Major League Baseball first named an MVP in both the American and National Leagues in 1911. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides a small gap around the time of World War I, this exalted award has been given to one player in each league <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/mvp.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">since 1924<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1979.shtml#NL_MVP_voting_link\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two players<\/a> in one rare case<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you scan the list of all-time MVP winners, you will see tons of Hall of Famers and household names. However, you\u2019ll also notice some unfamiliar players. For every <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ruthba01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/a><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ruthba01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Babe Ruth<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bob O\u2019Farrell<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you throw out <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mantlmi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/a><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mantlmi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mickey Mantle<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is always <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/versazo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/a><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/versazo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zoilo Versalles<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aaronha01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/a><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aaronha01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hank Aaron<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won the award once, but <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bellge02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/a><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=bellge02,bellge01&amp;search=George+Bell&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Bell<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also has one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the legends get most of the fanfare, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">let\u2019s give a little love to some of the guys who don\u2019t have a place in Cooperstown<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here&#8217;s the conclusion to our brief two-part series discussing some of MLB\u2019s most obscure <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2023\/10\/20\/three-most-obscure-mvps\/\" target=\"_self\">MVPs<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Lightning in a Bottle: MLB&#8217;s Most Obscure MVPs (Part Two)<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Willie Hernandez (1984 American League MVP)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1984, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detroit Tigers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had a special season that included <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">104 wins and a World Series title, their most recent to date<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Journeyman reliever <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hernawi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willie Hernandez<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a huge contributor \u2026 winning both the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1984.shtml#all_AL_CYA_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/a>Cy Young Award<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1984.shtml#all_AL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AL MVP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He edged some guy named <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bondsba01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1991.shtml#all_NL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NL MVP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with league highs in hits (187), batting average (.319), and total bases (303). Who is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/caminke01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Caminiti<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?
