Their elite pitching staff deserves most of the credit, having given up a mere eight runs through their first seven games. However, there is one hitter whose scorching start is being overshadowed by the dominance of New York\u2019s pitching.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That hitter is Ben Rice, of course. The catcher-turned-first-baseman is picking up <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/01\/03\/rice-is-key-for-yankees-next-season\/\" target=\"_self\">right where he left off last season<\/a>, slashing .409\/.500\/.864 with nine hits, including two homers and four doubles, and eight RBI. Anyone who watched <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ricebe01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rice<\/a> on the Yankees last season should have seen this coming, despite the fact that he \u201conly\u201d had an .836 OPS, 26 home runs, and 65 RBI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: 1200px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9\" image-id=\"fwuQbJXvA6MZ\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3900px; aspect-ratio: 3900\/2700;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h2>Scorching Start by Ben Rice Helping to Spur MLB-Best Yankees<\/h2>\n<h2>Hidden in the Stats<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baseball Savant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Rice was one of the unluckiest hitters in the entire league in 2025. This is because he registered one of the highest xwOBA (expected weighted on-base average) in all of MLB, with a mark of .394. His expected batting average, .283, was also significantly lower than his actual average (.255). His average exit velo, barrel rate, hard-hit rate, and chase rate were also in the top 10% of all qualified hitters last season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was only a matter of time before all of those hard-hit balls turned into hits rather than tough outs. With <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wellsau01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austin Wells<\/a> already locked in as the Yankees\u2019 first-string catcher, Rice made the transition to first base, sharing starts with veteran <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/goldspa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Goldschmidt<\/a>. It appears that Goldschmidt, a four-time Gold Glove winner, is rubbing off on Rice, who already looks much more comfortable at the position than he did even just a few months ago. Add that on top of the fact that he is still a serviceable catcher and could easily serve as a backup for any team, and it\u2019s safe to say that Ben Rice provides value to the Yankees that goes way beyond what meets the eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With some of the game\u2019s most well-known stars like <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/judgeaa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Judge<\/a>, <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stantmi03.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Giancarlo Stanton<\/a>, and <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chishja01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jazz Chisholm Jr.<\/a> in New York\u2019s deep lineup, it\u2019s easy to overlook <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/03\/yankees-must-give-contract-extensions-rice-schlittler-warren\/\" target=\"_self\">hitters like Rice<\/a>.
