This Dominican outfielder with the name of an American factory worker was a standout player for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toronto Blue Jays<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the decade of excess. Although not bound for Cooperstown, Bell finished in the top eight or better of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/01\/28\/3-2026-al-mvp-favorites-not-named-aaron-judge\/\" target=\"_self\">American League MVP<\/a> voting four times, including <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/02\/whos-that-dude-some-of-mlbs-most-obscure-mvps-part-one\/\" target=\"_self\">winning the award<\/a> in 1987.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Opening Day upon us, let\u2019s put the spotlight on George Bell for another reason. In 1988, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he became the first MLB player to hit <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/players-with-3-home-runs-on-opening-day-c268442342\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">three home runs on Opening Day<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Let\u2019s hop in the time machine with Doc Brown and revisit that special moment in baseball history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: 610px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBPfL6Vzhf\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 6000\/4000;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h2><b>The 1987 AL MVP&#8217;s Origin Story<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not quite in the same league as Hall of Famers <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jenkife01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ferguson Jenkins<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sandbry01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryne Sandberg<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but George Bell started off in the Philadelphia Phillies\u2019 system as an amateur free agent signing before going on to a successful career in the bigs. Only 19, he had a banner season in 1979 with the Phils\u2019 Single-A affiliate: 22 homers, 102 RBI, a .305 batting average, and an .895 OPS. Prior to the 1981 season, the Jays snagged Bell in the Rule 5 draft. Toronto ended up getting a reliable outfielder for the rest of the decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Breakout<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1984, George Bell had a breakout year with 26 homers, 87 RBI, a .292 batting average, and 177 hits. The power numbers continued to rise, topping out in his <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1987.shtml#all_AL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AL MVP season of 1987<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That year, Bell went for 47 bombs, drove in 134, collected 369 total bases, and had an OPS of .957. This outfielder\u2019s development coincided with Toronto\u2019s climb from AL East doormat to perennial contender. After starting their existence with six consecutive losing years from 1977 to 1982, the team had at least a winning record from 1983 to 1993 and did much better than that a few times.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>George Bell\u2019s Big Opening Day<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/boxes\/KCA\/KCA198804040.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Opening Day in 1988<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Blue Jays were on the road facing the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kansas City Royals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Two-time AL Cy Young winner <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/saberbr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bret Saberhagen<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was on the mound. That didn\u2019t seem to bother George Bell at all. He homered off the Royals\u2019 ace in the second, fourth, and eighth innings. He is coming off a MVP Season &amp; is the 1st Blue Jay ever to win the MVP.
