Nolan McLean<\/a> picked up right where he left off.<\/p>\n

After emerging as a late-season spark in 2025 and helping keep the Mets afloat down the stretch, McLean entered 2026 with expectations of fronting the rotation. The offseason acquisition of Freddy Peralta<\/span><\/span> <\/a>may have shifted the spotlight slightly, but it could ultimately benefit the young right-hander \u2014 giving him breathing room and less pressure as he settles into what the Mets hope is his first full season as a cornerstone arm.<\/p>\n

On Friday afternoon, McLean made his Spring Training debut and looked every bit the part. The right-hander spun four innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six. His sinker topped 98 mph, flashing the electric velocity that made him must-watch last season.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt felt good to go out there and compete against some other jerseys,\u201d McLean said following the outing.<\/p>\n

While Spring Training results always come with a grain of salt, the crisp command and overpowering stuff were encouraging signs for a pitcher expected to take another step forward.<\/p>\n

The Mets\u2019 projected rotation features Peralta, Clay Holmes<\/a> \u2014 the former reliever turned starter \u2014 and David Peterson<\/a>, along with hopeful returns from Kodai Senga<\/a> and Sean Manaea<\/a>. But manager Carlos Mendoza<\/span><\/span> has made it clear that McLean will play a significant role.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s built different,\u201d Mendoza said. \u201cI don\u2019t think any moment is too big for him, or any stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Next up for McLean is the World Baseball Classic, which begins March 6. The young right-hander has earned a role with Team USA, adding another high-profile opportunity before Opening Day.<\/p>\n
