The 25-year-old shortstop was optioned to the minor leagues after being activated from the injured list. Volpe underwent shoulder surgery in the offseason. His injury created an opportunity for Jose Caballero to play, and the young infielder performed well. The Yankees had a decision to make as to what to do when Volpe was activated. The team chose to option him<\/a> and continue to give the opportunity to Caballero.<\/p>\n

Just as Volpe’s injury created playing time for Cabellero, an injury to Cabellero is creating an opportunity for Volpe. Cabellero is hitting .259 with home runs, providing a spark in the Yankees’ lineup.<\/p>\n
