This didn\u2019t last long however, as going into the Wild Card series, they suffered multiple major injuries and lost to their rival in the New York Yankees. Despite making the playoffs, there were some clear issues to fix with this team. Going into the offseason, Craig Breslow had a lot of work to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key point was pitching upgrades. Some would say he overachieved there with <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/suarera01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ranger Suarez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> signing and trading for <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grayso01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonny Gray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/oviedjo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johan Oviedo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There was also acquiring right-handed bats to even out this leftie-heavy lineup. This was also accomplished with the acquisitions of guys like <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/contrwi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willson Contreras<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/durbica01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caleb Durbin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Recently, a big need was more experience in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/24\/internal-external-left-handed-bullpen-arms-options-red-sox\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">left handed bullpen pitchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/12\/red-sox-adding-36-year-old-lefty-reliever\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent signing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of veteran pitcher <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/couloda01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danny Coulombe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that is at least filled for the short-term success. But there are still some major needs to be filled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Three Biggest Needs For The Red Sox Going Into 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>1. Backup Catcher<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t seen as a major need, as there\u2019s plenty of options, but it\u2019s still a valid question. It\u2019s been determined since last season that barring injury, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/couloda01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carlos Narvaez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the starter. But what about the back up? Due to performance reasons from last year, it\u2019s fair enough to open up a real conversation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The Probable: <\/b><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wongco01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connor Wong\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being the remaining piece from the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bettsmo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mookie Betts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trade in 2020, the Red Sox have made Wong a staple in the organization. Even with Narvaez, he still started at least once every rotation cycle, mainly serving as <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bellobr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brayan Bello<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s guy. Despite being an above-average hitter in 2024, he had arguably his worst offensive season of his career in 2025. Batting .190, Wong did not get an extra base hit <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/gl.fcgi?id=wongco01&amp;t=b&amp;year=2025\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">until late July<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against his former team in the Los Angeles Dodgers. His first multi hit game didn\u2019t come till July 30th. To say he struggled offensively would be an understatement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defensively, he\u2019s never <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been great. He\u2019s had seasons that are relatively better than others, but with a career DRS of -4, it\u2019s hard to claim what\u2019s good when being a below average catcher. In 2024, he had a -14 DRS, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/archive.fieldingbible.com\/DRSLeaderboard\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second worst among all catchers that year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He was just outside the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/leaderboard\/catcher-framing\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top 25 in framing runs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but he had 0 catcher framing runs compared to Narvaez\u2019s 5. He might be the backup, but it\u2019s worth having a discussion of whether he should be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The Backup: <\/b><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thaisma01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt Thaiss\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thaiss is a journeyman that\u2019s split time with several teams, including the Chicago White Sox\u00a0 and Tampa Bay Rays last year. He\u2019s also had trouble with his batting average. But unlike Wong, Thaiss has had a great eye, and a great walk rate. With a 15.3% last season and a 13.1% career BB%. The 15.3 crushes Wong and Narvaez\u2019s walk rates by almost seven percent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defensively, while he didn\u2019t have as many games to qualify, He did have five <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/matt-thaiss-642136\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0framing runs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tying him with Narvaez. His blocking is just outside the top ten with five blocks above average (Narvaez is ninth with six.).\u00a0 But his pop time is about average at two seconds flat. If Boston really wants him, they need to make a decision fast. Thaiss has an <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2026\/03\/matt-thaiss-has-upward-mobility-clause-in-red-sox-deal.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upward mobility clause <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that allows him to sign with another team if not on the 40 man roster by March 21st. The decision must be made soon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The Underrated: <\/b><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gaspemi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mickey Gasper<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The former Red Sox rejoined in February, being claimed off waivers. In his first stint with Boston, he did not do well, going 0-16 with four\u00a0 walks and being hit by a pitch once. He was later traded to the Minnesota Twins, where he only did slightly better hitting wise, but he had ten walks. While he may not be good for a full time backup, with his ability to draw walks, he might be worth a spot on the 40 man or just outside. Gasper killed it in Worcester when he was last with them, batting .402 with eight homers in 40 games. The decrease in hitting is what makes choosing him as a backup wary, but he\u2019s having a great Spring Training and just<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/red-sox-catcher-joins-team-161044642.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> got called to team Italy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the WBC. If he can continue even 60% of this success, he\u2019d be a good backup option.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<h3><b>2. Power Hitter\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The obvious major need going into this offseason that wasn\u2019t addressed immediately was the need for a power hitter. After controversially letting go of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/deverra01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rafael Devers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> midseason last year, the Red Sox got rid of their yearly 30 homer-100 RBI threat. So the big question loomed: where does the production come from now?<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The Probable: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In House Production<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite names like <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schwaky01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyle Schwarber<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alonspe01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pete Alonso<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being on the free agent market, the Red Sox stuck with what they had and didn\u2019t acquire any big name power guys. And honestly, there\u2019s a case to be made that it might be a good decision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before mentioning this, this is by no means a declaration that Boston will get anywhere close to the most home runs in a season. This is just showing that big contracts don\u2019t need to be handed out to find production. The<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/MIN\/2019.