And in a way, he\u2019s upgraded it via trades and free agency. The current Opening Day projected rotation looks like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crochga01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garrett Crochet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/suarera01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ranger Suarez<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grayso01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonny Gray\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bellobr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brayan Bello\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/oviedjo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johan Oviedo<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While they did lose some promising younger pitchers in the process, such as <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dobbihu01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter Dobbins <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fittsri01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard Fitts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there\u2019s still really promising depth in there. Even though the projected rotation doesn\u2019t include them at this moment, it\u2019s highly expected that top prospects <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tollepa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payton Tolle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/earlyco01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connelly Early<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will contribute a good amount this season. This also doesn\u2019t include the minor league depth that they have at pitchers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Where Will These Three Pitchers End Up?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, even with those seven, there are still some names that can contribute that are up in the air right now in terms of whether or not they\u2019ll have a spot with this current team. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crawfku01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kutter Crawford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/houckta01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanner Houck<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sandopa02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patrick Sandoval<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are all quality major league starters, with no clear path to break the rotation. So the question begs: what happens with these three?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Kutter Crawford<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crawford was drafted in 2017 out of Florida Gulf Coast. He came up to Boston around 2021, going back and forth between the starting rotation and the bullpen. He last pitched in 2024, which ended up being a disaster year for him. In 33 starts, he had a record of 9-16 while giving up an MLB-leading 34 home runs. In those 33 appearances, 23 of them <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/gl.fcgi?id=crawfku01&amp;t=p&amp;year=2024\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were starts in which he gave up multiple runs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unfortunately for him, he didn\u2019t get much run support in those losses. The Sox only scored three or more runs in two of their 16 losses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other than a disastrous 2024, he\u2019s a decent pitcher. And there\u2019s a possibility a role change could be beneficial for him. Looking <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/splits\/_\/id\/41277\/kutter-crawford\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at his splits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the more he sees a batter in the game, the more trouble he has. He has an OBA of .260 the third time through the order, compared to .218 through the second time. While the home run totals are higher the first two times, the average is higher the third time around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Crawford is currently recovering from wrist surgery, but he signed a one-year deal to avoid arbitration. His <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/kutter-crawford-676710?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five-pitch arsenal <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">includes a deadly split finger that has a .192 OBA and a 40.4 Whiff%. If he comes back from the injury with the same effect on his pitches, there might be a conversation to be had about moving him to the bullpen. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/gl.fcgi?id=crawfku01&amp;t=p&amp;year=2023\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he had eight bullpen appearances, five of which he allowed three hits or fewer. He was also able to notch two holds in those outings as well. They do have a surplus of righties in there, but he could definitely occupy a spot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"aligncenter\"><p class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 610px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBvoBB9P1D\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2149px; aspect-ratio: 2149\/1433;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p><\/p>\n<h3><b>Tanner Houck<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houck is definitely a tricky option. Debuting in 2020, he has been a below-average to average pitcher for the first few years of his career. Then came 2024, where Houck started really well with an 8-6 record, including a three-hit shutout against the Cleveland Guardians. This great start earned him an appearance in the All-Star Game, one of two Red Sox to be an All-Star that year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, after that, things started to spiral. Post All-Star break, he went 1-4 the rest of the season. His 2025 campaign wasn\u2019t much better. He only pitched in nine games before getting injured and requiring Tommy John surgery as a result, as 2025 was a career low for him. Houck became the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/tanner-houck-allows-11-runs-in-start-against-tigers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first pitcher in nearly two decades<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to have multiple starts of 11 or more earned runs against him. As of March 9th, he is on the 60-day IL and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/fantasy\/baseball\/news\/red-soxs-tanner-houck-eyeing-return-in-late-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expected to come back in September<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houck has<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/tanner-houck-656557?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> four pitches that he uses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, often relying on secondary pitches, as he uses his four-seamer the least of all four. In 2025, it was the sinker, and the sweeper in 2024. In a bigger sample size, his sweeper was actually his most effective in 2024. It had batters missing at a 30.2% rate (and 32.4% in 2025). Weirdly enough, the OBA is higher than the xOBA, or the expected batting average. For example, batters hit .305 against his sweeper this past season, but the xOBA was .279.\u00a0 So it could also just be bad luck for him. Either way, the hope is that post-injury, he can get back to his all-star form.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the return timetable post injury, the solution here would just be to let him recover and come back naturally. With the amount of pitching they do have now, they\u2019re not in desperate need of another. But who knows? Come September, due to an injury,\u00a0 disappointing performances, or a stellar rehab stint from him, Houck may see Major League time in the 2026 season. At the very least, he should be on the 40-man roster. After this season, decisions can be made about his future. But there shouldn\u2019t be a rush to get him back yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"aligncenter\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><p class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 610px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBGViEzv1G\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6240px; aspect-ratio: 6240\/4160;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Patrick Sandoval\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandoval came over from the Angels in the 2024 offseason, but has not pitched for the Red Sox yet due to his recovery process from a torn UCL in June 2024. Like Houck and Crawford, his previous season (2024 in his case) was not perfect by any means. He went 2-8 with an ERA of 5.08 in about 80 innings. His best year was in 2022, where he produced a 3.3 WAR and a 2.91 ERA, holding batters to a batting average of .246.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/patrick-sandoval-663776?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His pitch assortment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> includes a heavy use of a changeup and slider combo (28.3% and 24.7%, respectively). While his changeup was very good in 2024, it was actually his curve that batters struggled with the most. Going against his curve, batters only hit .118 against Sandoval. He\u2019s also got a whiff rate of 25% or higher on 3 different pitches:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curve: 27.9%\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweeper: 28.1%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changeup: 39%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While he won\u2019t be back for Opening Day, Sandoval is projected to come back the earliest out of these three. However, that might make getting a solid spot in the rotation hard. So that leaves two options: Boston can either test the left-hander out in the bullpen, which would fill a need for the time being. If that doesn\u2019t work, though, they might have to trade him. Cora\u2019s <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7076151\/2026\/03\/02\/red-sox-roster-projection-fifth-starter\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not open to a bigger rotation,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and he\u2019s in the mix of the next guy up with about four other pitchers. It seems like it won\u2019t work out here. Someone like the San Diego <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/padres\/onsi\/san-diego-padres-news\/predicting-padres-red-sox-blockbuster-trade-for-12-75-million-star\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Padres<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Colorado <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/red-sox\/onsi\/boston-red-sox-news\/red-sox-18m-trade-candidate-could-be-option-for-rockies-insider-jackson3\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rockies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be interested.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Red Sox in 2026 have plenty of pitching to go around, whether it\u2019s in the rotation, the minors, or the guys waiting in the wings. Crawford, Houck, and Sandoval are all similar in a way. They\u2019re all guys coming off injuries waiting to start contributing again.
