Through four starts, he has posted a 6.05 ERA. That is by far the highest by any pitcher on the Yankees staff. His expected ERA (xERA) in that same span this season 5.21, according to <a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/luis-gil-661563?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baseball Savant<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/09\/yankees-end-the-cade-winquest-experiment-recall-luis-gil-for-rotation-return\/\" target=\"_self\">Gil did not make the Yankees roster out of spring training<\/a>, and it was because his advanced metrics look really bad. They called him up a few weeks ago, and besides one good start, it&#8217;s been a whole lot of bad.<\/p>\n<p>This could be the end of Gil as an MLB player. He currently does not have the stuff to get MLB players out. It&#8217;s a sobering fall from grace for someone who took the league by storm and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/11\/18\/paul-skenes-luis-gil-2024-rookie-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_self\">won the AL Rookie of the Year award in 2024<\/a>. This was Gil&#8217;s last minor leauge option and the Yankees did not want to use it. His poor performance forced their hands.<\/p>\n<h2>Who can take Gil&#8217;s rotation spot?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBOhpIVPVs\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6572px; aspect-ratio: 6572\/4382;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p>The good news for the Yankees is they have starters coming back from injury. <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rodonca01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carlos Rodon<\/a> is on a rehab assignment and is about two weeks away from returning to an MLB mound. <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/colege01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gerrit Cole<\/a> is also on a rehab assignment, though the Yankees are going to let him take his time as his injury (Tommy John surgery) has a longer recovery requirement.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, the Yankees will likely call up a bullpen arm for the week until a starter is needed Saturday. The Yankees have <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=cruz--000yov\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yovanny Cruz<\/a> in AAA, who has put up good numbers, who can come up and provide length out of the bullpen. It can be a piggyback situation with Cruz and one of <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/blackpa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Blackburn<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/yarbrry01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Yarbrough<\/a>. Blackburn and Yarbrough combined for five innings allowing just one run Sunday against the Astros.<\/p>\n<p>The Yankees can also give one of their top pitching prospects, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=rodrig000elm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elmer Rodriguez<\/a>, a look. Rodriguez has been good at AAA to start this season, posting a 1.27 ERA.
