It was supposed to be an improvement from last year, but the same issue is haunting the Houston Astros more than ever. The injury bug has once again ravaged the Astros, specifically in the pitching department. It also hasn\u2019t spared the outfield.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How the Astros Can Overcome the Injury Bug<\/h2>\n<p>During the offseason, general manager Dana Brown and the front office specifically targeted improving the depth of the roster, specifically in pitching. While the debate is out on whether Brown and the Astros did enough to bolster that, the injury luck has just been brutal.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1200px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBSrxyjM7p\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6645px; aspect-ratio: 6645\/4430;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p>Every single day, it seemed like a new injury was added to the list. Some sort of move due to injury has taken place almost every single day in April. The <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/astros-injuries-and-roster-moves\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">injured list<\/a> has now grown to 16 players. It\u2019s mostly pitching, but also parts of the offense as well.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Pitching Depth Coming In<\/h2>\n<p>The fact is that the Astros did add multiple arms in the offseason. During spring training, it seemed like <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/28\/breaking-down-the-astros-2026-starting-pitching-rotation\/\" target=\"_self\">Houston\u2019s pitching staff<\/a> was in good shape. Both new starters, <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/burromi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Burrows<\/a> and <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/i\/imaita01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tatsuya Imai<\/a>, looked great back in March. Burrows was acquired in a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/12\/19\/pirates-rays-astros-swing-three-team-trade-brandon-lowe\/\" target=\"_self\">trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a>, while Imai, one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/14\/can-tatsuya-imai-become-next-yoshinobu-yamamoto\/\" target=\"_self\">top Japanese players<\/a> available, signed a three-year, $54 million deal.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Astros had <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=brownhu01,brown-010hun,brown-009hun,brown-008hun,brown-006hun&amp;search=Hunter+Brown&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hunter Brown<\/a> as the ace of the staff, followed by <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/javiecr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cristian Javier<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/31\/lance-mccullers-jr-red-sox\/\" target=\"_self\">finally healthy<\/a> <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcculla02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lance McCullers Jr.<\/a> Houston put together five arms and had options to go six deep thanks to <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/arrigsp01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spencer Arrighetti<\/a> in Triple-A and a variety of long relievers who could convert to starters.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A Continuous Stream of Astros Injuries<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s all shockingly come apart. While the Astros started 6-3, the injuries to the pitching staff kept mounting up. The starters were unable to go deep into games, which severely taxed the bullpen. The ace in Brown was the first to get injured with a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/10\/hunter-brown-shoulder-injury-what-it-means-for-astros\/\" target=\"_self\">Grade 2 shoulder strain<\/a>. This was Brown\u2019s first time on the injured list. The big hole only got bigger as Javier also suffered a Grade 2 shoulder strain just a week later.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Brown said on <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SportsTalk790?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@SportsTalk790<\/a> that late May\/early June is timetable for return of Hunter Brown and Cristian Javier. \u201cHopefully it could be a little sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brianmctaggart\/status\/2045925417006031035?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">April 19, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The Colorado and Seattle road trip was a nightmare for the Astros, as they went 1-9. Two more key starting pitching injuries were added during this stretch in Seattle. Imai only went through 1\/3 of an inning against the Mariners and was later shockingly placed on the 15-day IL due to arm fatigue.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/boltoco01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cody Bolton<\/a> went down two days later with mid-back inflammation and pitched only one inning. He was hit in the back during his previous start in Colorado, but it didn\u2019t seem to affect him then. It came back in his next start.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Piling On<\/h2>\n<p>To make matters even worse, both center fielder <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=meyerja02,meyers003jak&amp;search=Jake+Meyers&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Meyers<\/a> and shortstop <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/penaje02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeremy Pe<span>\u00f1<\/span>a<\/a> were also placed on the IL during the road trip. Meyers suffered a Grade 2 right oblique strain in Colorado, while Pe<span>\u00f1<\/span>a has a Grade 1 right hamstring strain.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Astros announce right shoulder tightness for Cristian Javier, and lower-back tightness for Jake Meyers. <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/11I7tWkPeY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/11I7tWkPeY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Manny Randhawa (@MannyOnMLB) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MannyOnMLB\/status\/2041968405742592037?