If you ask long-time fans to name the last above-average regular, you\u2019ll likely hear the name <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sizemgr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-26_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grady Sizemore<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re under 30, Sizemore played for Cleveland from 2004 to 2011, with his last productive season coming in 2008 due to injury. That\u2019s how long the position has been a problem spot\u2014nearly two decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So this spring, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/11\/11\/stephen-vogt-pat-murphy-2025-mlb-manager-of-the-year-awards\/\" target=\"_self\">manager<\/a> <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/vogtst01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephen Vogt<\/a> is trying something different. He announced that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kwanst01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-26_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steven Kwan<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Guardians\u2019 four-time Gold Glove left fielder, will get reps in center field during spring training. Kwan was the best defensive outfielder in baseball last year, according to DRS\u2014Defensive Runs Saved. He saved a total of 22 runs, which tied him for the top spot at any position in all of Major League Baseball.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: 610px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBwxL1j4v4\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3000px; aspect-ratio: 3000\/2091;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h2>Guardians Trying Outfield Shuffle with Kwan in Center<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On paper, the Guardians&#8217; outfield has some flexibility, but not much thump offensively. Last year, Cleveland\u2019s center fielders posted a .199 average and a .574 OPS. Right field wasn\u2019t much better. The team cycled through five different starters in center: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=martin015ang,martin016ang&amp;search=Angel+Martinez&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-26_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Angel Martinez<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (87 starts led the team), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thomala02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-26_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lane Thomas<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jonesno01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-26_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nolan Jones<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schneda04.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-26_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Schneemann<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/halpipe01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-26_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Petey Halpin<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brennwi02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-26_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Will Brennan<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Kwan also made appearances at the position\u2014Kwan in just one game.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">New development: Steven Kwan will play some center field this spring, as the Guardians try to sort out their best outfield alignment. Outside of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/faircst01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-26_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stuart Fairchild<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (on a minor league deal), there are no new faces pushing for starting jobs in the outfield. That means the club needs to get creative with the pieces they have.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Pros and Cons<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sliding Kwan into center\u2014even occasionally\u2014lets the Guardians put their three most talented young outfielders in the lineup at the same time. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/delauch01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-26_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chase DeLauter<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/valerge01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/a><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/valerge01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-26_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Valera<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cover the corners, especially against righties. It also spares DeLauter, who has significant injury concerns, from the physical grind of center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s another angle, too: Kwan in center field boosts his trade value. In a league where only ten center fielders posted a wRC+ over 100 last year (led by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/buxtoby01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-26_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Byron Buxton<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a league-average bat with elite defense in center is a rarity.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/robparkerMLBbro?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@robparkerMLBbro<\/a> ranks Byron Buxton as his No. 1 Center Fielder Right Now \ud83d\udcaa<a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Top10RightNow?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#Top10RightNow<\/a> <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5nnZtjbtbY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/5nnZtjbtbY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 MLB Now (@MLBNow) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MLBNow\/status\/2017425350830244351?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">January 31, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there\u2019s a catch. Center field is a much more demanding position than left, and Kwan appeared to wear down as 2025 moved along. By season\u2019s end, his 99 wRC+ was just below league average. If Kwan wore down playing left field, what happens if he plays a more mentally and physically demanding outfield spot?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there\u2019s the question of defense. Kwan has played just six games in center at the big league level, though he has experience there in the minors and college. Gold Gloves in left don\u2019t automatically translate to center, and moving a player off a position where he\u2019s elite comes with risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Last Word<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line is that the Guardians need more from their outfield if they\u2019re going to contend in an improved AL Central. Halpin is a great defender, but hasn\u2019t shown enough with the bat yet. Jones has a big arm, but has underachieved at the plate. Maybe Fairchild emerges as a surprise contributor? In the corners, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fryda01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-26_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Fry<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kayfucj01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-26_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C.J. The options are there; it\u2019s just a matter of who will actually produce.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center field remains one of baseball\u2019s hardest positions to fill, and the Guardians know it as well as anyone. If Kwan can handle it even part-time, it gives the team more options. If not, well, the search for the next Sizemore continues.
