Many fans are optimistic, while others are skeptical. Wherever you stand, hopefully, you have some excitement for the upcoming 2026 season. Each year, some players end up putting up some impressive numbers who you have never heard of before. Sometimes it\u2019s a name you know that just hasn&#8217;t produced a fully impressive statistical season yet. That\u2019s when you get the term breakout season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some guys you may or may not know that could be on the brink of a breakout season this year in MLB. Let\u2019s start with the junior circuit. Who is breaking out in 2026 \u2026 American League Edition?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Trey Yesavage<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, this is an admittedly trendy pick because of his performance in the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/TOR\/2025.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025 postseason<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/yesavtr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trey Yesavage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems primed to break out this season. This starting pitcher only made three regular-season starts last September, so he retains his rookie status for 2026. His nasty stuff had him register a 12.7 SO9 mark in several clutch postseason appearances. When you project that stuff over 30+ starts in the regular season for the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/TOR\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toronto Blue Jays<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this year, Yesavage could have a breakout season in Toronto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"aligncenter\"><p class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 610px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBkRGElWUd\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072\/2048;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lane Thomas<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember this guy? Only three seasons ago, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thomala02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lane Thomas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a young stud outfielder for the Nationals with 28 homers, 86 ribbies, and 20 stolen bases. After some injuries and poor production over the last two years, Thomas signed a barely noticeable one-year deal with the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/KCR\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kansas City Royals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for 2026. Technically, he already had his breakout season, but he is set up to do that again. Expected to hit at the bottom of a KC lineup that is top-heavy, Thomas should see a lot of pitches to hit and be beneath the radar. Rebilas-Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b>Royce Lewis<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lewisro02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Royce Lewis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems to be a yearly candidate for these types of lists, but staying healthy has been a persistent issue for this talented <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/MIN\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesota Twins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> third baseman. Last year, he <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">topped out<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with only 106 games played. His 162-game averages would be 29 home runs and 98 RBIs. The Twins aren\u2019t expected to contend in 2026, so maybe that lack of expectations will pave the way for Lewis to have his long-awaited breakout season. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/twins\/video\/lewis-four-homer-postseason\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget that this dude is not shy when it comes to big October moments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"aligncenter\"><p class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 610px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBcJAeCLmd\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4654px; aspect-ratio: 4654\/3103;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p><\/p>\n<h2><b>Logan O\u2019Hoppe<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may not know this catcher on the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/ANA\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles Angels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but he can hit. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/ohopplo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Logan O\u2019Hoppe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was once a highly touted Philadelphia Phillies\u2019 prospect. He struggled last year in only 119 games, but the previous season he had a 2.7 WAR with 20 home runs and 56 ribbies as a backstop. Some may consider him an afterthought in the Halos lineup, but that puts him in a good position for a breakout season in 2026. Mandatory Credit: Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b>Cam Smith<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an aging core, the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/HOU\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston Astros<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> really need some of their homegrown talent to produce this year. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithca07.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cam Smith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a first-rounder in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/draft\/index.fcgi?year_ID=2024&amp;draft_round=1&amp;draft_type=junreg&amp;query_type=year_round\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, could be that guy for them. In 2025, this outfielder had modest numbers, but he still finished 10th in the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2025.shtml#all_AL_ROY_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AL ROY race<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This dude was a .313 hitter in his lone minor league season in 2024. So, he didn\u2019t get to marinate too long before the Astros moved him into <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tuckeky01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Tucker\u2019s<\/a> vacated spot last year. One of those studs is outfielder <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/butlela01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lawrence Butler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This smooth lefty bat is only 25 years old and has combined for 43 homers over the last two years. His strikeout numbers, 179 in 2025, do need to drop for Butler to become an elite hitter. But &#8230; that is part of the maturation process for Major Leaguers. Bringing in a professional hitter like veteran <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcneije01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff McNeil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should rub off on Butler. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/lawrence-butler-records-second-three-homer-game\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This potent youngster already owns two three-homer games in his burgeoning career<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
