surrounding him are his fielding. He\u2019s said to have below-average athleticism, so playing the hot corner might not be the best scenario. There\u2019s certainly intrigue in a young two-way player that can be developed. Especially with his pitching ability. However, Reese seems like the go-to pick here. A guy with his type of power and who can hit anywhere in the ballpark would draw almost any team\u2019s attention. Should Boston move on from Casas, depending on what Contreras\u2019s future with the team is, Reese could surely fit in at first base. Durbin\u2019s too valuable on the defensive side, so the Red Sox should look at Reese first.
