There&#8217;s <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/raleica01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-09_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cal Raleigh<\/a>, <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=ramire022jos,ramire032jos,ramire039jos&amp;search=Jose+Ramirez&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-09_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jose Ramirez<\/a>, and <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/storytr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-09_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trevor Story<\/a>, just to name a few, but at least they are not playing for a new contract at the conclusion of this season. <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chishja01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-09_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jazz Chisholm Jr.<\/a>, on the other hand, does not have that luxury; the New York Yankees\u2019 second baseman has not just been one of New York\u2019s worst hitters, but one of the worst in the entire league, possibly putting his future with the Yankees in question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1200px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBSyP7iNvq\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5997px; aspect-ratio: 5997\/3998;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through 12 games, Chisholm is slashing .186\/.255\/.256 with three RBI, three extra-base hits (no home runs), and just two runs scored. The Bahamas native hasn\u2019t started a season this badly since he debuted with the Miami Marlins in 2020. This kind of stretch is certainly not what he, nor the Yankees, want to see at the beginning of a walk year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Jazz Chisholm Jr.&#8217;s Future in the Bronx Could Be In Doubt if Struggles Continue<\/h2>\n<h2>All Talk, No Walk<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The irony of Chisholm\u2019s horrendous start to the season is that just a few short months ago, he was considered a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/01\/yankees-need-mass-production-from-these-three-x-factors\/\" target=\"_self\">potential x-factor<\/a> for the team and talking about chasing a 50-50 season in 2026. With <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/ohtansh01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-09_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shohei Ohtani<\/a> as the only member of that prestigious club, it was a lofty goal to shoot for. But now that objective just looks silly, especially considering that Chisholm&#8217;s career highs in homers and stolen bases are 31 (2025) and 40 (2024), respectively, plus he didn&#8217;t even set them in the same season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, Chisholm has still proven himself as a dynamic and talented player; over the last two seasons (277 games), he has 55 home runs, 153 RBI, 77 stolen bases, 149 runs scored, and a .784 OPS. Despite the fact that he is one of the best defensive second basemen in the game (and usually an above-average hitter), New York might not have him in their plans beyond this season. The Yankees almost <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/03\/yankees-must-give-contract-extensions-rice-schlittler-warren\/\" target=\"_self\"> extend players<\/a>, at least since making the mistake of extending <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hicksaa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-09_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Hicks<\/a> to a seven-year deal back in 2019. Plus, the Yankees just might be banking on one of their top prospects to be their franchise second baseman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=lombar002geo&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-09_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Lombard Jr.<\/a>, at just 20 years old, is already making headlines as one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/14\/latest-round-yankees-spring-cuts-contains-handful-promising-prospects\/\" target=\"_self\">Yankees\u2019 most promising prospects<\/a>. Coming into the year as their No. 1 prospect according to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/milb\/prospects\/yankees\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MLB Pipeline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Yankees could be relying on Lombard to be Chisholm\u2019s replacement if the two sides can\u2019t come to an agreement at the conclusion of the season. Though Lombard is a natural shortstop, his defensive skills could easily translate to second or even third base.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if the Yankees <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plan on extending Chisholm\u2019s time in the Bronx, he\u2019ll have to start performing very soon. This is especially dire because of how top-heavy New York\u2019s lineup has become, with its 6-9 hitters combining for a .483 OPS through Wednesday\u2019s action.