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2019 Minnesota Twins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are tied for the most home runs by a team in a single season with 307. Here are the hitters they signed\/traded for that offseason, along with their contract valuation and home run total:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gonzama01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marwin Gonzalez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Two Years\/21 Mill, 15 HRs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cruzne02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nelson Cruz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: One Year\/14.5 Mill, 41 HRs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/MIN\/2019.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jonathan Schoop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: One Year\/7.5 Mill, 23 HRs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/croncj01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C.J. Cron<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Off Waivers, 4.8 Mill, 25 HRs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those counting, that\u2019s 104 of the 307 right there. It\u2019s a lot of production, with almost a third of the homers coming from outside help. Here\u2019s the Red Sox\u2019s additions this offseason for comparison<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durbin: Traded, 796K for 2026, 11 HRs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contreras: Traded, 18 Mill for 2026, 20 HRs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kineris01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isiah Kiner-Falefa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: One year\/Six mill, two HRs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/monasan01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andruw Monasterio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0 One year\/820K, four HRs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is 37 homers. But the Red Sox did have six players who hit 15+ homers in 2025, with <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/storytr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trevor Story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/abreuwi02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilyer Abreu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hitting 20+. If <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anthoro01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roman Anthony<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can replace <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bregmal01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Bregman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s offensive production there, and maybe a surprise leap or two, Boston could have close to ten guys in the 12-15+ range. It\u2019s not great, but it\u2019s progress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The Backup\/The Underrated: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rowdy Tellez or Triston Casas<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking at the free agent market for hitters remaining, there\u2019s not a lot of great options. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tellero01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rowdy Tellez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the best available, who hit 17 last year. The question would solely rest on how healthy <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/casastr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triston Casas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is. If he produces fine as a backup, there\u2019s no need to search the market. However, if he struggles or gets injured again, it might be best to give out a one year contract to Tellez. He won\u2019t get the playing time that he has in the past, but his bat would be useful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Second Base<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest discussion in Spring Training has been who will start at second and third. With <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/coraal01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Cora<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announcing recently that Durbin will start at third base, leaving the conversations for second to begin. While there is no clear favorite yet, one can assume Kiner-Falefa won\u2019t be a starter and instead more of a utility guy like <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gonzaro01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romy Gonzalez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So that leaves three names.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The Predicted Starter: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andruw Monasterio<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acquired in the Durbin trade in early February, Monasterio had a good season in a short role, batting .270 in 68 games as well as a fielding percentage of 1.000 at second. This Spring training he\u2019s got a slash of .348\/.448\/.522 and has <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/boston-red-sox\/news\/red-sox-manager-alex-cora-praises-andruw-monasterios-athleticism-versatility\/374697f220a7d533aeed0fa0\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received major praise from Cora<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It appears that he\u2019ll make the Opening Day roster regardless, due to Gonzalez\u2019s injury. But there\u2019s a high chance he\u2019ll start at second base by that time too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The Homegrown Options: <\/b><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mayerma01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcelo Mayer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/campbkr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristian Campbell<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayer and Campbell have been mainstays in the Red Sox minor league system the past couple years, being hailed as the \u201cbig three\u201d along with Anthony. Campbell was the first of them to make his major league debut to fill the hole at second. He started out really good, hitting winning AL Rookie of the Month in April and hitting .301<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/gl.fcgi?id=campbkr01&amp;t=b&amp;year=2025\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the end of the month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, throughout May, his average started to slip consistently, as low as .220 in June. Campbell also wasn\u2019t good defensively, committing seven errors at second base. While they do plan to keep Campbell in any capacity, including <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/bosoxinjection.com\/red-sox-fans-are-rolling-their-eyes-at-alex-coras-new-plan-for-kristian-campbell\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">possibly new positions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s probably best for him to take at least part of this season in the minors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for Mayer, when Bregman went down, he took some time at third. Drafted as a shortstop, it was the same side of the infield, and he did okay. He had an average DRS at 0, but also only committed one error at third. At second base, where the main focus is, he didn\u2019t commit any errors and has a fielding percentage of 1.000. The issue isn\u2019t his glove. It\u2019s his bat. He batted .228 last year with a strikeout to walk ratio of just over 5\/1. Mayer has been the discussion as the biggest name for the Sox <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/boston-red-sox\/news\/red-soxs-alex-cora-wont-commit-marcelo-mayers-opening-day-status\/c3fd7e74eae056ab0c054258\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">possibly being left off<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Opening Day roster. They also haven\u2019t <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2026\/03\/red-sox-have-not-discussed-long-term-deal-with-marcelo-mayer.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">committed to a long term deal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with him. Mayer\u2019s time with the team in 2026 is uncertain as of now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Red Sox on paper have fixed many of their holes, there\u2019s still some major positions to fix. And given injury or poor performance, there could be more.
