Duran was placed on the injured list on April 18 amongst a flurry of roster moves because of a left oblique strain. This season Duran has a 1-1 record with a 1.35 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP with five saves in seven outings. To add to that Duran has a 8.00 K/BB rate. Opposing batters have a .208 average and a .313 BABIP against Duran this year. In addition to that Duran has a 60% left-on-base percentage this season. Duran since joining the team at the trade deadline last season has stabilized the closer role.

Brad Keller has been handling the closing duties while Duran has been out. Keller has a 4.50 ERA and a 0.67 WHIP in six appearances since Duran went on the injured list. Entering play on May 4 the Phillies bullpen has a 3.90 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP in that span. Furthermore the Phillies bullpen has a 1.96 K/BB rate and a 0.78 HR/9 allowed rate since Duran went on the injured list. Opposing batters recorded a .279 average and a .347 BABIP against Phillies relief pitchers between April 18 and May 3. The Phillies bullpen has a 4.08 FIP in that span. Keller returning to a setup role should lead to improvement after his poor start.

Phillies Getting Healthy

Other Recent Returns From The Injured List And Who Is Still On It

Duran is not the sole Phillies player to be returning from injury in recent games. J.T. Realmuto also returned from the 10-day injured list on May 2. The Phillies getting healthy across the board will help the team win games. With interim manager Don Mattingly at the helm the Phillies have a 5-1 record through the first six games of his tenure. The returns of Realmuto and Duran as well as the schedule can help the team maintain this momentum. After Duran is officially activated Kyle Backhus and Zach Pop will be the Phillies on the injured list. Jonathan Bowlan also came back from injury recently.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9" image-id="fwuQ8CrEwIo2" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2602px; aspect-ratio: 2602/2048;" ></smartframe-embed>

Relief Pitcher Stepping Up While Team Has Been Without Closer

Chase Shugart has elevated his game while Duran has been out. Shugart has a 2-0 record with a 0.84 ERA and a 1.o3 WHIP in 10 major league outings this season. To add to that Shugart has a 4.50 K/BB rate. Opposing batters have a .237 average along with a .286 BABIP against Shugart through May 3. Entering play on May 4, the lone run Shugart allowed this season came on a home run. Shugart has a 100% left-on-base percentage this season. With a corresponding move pending when Duran is officially activated, Shugart should not be the odd one out. Shugart can be optioned to the minor leagues when others cannot.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9" image-id="fwuQxsWefyt0" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3324px; aspect-ratio: 3324/2182;" ></smartframe-embed>

Roster Decisions That Have Been Created

When Realmuto was activated the Phillies decided to do a bench shakeup and designated Dylan Moore for assignment. This means both Rafael Marchán and Garrett Stubbs remain on the Phillies 26-man roster. They are carrying three catchers with Stubbs serving in a super utility role. Furthermore Trevor Richards getting promoted from Triple-A on April 30 is also likely a short term move. Richards will likely be designated for assignment to make room for Duran. This season Richards has a 2.08 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP in two major league outings entering play on May 4.
