They came out of the gate strong, performing as one of the best units in the league over the first couple of weeks. While they have come back to the pack slightly since then, the Mariners’ starters have remained one of the most consistent rotations in baseball, ranking third in quality starts.

With Bryce Miller returning from injury and Kade Anderson emerging as one of the top pitching prospects in the game, difficult decisions may soon face the front office. With each starter now through six outings, it’s time to assess and rank the rotation based on their performance so far in 2026.

These rankings of the Mariners starters are based on performance, consistency, and overall impact through the first six starts.

Ranking the Mariners Starters Through Six Games Apiece

5. Luis Castillo

Following an impressive first start against the New York Yankees, Luis Castillo has struggled mightily in subsequent outings, conceding seven runs in two of his five starts and four runs in two more. As a result, even with a six-inning, scoreless outing, his ERA in 2026 sits at 6.35, with a WHIP of 1.73.

He has not been able to locate his pitches, and the arsenal that has been so consistent since joining Seattle in 2022 has not only been picked apart but hit hard across the park. Following five innings in Minnesota, where he gave up seven runs, his spot in the rotation has come under scrutiny, with Miller expected back sooner rather than later.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBX8ty8qty" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5450px; aspect-ratio: 5450/3633;" ></smartframe-embed>

Castillo has gone through rough stretches during his time in Seattle, including as recently as August last season, when he struggled for several consecutive outings before returning to form. He does have the protection of a large contract, which will make any front office decision difficult to navigate. However, Castillo will need to return to form soon, or the pressure will only increase.

4. Logan Gilbert

Perhaps a victim of expectations, Logan Gilbert, viewed internally as the ace of one of the best rotations in baseball, as shown by his Opening Day nod, has had a disappointing start to the 2026 season. In a vacuum, his performances have been fine, but for someone seeking a long-term contract, he has been subpar. More concerningly, the issues he showed in 2025 have carried over into 2026 and are beginning to hurt his overall effectiveness.

His stuff will always rank among the best in the league. Gilbert’s splitter remains one of the best individual pitches in baseball, and his strikeouts per nine innings still lead the Seattle staff at 9.93, with the rest of the rotation sitting in the 7–8 range. However, he has struggled to get out of innings efficiently. His pitch count climbs early in games, and he has found it difficult to work deep into starts, reaching six innings only twice in his first six outings. He attempted to counter this by adding a cutter and sinker in the offseason, but those pitches have not performed as hoped.

Logan Gilbert is rocking a career low in HR/9 & HR/FB

Byron Buxton clearly did not get the memo as he leaves the yard for the 7th time in 13 games pic.twitter.com/9qAjSOGCPu

— Baseball Unstitched (@BaseUnstitched) April 29, 2026

The issue is not his ability to generate whiffs but his inability to convert that into efficient innings, making it difficult for him to work deep into games and not providing the value of a top-end starter.

3. Emerson Hancock

While Gilbert may be a victim of expectation, Emerson Hancock may be a prisoner of reputation. Statistically, he has a case to rank higher, as he grades out extremely well in certain metrics, but in reality, the gap between him and the top two remains significant.

That said, this should not diminish his body of work so far this season. If you had told Mariners fans that through six starts, Hancock would be outperforming both Castillo and Gilbert, it would have been hard to believe based on his 2025 performances. However, he has reinvented himself in one offseason, and with Miller’s return imminent, he has given Jerry Dipoto a real decision to make. He has also firmly established himself as a full-time member of the rotation moving forward.

Emerson Hancock’s 2Ks in the 4th pic.twitter.com/J2JHm4fH2S

— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) April 16, 2026

Hancock’s results are driven more by efficiency than overpowering stuff, limiting walks and traffic to produce a strong WHIP. However, an elevated strand rate suggests some regression risk, even as he continues to perform like a solid mid-rotation arm.

2. George Kirby

“Furious” George Kirby has re-established himself as one of the league’s premier control pitchers following an up-and-down 2025. Always known for his elite command, built on throwing strikes and limiting walks, Kirby has returned to that foundation.

Following his injury in 2025, his lowered arm slot helped increase horizontal movement and improve his swing-and-miss potential. There were concerns that this change might impact his command and consistency, but those concerns now appear unfounded. Built around a fastball in the 98th percentile league-wide, paired with a ground-ball rate in the 93rd percentile and a low hard-hit rate, he is not only avoiding damage but actively suppressing quality contact.

No knuckleball for George Kirby this time vs. Corey Seager — instead, high heat.

Kirby has now held Seager 1-for-19 with 6 Ks. pic.twitter.com/Woe7tYdvvW

— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) April 18, 2026

While his strikeout and whiff rates sit around league average, even within this profile, there is still room for him to return to the peak levels he showed during his All-Star-caliber 2023 season. However, his floor remains extremely high, and his strong start to 2026 has reinforced his place among the upper tier of this rotation.

1. Bryan Woo

Following an outing in which he posted an ERA of 21.00, it may seem surprising to rank Bryan Woo number 1 among Mariners starters. However, that reflects just how dominant he had been in his previous five outings. His three innings in St. Louis, where he gave up seven runs, marked his worst start since the beginning of 2024. Given his consistency throughout 2025, this appears more like an outlier than a cause for concern.

Woo has worked into the seventh inning in half of his starts so far in 2026, providing valuable length at a time when both Castillo and Gilbert have struggled to do so, placing added strain on the bullpen. If you remove the three-inning, seven-run outing in St. Louis, Woo has established himself as one of the most efficient arms in the rotation, pairing a 0.88 WHIP with strong contact suppression, holding hitters to a .191 average. His strikeout rate sits around league average, but he offsets that with command and damage control, allowing just one home run and limiting big innings.

Bryan Woo’s 3rd, 4th and 5th Ks…and Sword ⚔️ pic.twitter.com/ZI4fCfuPWE

— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) April 19, 2026

Woo looked like the best pitcher in this talented group in 2025, and that has largely carried into 2026.
