The club is running back almost the same roster as 2025 with a few additions, specifically to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/23\/yankees-open-2026-with-four-man-rotation\/\" target=\"_self\">starting rotation<\/a>. One addition to focus on is left-handed starter <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/weathry01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-08_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Weathers<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Yankees didn\u2019t shop a lot this offseason. If anything, they caulked the creases of the roster that needed filling and added a big-game pitcher. Weathers was one of their more notable names in terms of acquisitions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weathers pitched for the Miami Marlins last season, only going a total of 38 1\/3 innings. He finished with a 2-2 record in eight starts and a 3.99 ERA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most innings he\u2019s thrown in any given season was 94 2\/3 back in 2021 with the San Diego Padres, followed by 86 2\/3 in 2024 with the Marlins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1200px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBov7MDjhY\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072\/2161;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This season, Weathers will play a big role as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/01\/16\/heres-what-the-newest-member-of-the-yankees-rotation-offers\/\" target=\"_self\">newest member of the rotation<\/a>, especially with <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/colege01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-08_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gerrit Cole<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/25\/what-should-the-yankees-expect-from-gerrit-cole-in-2026\/\" target=\"_self\">recovering from Tommy John surgery<\/a>, <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rodonca01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-08_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carlos Rod\u00f3n<\/a> s<\/span>uffering a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/31\/yankees-carlos-rodon-reports-hamstring-tightness-during-rehab\/\" target=\"_self\">setback in his rehab<\/a>, and <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=gillu01,gil---004lui&amp;search=Luis+Gil&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-08_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luis Gil<\/a> currently unavailable. His offerings from the left side, along with depth offerings, are important to the club.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryan Weathers has had two starts so far for the Yankees; one on the road and one in the Bronx. It is important to check in on how the new additions fare in their debuts in pinstripes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What We\u2019ve Seen from Ryan Weathers in a Yankees Uniform\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weathers took the ball in his first start against the Seattle Mariners on March 30th. The left-hander threw 4 1\/3 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, striking out seven Mariners hitters, and only walking two.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So visually, what did we see? From an analytical standpoint, he was very fundamentally sound in terms of mechanics. His delivery was symmetrical, his arm kept up, and he followed through with his release point.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weathers was very consistent with his mechanics and was very repeatable. In terms of command and location, the lefty was generous but narcissistic with his strikes. He worked the zone very well but stayed off the hot spots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Statistics and Metrics<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new Yankee addition finished with 77 pitches and 49 strikes thrown. He had 13 called strikes, 11 swinging strikes, 15 foul balls, and nine in-game strikes. Weathers understood his opponent and understood zoning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most Mariners hitters saw a ton of four-seam fastballs worked high and in, high and out, or in on the hands. Some of Seattle&#8217;s better hitters, such as <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/naylojo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-08_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Naylor<\/a> and <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/arozara01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-08_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Randy Arozarena<\/a>, rarely saw fastballs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Naylor&#8217;s first at-bat, he saw four pitches; three sinkers. Two of these were on the hands, and one was low and outside. It was a frigid Saturday night start against his former team, the Marlins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His line here was a little less impressive, only lasting 3 2\/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, four strikeouts, and three walks. Weathers did seem a bit uncomfortable, which could\u2019ve been because of the climate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ball didn\u2019t seem to come out of his hand well, and his pitches looked flat. If anything, his fastball resembled a beach ball. Mariners hitters made good contact, allowing themselves a shot to get on base and get over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manager <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/booneaa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Boone<\/a> decided to take the left-hander out before he could complete four innings. This looked like a bad day for Weathers, but nothing to be too concerned about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A Silver Lining<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A positive note that came out of this game was Weathers&#8217; fastball velocity, which maxed at 99.3 mph and averaged 96.7 mph. His sinker sat at 95 mph, maxing at 98 mph, and his sweeper maxed at 84 mph.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, Weathers showed positives all around between the two outings. It\u2019s safe to say that four to five innings of work may be his comfort zone, and that of Yankees management.
