Shildt cited major issues with the job having taken a toll on his mental and physical health. That, along with reports of turmoil between Shildt and the rest of the coaching staff, seemed to suggest that there was more going on behind the scenes.

With that, the Padres’ skipper, who had guided them to consecutive 90-plus win seasons, was gone. Thus came immediate questions from the Friar Faithful about who would be chosen to lead the San Diego roster. Three names came forward as finalists: pitching coach Ruben Niebla, future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols (who managed the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic), and former Padres catcher Nick Hundley.

However, none of those three would be chosen. The Padres announced on November 6 that former reliever and then-special assistant Craig Stammen had been hired to a three-year contract to manage the Friars. It was a surprise to San Diego fans, who had been expecting one of the aforementioned names to be selected. Where did Stammen come from?

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBsAEW2BHt" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3844px; aspect-ratio: 3844/2563;" ></smartframe-embed>

Craig Stammen’s MLB Career: A Tale of Durability

In case you missed it, Craig Stammen pitched in relief for the Padres from 2017 until his retirement in 2022. Before that, he pitched for the Washington Nationals for seven years. His tenure as a major-leaguer was solid, with some years of elite relief pitching sprinkled into his career. But his time with the Padres was his best.

From 2017 to 2021, Stammen pitched to a 3.49 ERA (353 2/3 IP). His time with the club ended with his retirement from MLB after the 2022 season. Immediately after his retirement, he was hired by Padres General Manager A.J. Preller to be a special assistant in the front office. That role is one that has traditionally been an “as involved as you want to be” position. But Stammen has been cited as being incredibly involved with the club. Preller consistently cited him as a level-headed leader whose energy inspires people to follow and listen to him. That recommendation was one of the major reasons that Stammen was hired to manage the Friars.

“They love his communication skills, they love his familiarity with the organization.”@jonmorosi and Harold react to the Padres’ announcement of Craig Stammen as their new manager. pic.twitter.com/fVXm73rANA

— MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) November 6, 2025

A Bad Start Causes Early Concerns

The Padres got off to a rough start to the year, dropping four of their first six and struggling to score with RISP. Amidst that was a very poor offense that couldn’t score more than three runs in any of those games except one. The Friar Faithful were seeing red, and there were plenty of calls for Stammen and hitting coach Steven Souza Jr. to be fired.

But then … it happened. The Friars started winning, and they kept winning. After that initial homestand, the Padres won 15 of their next 20 games, rocketing them to second in the NL West. Their early offensive concerns were quieted by the surge, and Stammen was lauded for a number of reasons, but there have still been concerns elsewhere on the team.

Bench Plays and Rest Days

San Diego has seen an abundance of production from its bench players. Arguably one of the best benches in baseball, made up of Miguel Andujar, Nick Castellanos, Ty France, and Bryce Johnson, the Friars have gotten some great production from their second-stringers.

To be specific, Andujar and France have been incredible. The former has helped spark the Padres’ offense and is fresh off an eight-game hitting streak that brought his batting average to .296 entering play on Saturday. The latter knocked in the Padres’ first run of Saturday’s game with a home run off of St. Louis Cardinals starter Dustin May.

That ability to mix and match the lineup with the bench has allowed Stammen to continue practicing a constant rotation of rest days for his starters. That allows the starting nine to be fresh each time they take the field, giving plenty of opportunity for others to contribute.

Usage of the Relief Corps

Almost every club complains about the way that their skipper manages their bullpen, but Stammen was uncharacteristically bad to begin the year. But it wasn’t because he took his pitchers out early. He seemed to put too much faith in them. That led to the Padres losing a few games early in the year because a reliever was left in for an inning (or even a batter) too long.

Stammen has since figured it out, more or less. But, at the time, it was odd for a former reliever to struggle with how to deploy his ‘pen. His strategy always seemed to be just off, making games more interesting than the Friars would like. That caused the bullpen to falter a bit in its elite, all-around status despite the presence of high-leverage pitchers like Jason Adam and Mason Miller.

Moving Forward, A Steady Hand

The Friars are currently on track for their third consecutive 90-plus win season. If they can accomplish that, it would be the first time in franchise history. With that in mind, it’s hard to criticize Stammen all that much despite the recent difficulties of the Friars’ offense. He, more than just about anyone else, has been a manager who practices what he preaches. Stammen is also willing to admit that he is constantly learning on the job, as it is his first season in the manager’s chair for any MLB team. If Stammen can guide the Friars to the playoffs, it would be a major win for San Diego.

That being said, his sights are much higher. Stammen truly believes that this is a ball club that can win it all when the lights are brightest. If he can accomplish that, he’ll cement himself as the only Padres manager ever to hoist the Commissioner’s Trophy. But whether or not that comes to fruition won’t be seen until the season has finished playing out.

Main Photo Credit: David Frerker-Imagn Images

Immediately after the conclusion of the 2025 season, the San Diego Padres were rocked by the news that manager Mike Shildt would be leaving the team in the middle of his contract.
