However, there must have been some thoughts in the back of Astros fans\u2019 minds if that meant yet another long-term injury blow.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It ended up being the worst-case scenario possible. This wasn\u2019t just a long-term injury where there\u2019s a chance of coming back. Correa is <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/astros\/news\/carlos-correa-out-for-season-with-ankle-injury\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">out for the season<\/a> with a torn left ankle tendon, in a disastrous development for the Astros.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBPX5LrsD0\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4651px; aspect-ratio: 4651\/3721;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h2>Carlos Correa Injury Deals Astros a Massive Setback<\/h2>\n<p>This came out of nowhere, but just continues the theme of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/22\/how-astros-can-overcome-overwhelming-injury-issues\/\" target=\"_self\">overwhelming injury issues<\/a> for the Astros&#8217; season so far. It&#8217;s been one injury after another. Just when the Astros had their best win of the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team took another step back. Correa, a true leader and vital member of the lineup, will be mightily missed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>He will require season-ending surgery after injuring the ankle while taking swings during batting practice in the cage before Tuesday\u2019s game.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Correa Gives More Details<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cI was hitting in the cage, a normal day, feeling great. Went through my routine and took a swing and just felt a pop. It snapped on me, and I fell to the ground and couldn\u2019t put weight on it,\u201d Correa said. \u201cIt was a normal swing. I felt a lot of pop. I heard it and felt it. Right away, I knew something was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was clearly disappointed and down in the media availability on Wednesday morning. This isn\u2019t something new for Correa, who has dealt with his fair share of injuries over his 12-year career. Correa hit three home runs and had 16 RBI, along with 34 hits in 32 games. The 31-year-old was constantly rotating between shortstop and third base this season for the Astros due to <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/penaje02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-06_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeremy Pe\u00f1a<\/a>\u2019s injury.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>Correa <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/07\/31\/carlos-correa-heads-back-astros-surprise-deadline-trade\/\" target=\"_self\">headed back to the Astros<\/a> last season from the Minnesota Twins in the biggest move of the trade deadline for the Astros. The 2017 World Series champion spent the first seven seasons in Houston as the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2012 before he signed a massive deal with the Twins in the 2021 offseason.<\/p>\n<h3>Astros Injury Issues Keep on Going<\/h3>\n<p>Correa is a fan favorite and delivered a number of incredible plays, especially during the team\u2019s postseason runs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> \u00a0<\/span>The Astros have already struggled this season, with a 15-22 record at the time of the Carlos Correa injury. This is now the fifth player in the Astros starting lineup who is out due to injury. Correa joins Pe\u00f1a, <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=meyerja02,meyers003jak&amp;search=Jake+Meyers&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-06_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Meyers<\/a>, <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/diazya02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-06_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yainer Diaz<\/a>, and <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/loperjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-06_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joey Loperfido<\/a> <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/astros-injuries-and-roster-moves\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on the injured list<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Astros have a total of 14 players on the IL at this point, just over a month into the season. <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paredis01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-06_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaac Paredes<\/a> ultimately not being traded during the offseason has now turned into a great move for the team. He\u2019ll now officially be an everyday player for the team at third base.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Positive News for the Astros<\/h3>\n<p>While the Carlos Correa injury is obviously a big blow to the Astros\u2019 chances of getting out of this hole, it\u2019s not as brutal as it could be. Having Paredes softens that blow.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The good news for the Astros is that Pe\u00f1a is expected to return in the middle of the month from his rehab of a Grade 1 hamstring strain. The former Gold Glove winner will slide right into his starting shortstop position. An infield of Walker, Altuve, Pe\u00f1a, and Paredes is quite strong and was the starting group in 2025 before injuries set in.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Besides that, the starting center fielder in Meyers and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/24\/astros-reacquired-fan-favorite-outfielder-who-could-play-key-role\/\" target=\"_self\">left fielder in Loperfido<\/a> will also be back this month. Correa will still be available as the leader of the clubhouse and in the dugout, even if he doesn\u2019t have a presence on the field.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/30\/astros-rotation-surprise-leader\/\" target=\"_self\">Astros rotation<\/a> and bullpen have already been under severe strain, it\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/03\/how-astros-offense-exploded-start-2026-season\/\" target=\"_self\">best offense in the American League<\/a> that will need to somehow survive the first few weeks of May. The reinforcements are on their way.
