Their 12-19 record in April is a franchise-worst start for the first month. There were <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some slight concerns early on<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after the first couple of series. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/02\/red-sox-start-off-1-5-is-it-time-to-hit-the-panic-button\/\" target=\"_self\">panic button<\/a> is in full force now that the Red Sox have almost played 20% of their games. So that begs the question: what are the issues with this team, and how can they be fixed?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Three Biggest Red Sox Issues a Month into the 2026 Season<\/h2>\n<h2><b>Issue #1: Lack of Consistent Starting Pitching<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this season, about the third time through, Boston&#8217;s five-man rotation had a great turn. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/red-sox-rotation-steps-up-after-shaky-start-to-the-season\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During that span<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they had an ERA of 1.52 and four quality starts (six innings or more) out of the five outings. They let up five runs across those games, and also had extra help from the offense, going 4-1 in that turn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But since then, it\u2019s gone downhill. Granted, there were some<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> key injuries that required <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/29\/red-sox-roster-moves-garrett-crochet-injury-nate-eaton-call-up\/\" target=\"_self\">roster moves<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And if fans wanted to use that, it\u2019s a fair excuse. But that can only last so long. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/earlyco01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connelly Early<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the best starter currently. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/suarera01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ranger Su\u00e1rez<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is turning it around. But the rest of the rotation is iffy, particularly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bellobr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brayan Bello<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1200px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBaBSzoiNf\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 7624px; aspect-ratio: 7624\/5083;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Bello has been a consistent piece in the rotation in past years, even being listed as a trade asset, 2026 has not been his year. He currently sits at a record of 1-4 with an ERA of 9.12, allowing more earned runs than strikeouts. Other than a good start versus the St. Louis Cardinals, where he went six innings, he\u2019s failed to pitch past four in every other start.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Solution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tollepa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Payton Tolle<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best-case scenario for Bello is probably to take a stint in Triple-A Worcester when the rotation is back to normal in mid-May. With Bello needing a bit of a bounce back, Tolle might be the best option. In his season debut against the New York Yankees, he threw seven innings of one-run ball. His next outing against the Toronto Blue Jays was less exciting, but Toronto\u2019s a team that was one game away from being World Series champions. He\u2019s got 16 strikeouts in just under 11 innings this season. In terms of guys available outside the Opening Day rotation, Tolle seems like the best option.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Issue #2: Bullpen<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bullpen also has its fair share of issues as well, particularly the middle to long relief guys. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=watson002rya,watsory01&amp;search=Ryan+Watson&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Watson<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/couloda01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danny Coulombe<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/weissgr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greg Weissert<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all have ERAs over five. Weissert and Coulombe both contributed to letting up the runs that contributed to the 4-2 loss to the Yankees a week and a half ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Solution: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any Combination of the Young Guys\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/18\/how-the-2026-red-sox-rookie-class-looks-so-far-ranked\/\" target=\"_self\">Red Sox rookies<\/a> to debut in the majors this season have been pitchers who made appearances out of the bullpen. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/samanty01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Samaniego<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=rivered01,rivera003edu&amp;search=Eduardo+Rivera&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eduardo Rivera<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are two of the three pitchers on the team who haven\u2019t allowed a run. Granted, they\u2019ve pitched a combined 11 \u2154 innings, so a small sample size. But it\u2019s promising. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=anders031jac,anders034jac,anders019jac,anderja02,anders027jac,anders035jac&amp;search=Jack+Anderson&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Anderson<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another name who, while he has let up runs, holds it steady when the game\u2019s already lost.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tyler Samaniego has been a nice find for the Red Sox. These young guys show promise, and while finding space for them may be tricky, with more pitchers coming back from injury, at least one of them deserves to be with this current squad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Issue #3: Lack Of Power\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has been a long-standing issue for Boston. The days of sluggers like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=ortizda01,ortiz-009dav&amp;search=David+Ortiz&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Ortiz<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/martijd02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.D. Martinez<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/deverra01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rafael Devers<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hitting 35+ homers are gone. In fact, while <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/contrwi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-05-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willson Contreras<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has seven, no one else on the team has over five. It\u2019s a concern because Fenway Park is seen as one of the most hitter-friendly parks in all of baseball. And in years past, that was evident. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take 2018, for example. The Red Sox had 208 homers as a team, 178 from the starting nine. Now, 2018 is way too good a squad to be compared to this year. But the sentiment is there. Not that Nu\u00f1ez is a bad player; he was very serviceable in his tenure here, but if he can hit six in Fenway, there\u2019s no reason this squad can\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Solution: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be Patient\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are certainly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/13\/three-realistic-names-add-red-sox\/\" target=\"_self\">realistic names<\/a> out there<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the free agent\/trade market currently, with the skepticism of the front office, it\u2019s better just to wait this out. These guys are talented hitters; it\u2019s just a matter of getting that boost. Boston had a terrible April and May last year, and they still managed to get two guys who hit 20+. If there were an easier solution, they would\u2019ve done something. But these guys can get it together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, it\u2019s still early. There are still around five months left of the season, but the Red Sox do need to turn things around, especially under a new coaching staff.