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">April 8, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The injury train keeps on rolling for the Astros, as both <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/loperjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joey Loperfido<\/a> and <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/trammta01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taylor Trammell<\/a> are on the IL. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/24\/astros-reacquired-fan-favorite-outfielder-who-could-play-key-role\/\" target=\"_self\">fan favorite<\/a> Loperfido has a right quad strain, which is considered minor, while Trammell has a serious left groin injury. Infield utilityman <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=allenni02,allenni01,allen-006nic&amp;search=Nick+Allen&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Allen<\/a> was suddenly added as well with back spasms. That also looks to take some time.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What Has to Change<\/h2>\n<p>While the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/03\/how-astros-offense-exploded-start-2026-season\/\" target=\"_self\">offense has done well<\/a>, it\u2019s just impossible to win if the pitching is going to give up at least seven runs in each game, even with the best offense in baseball.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Astros will need Burrows to truly step up and be the option that was expected of him. Arrighetti was finally called up, and he came through big time against the Rockies, with six innings of one-run ball along with two hits and 10 strikeouts. He followed that up with two runs given in five innings against the Cleveland Guardians on Monday.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Houston will need him to be their best pitcher at the moment. McCullers Jr. has to show his vintage form as well. These are the three main pitchers Houston has.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Big Question Marks Ahead<\/h2>\n<p>Clearly, enough thought into starting depth was not there from the Astros, even with the moves made. It\u2019s looking like they weren\u2019t sufficient. Relying on Javier as a third starter who hasn\u2019t looked the same since his injury and Burrows, who has never been in the position he\u2019s in right now, was a lot to ask for. Not to mention the fact that it would take some time for Imai to get used to the American setup. McCullers Jr. has constantly dealt with injuries.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Astros will need one of their long relievers to show up to the party. Houston will need a guy like <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/weissry01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Weiss<\/a> to get used to a starter role and potentially <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pearsna01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nate Pearson<\/a> if he\u2019s ready in time.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> The Astros also didn&#8217;t add a big-time reliever for high-leverage situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Late May\/early June is expected to be the time frame for many key players to come back. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/26\/what-all-star-closer-josh-hader-latest-setback-means-astros\/\" target=\"_self\">incoming return of All-Star closer<\/a> <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/haderjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Hader<\/a> at that point will help as he looks on track. That will also be when Brown and Javier can come back. Imai\u2019s return could likely happen by that point as well. Loperfido and Bolton are expected to be back in May, and even Pe<span>\u00f1<\/span>a could give his strain is a grade one.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019ll be roughly another month that the Astros will have to grind and figure it out. The problem is that the Astros are relying on fewer individuals with much larger tasks than normal. Unfortunately, they have no choice but to rely on those unfamiliar players to come through.<\/p>\n<h2>Starters Need to Go Deep<\/h2>\n<p>The fifth starter option, either <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lambepe01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter Lambert<\/a> or a call-up from <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alexaja01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Alexander<\/a>, to put together some innings, will be crucial.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Astros starters have to go five innings, but also give the offense a chance. The bullpen hasn\u2019t always struggled when not being overloaded. The &#8216;pen has been under enormous pressure and thrown into the fire early. When they get put in a normal situation by the fifth or sixth, it gives them a chance to piece the game together.<\/p>\n<p><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/matthbr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brice Matthews<\/a> will have to chip in on offense, especially now that Meyers, Loperfido, and Trammell are all out. <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/whitcsh01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shay Whitcomb<\/a>, who was called up, will also play a bunch of left field, given the shortage. The key is for someone to help out <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithca07.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Smith<\/a>, who\u2019s in right field and has done a great job on both sides of the ball.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In terms of good news, lefty reliever <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sousabe01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bennett Sousa<\/a> is expected to return this month, while infielder <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dezenza01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Dezenzo<\/a> is around the corner.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Astros have depth in place; the key is the quality of depth. If the starters can deliver a couple of decent starts and go somewhat deep, everything else can get sorted out.
