Some of MLB\u2019s Most Obscure MVPs (Part One)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be named the Most Valuable Player in any professional sport is probably the most prestigious individual honor an athlete can receive to validate their greatness. Major League Baseball first named an MVP in both the American and National League in 1911. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/mvp.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides a small gap around the time of World War I, this exalted award has been given to one player in each league since 1924<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1979.shtml#NL_MVP_voting_link\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or two players in one rare case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you scan the list of all-time MVP winners, you will see tons of Hall of Famers and household names. However, you\u2019ll also notice some unfamiliar players. For every <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ruthba01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babe Ruth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/o&#039;farbo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bob O\u2019Farrell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you throw out <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mantlmi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mickey Mantle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is always <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/versazo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoilo Varselles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aaronha01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hank Aaron<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won it once, but <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bellge02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">George Bell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also has one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the legends get most of the fanfare, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2023\/10\/20\/three-most-obscure-mvps\/\" target=\"_self\">let\u2019s give a little love to some of the guys who don\u2019t have a residence in Cooperstown<\/a>. We\u2019ll chronologically do this series in two sections. Here are some of MLB\u2019s most obscure MVPs \u2026 part one.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>George Burns (1926 American League MVP)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, we are not talking about the famous actor. In 1926, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/burnsge02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">George Burns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/CLE\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Indians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1926.shtml#all_AL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AL MVP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a stat line of 4 home runs, 115 RBIs, a .358 batting average, and a league-best 216 hits. His team didn\u2019t even win the AL pennant, but Burns did take home some personal hardware.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Frank McCormick<\/b> <b>(1940 National League MVP)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mccorfr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frank McCormick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> did have a very solid career, but since it was so long ago, his name probably isn\u2019t ringing a bell. He won the 1940 <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1940.shtml#all_NL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NL MVP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/CIN\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cincinnati Reds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and then his team won the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/postseason\/1940_WS.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Series<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This was one of three seasons McCormick led the league in hits, to go along with eight All-Star nods.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Jim Konstanty (1950 National League MVP)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an era predating specialty relief pitching, this relief pitcher miraculously won the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1950.shtml#all_NL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1950 NL MVP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the Whiz Kids. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/konstji01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jim Konstanty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finished 62 games with 22 saves for the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/PHI\/1950.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pennant-winning Philadelphia Phillies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To give you an idea of his impact and reliability, this righty delivered 152 innings without starting a single game.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Dick Groat (1960 National League MVP)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can a position player win the MVP by having only two home runs? Go ask <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/groatdi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dick Groat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because he did it in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1960.shtml#all_NL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1960<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/PIT\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pittsburgh Pirates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Power be gone, this light-hitting shortstop did lead the NL with a .325 batting average and 6.1 WAR for the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/PIT\/1960.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Champions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Jeff Burroughs<\/b> <b>(1974 American League MVP)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/burroje01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff Burroughs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> definitely benefited from four Oakland Athletics teammates stealing votes from each other. Yet this guy did pull home the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1974.shtml#all_AL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1974 AL MVP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trophy.
