With the departures of <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/ceasedy01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dylan Cease<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kingmi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael King<\/a> in free agency, the Friars were scrambling to find pitching help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They began to solve that problem by <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/michael-king-padres-contract\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">re-signing King<\/a> to a 3-year, $75 million deal. That along with the return of <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pivetni01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Pivetta<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/musgrjo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Musgrove<\/a> helped solidify a formidable front half to the starting group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But behind that it gets shaky. Shakier still with <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2026\/03\/10\/joe-musgrove-is-getting-extra-rest-which-is-not-entirely-unexpected\/#:~:text=There%20has%20been%20no%20suggestion%20that%20Musgrove,rotation%20at%20the%20start%20of%20the%20season.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the report<\/a> that Musgrove may not be ready by Opening Day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General Manager A.J. Preller has helped to assuage the questions of depth in the starting group, bringing on <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/buehlwa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Walker Buehler<\/a>, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cannigr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Griffin Canning<\/a>, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gonzama02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marco Gonzales<\/a>, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/marquge01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Germ\u00e1n M\u00e1rquez<\/a>, and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mckentr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Triston McKenzie<\/a> on smaller deals this offseason. Already in the Friars\u2019 system are <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/searsjp01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JP Sears<\/a>, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vasqura02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Randy V\u00e1squez<\/a>, and knuckleballer <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/waldrma01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Waldron<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Penciled In Fourth<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBqEbxbsdF\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3600px; aspect-ratio: 3600\/2400;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Opening Day marches closer, the Padres\u2019 rotation picture continues to become clearer. It\u2019s been reported since quite early in the offseason that V\u00e1squez has the inside track on the fourth starter role. With the news of Musgrove\u2019s stalled return, he\u2019d start the season third behind Pivetta and King.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">V\u00e1squez easily earned that spot last season when he put up a career year with San Diego. He finished with a 3.84 ERA in a career-high 26 starts, taking the mound consistently for the Friars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s done even more to earn the role during Cactus League play. In three starts thus far, V\u00e1squez has notched a 2.08 ERA in 8 \u2154 innings. All while holding a 1.04 WHIP, limiting batters to a combined nine walks\/hits this spring.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Depth Pieces Give Stability to Starting Group<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>But&#8230;Injuries Remove Some Options<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behind those four there remains one spot between Buehler, Canning, Gonzales, M\u00e1rquez, McKenzie, Sears, and Waldron. However, another spot would open up if Musgrove starts the season with a short stint on the injured list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canning will open the season on the injured list while continuing to recover from the ruptured left Achilles tendon that ended his \u201825 season with the New York Mets. Waldron has also been sidelined due to an injury he suffered earlier this spring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Remaining Starting Opportunities for San Diego<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That leaves Buehler, Gonzales, M\u00e1rquez, McKenzie, and Sears. Unfortunately Sears and McKenzie have struggled this spring, posting a 9.45 and 12.46 ERA, respectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The longtime Colorado Rockies ace, M\u00e1rquez, signed a big-league deal with the Friars and will have to be with the club on Opening Day. He surrendered two runs on five hits and struck out two batters. Certainly nothing spectacular but it was solid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If M\u00e1rquez and Buehler can rediscover their pre-Tommy John form (even to a small degree), the Friars will suddenly have one of the better rotations in MLB.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Final Picture on Opening Day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOB7unJa98V\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4832px; aspect-ratio: 4832\/2880;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of all these factors (injury, Cactus League performance, etc.), the Opening Day starting group will probably look something like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nick Pivetta<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael King<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Randy V\u00e1squez<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Germ\u00e1n M\u00e1rquez<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walker Buehler<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once Musgrove returns he\u2019ll slot into that third spot and bump the rest down, with Buehler likely going down to Triple-A El Paso. It\u2019s always possible he pitches well enough to earn starts over M\u00e1rquez with the big-league club.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Diego has talked about the idea of a six-man rotation but will probably stick to five so that they don\u2019t have to give up a pitcher from their elite bullpen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However the starting group ends up, it will certainly be an interesting year for San Diego.
