The good thing with baseball is that the season is 162 games. The assumption is if it\u2019s not Tommy John or tearing a ligament, the player will return this season. In the case of the Red Sox however, it\u2019s a lot of injuries to one specific area early on. It\u2019s a little concerning, and it\u2019s not just at the major league level. Mandatory Credit: Bob DeChiara-Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grayso01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonny Gray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a shocking injury, as he pitched less than three innings before <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/20\/sonny-gray-exits-game-injury\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being pulled on Monday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He left the game due to right hamstring tightness and was placed on the injured list on Tuesday morning. This is a big loss for Boston currently, as it could be argued that Gray was their best pitcher in the rotation. With the lack of a serious injury, Gray could be healed by his next start date. However, MLB <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/glossary\/injuries\/15-day-injured-list\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">requires<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that pitchers on the injured list stay on there for about two weeks. Therefore, Gray\u2019s return will be pushed to about early May.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The subsequent roster move was calling up <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/samanty01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler Samaniego<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a rookie who\u2019s already had a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/18\/how-the-2026-red-sox-rookie-class-looks-so-far-ranked\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stellar start<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to his debut season. The bigger question is who will take over Gray\u2019s spot in the rotation. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tollepa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payton Tolle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems like the most likely candidate with <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/oviedjo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johan Oviedo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being injured. Although, it feels like they would\u2019ve called him up instead of Samaniego if that was the case. Time will tell who starts come Saturday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Justin Slaten<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBixTYma3Y\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2579px; aspect-ratio: 2579\/3868;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/slateju01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justin Slaten<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been one of the better bullpen arms this year for Boston, pitching a little over three innings but maintaining an ERA of 0.00. On April 5th he suffered a right oblique strain, causing him to be put on the injured list. During his time out, multiple pitchers have taken his role, including Samaniego and fellow rookie pitcher <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderja02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack Anderson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Anderson\u2019s kept it steady and has become a reliable arm in the bullpen, but Slaten\u2019s arm is missed surely as of now. While Slaten\u2019s IL stint passed the minimum time on Monday, he is still <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/fantasy\/baseball\/news\/red-soxs-justin-slaten-progresses-to-playing-catch\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expected to make a rehab assignment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Worcester before joining the big leagues again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Patrick Sandoval\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBPlptPreB\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3000px; aspect-ratio: 3000\/2216;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sandopa02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patrick Sandoval<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may have signed with the Red Sox in December of 2024, but due to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/06\/24\/angels-patrick-sandoval-tommy-john-surgery\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">season-ending UCL and Tommy John surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he has yet to make an appearance in a Red Sox uniform. The left hander has spent his career with the Los Angeles Angels, putting up an unfortunate record of 19-45. However, there are years where he\u2019s been decent; in 2022, he had an ERA+ of 138. Sandoval\u2019s one of three<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/10\/red-sox-rotation-depth-where-will-these-three-starters-end-up\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> major starters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the Red Sox are waiting for to return. Between him, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crawfku01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kutter Crawford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/houckta01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanner Houck<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he was projected to be the first to return. But there\u2019s been a setback.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He was <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/boston-red-sox\/news\/red-sox-pitcher-suffers-potential-injury-setback-during-rehab-start\/014f629080c41e55b860d289\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supposed to make a start on Saturday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Worcester, but was scratched due to bicep tightness. With Houck\u2019s timeline looking like the end of the year at best and Crawford being <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/boston-red-sox\/news\/red-sox-pitcher-who-hasnt-played-two-seasons-gives-injury-update\/2ced59ac3c13c9f1a4e9212b\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shut down for the time being<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the hope is for Sandoval to bounce back quickly. But the update on that will have to wait for now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Juan Valera\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highly touted prospect <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=valera001jua\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juan Valera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was taken out early in the Greenville Drive\u2019s game last Thursday. In a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.milb.com\/gameday\/hot-rods-vs-drive\/2026\/04\/16\/822177\/final\/box\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weird game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against the Bowling Green Hot Rods (in which the backup catcher pitched the last three innings), Valera left after the first inning. However, contrary to what it seemed like at the moment, the injury is not serious. The 100th best prospect <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/mlb\/news\/tantalizing-red-sox-prospect-joins-baseball-americas-top-100-list\/126e9d3a86ab305e9cc99cc3\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Baseball America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suffered elbow inflammation and avoided serious damage, being placed on the IL for two weeks. The flame-throwing 19 year old is one of the most coveted prospects in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/06\/red-sox-prospects-the-names-in-greenville-to-keep-an-eye-on\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stacked Greenville Drive squad<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so the more he\u2019s around, the better they are.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, those aren\u2019t the only four injured. Crawford and Houck, as mentioned, are out some time. Oviedo got upgraded from the 15 to the 60 day IL with his right flexor strain injury. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/u\/ubersty01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler Uberstine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is on the IL in Worcester with right shoulder soreness. The pitching depth has surely taken a lot of hits this early in the season.
