That is what defines longevity. Altuve continues to be productive now in his 16th season in the major leagues. While Altuve is an elite hitter, one area he has had issues with recently is plate discipline. As a big hitter, his aggressive approach at the plate has yielded incredible results over the years.

However, Altuve’s ability to extend at-bats and stay in the zone can get a bit wild at times. This season, it’s been anything but. There’s been a clear improvement in Altuve’s walk rate, as pointed out by Chandler Rome of The Athletic.

Altuve drew eight walks through the first six games of the season, which is a career high during a six-game span to begin the year. This is also the first time Altuve has walked eight times in any regular-season seven-game stretch since July 2022. It’s been a while since he’s been able to trot over to first base consistently.

While he’s had a few big games lately, Altuve has now gone into a slump since his hot start. He’s 2/25 in his last five games. Either way, his walk numbers are still high, and he’s in the top 20 for walks in the AL.

What Changed for Jose Altuve Early

There are several reasons for this. One is likely the emphasis on getting back to the Astros’ golden-era batting culture. Carlos Correa spoke about how the team has bought into the mindset of grinding out at-bats into full counts and wearing out starting pitchers. It seems like Altuve has done more of that to start the year.

The automated ball-strike system could also be playing a factor. It significantly helps the batter work counts and review a borderline call. Altuve has already used the ABS review multiple times and has gotten a few calls in his favor.

As he continues to get older, Altuve will likely be more of a calm presence and choose which pitches to attack. His chase rate and swing rate have both gone down so far. The 5-foot-6 Venezuelan has a smaller strike zone than usual, and that can help him get the results he wants in the ABS.

The Numbers Back It up for Altuve

Altuve drew nine walks in the first eight games of the season and now has 16 walks in 29 games. Altuve had a career-high 66 walks in a season in back-to-back years from 2021-22 and will look to get back to that point again.

After the first week of the season, Altuve posted a 44.4 percent zone swing rate, which was much lower than his usual average of 65.7%. While he’s always been an aggressive hitter, that was a great rate and can open more options for him to get more hittable pitches.

Time To Get Back to It

Altuve has since gone back up to a 67 percent zone swing rate, which needs to go down for him to have success at the plate again. However, his chase rate has dropped 9% from last season, and his first-pitch swing rate has also dropped almost 7%. His swing rate overall has gone down almost five percent.

The improvement is there in terms of being less wild with the bat. Altuve’s aggressiveness has worked well for him in the past, but his new approach at the start of the year is something he needs to pick back up on. Altuve made it clear he wants to play at least 150 games this season after playing 155 games last season. That was his highest total of games since 2016.

It’s even more important considering Altuve had well over 100 strikeouts over the last two seasons for the first time in his career. He had a huge four-hit and two-home-run game for just the third time in his career against the Boston Red Sox on March 30. If he can get back to that offensive approach, hopefully the Astros can see more games from Altuve like that early matchup against the Red Sox.

Main Photo Credits: Maria Lysaker-Imagn Images

The Houston Astros’ offense has gotten out to a blistering start in 2026, and all the names across the starting lineup have contributed at some point so far.
