While Yordan Alvarez has taken over baseball as arguably the best hitter in the game right now, there’s obviously more to the Astros offensive takeover.

That would be first baseman Christian Walker‘s hot start to the 2026 season. Through the first 36 games, Walker has posted a .308 average, .562 slugging, and .947 OPS. He’s hit eight home runs and has 26 RBIs as well as 40 hits.

These are all career highs for him at the moment. He’s second on the team to MVP candidate Alvarez in most of the offensive stats.

Strikeouts, walks, and performing at home. Those are the three reasons for Christian Walker’s hot start and why he has bounced back in a big way.

More on the Reasons for Christian Walker’s Hot Start

Walker’s strikeout numbers are considerably lower than last season, and he is one of the lowest among all first basemen. Just 27 K’s in 130 plate appearances. That’s been a huge reason for his improvement offensively. Walker had a career high of 177 strikeouts in 2025 and is on pace to bring that down significantly. The swings aren’t wild anymore, and he’s connecting more often.

Walker is being more patient at the plate and not swinging at everything. His at-bats are longer and smarter. Walker drew just 40 walks total last season in 154 games. He already has 15 BB through 36 games this year. This is a mixture of Walker getting out of last year’s slump and clearly having a different approach at the plate. He’s gone back to being one of the better first basemen in baseball.

The home and road splits were drastic last season. Walker was solid on the road in 2025, but just barely a .200 hitter at home. That’s completely changed. He’s still been better on the road, but just slightly. In 19 games at Daikin Park, Walker is hitting for a .284 average and .907 OPS.
