Looking at the projected Opening Day roster, there are a lot of right-handers to provide help, including <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/whitlga01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garrett Whitlock <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/slateju01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justin Slaten<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are also intriguing prospects such as <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=keller000kyl\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyle Keller<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, when looking at the left-handers, aside from American League Reliever of the Year <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chapmar01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aroldis Chapman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there\u2019s some concern to be had. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/moranjo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jovani Moran<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appeared in two games in 2025 after missing the entire 2024 season with Tommy John surgery. Then there\u2019s <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=samani000tyl\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler Samaniego<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who\u2019s yet to make an appearance in Triple-A, let alone the major leagues. Let&#8217;s go through the several approaches that Boston could go with here.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Where the Red Sox Could Turn for Left-Handed Bullpen Help<\/h2>\n<h3><b>In-House Relief Options<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on certain moves this offseason, it\u2019s fair to assume that some issues can be solved in-house or in the farm system. So let\u2019s apply that to this situation. While there are certainly more right-handed options than southpaws, a few lefties could be looked at.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>TJ Sikkema\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=sikkem000tj-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TJ Sikkema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a prospect for the New York Yankees when he was traded to the Kansas City Royals for former Red Sox outfielder <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/beninan01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Benintendi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He was later released in 2023 and drafted by Cincinnati in the Rule 5 Draft. This offseason, he signed a minor-league deal with the Red Sox. He split time between the rotation and bullpen last season in Double &amp; Triple A with Cincinnati\u2019s affiliates. Between those teams, he went 8-4 with a 4.57 ERA. There are some concerns, such as his high WHIP of 1.258 and his ERA.\u00a0 But with time, he could contribute later down the line.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Jeremy Wu-Yelland<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=wu-yel000jer\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeremy Wu-Yelland <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was drafted by the Red Sox in 2020 and got called up to Double-A this past season. He went 2-0 in Portland in 18 appearances, only walking 11 of the 138 batters he faced. In addition, he held opposing batters to a .198 average. The former starter turned bullpen pitcher got a non-roster invite to spring training this year. He throws a mix of four pitches, but his standout is <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/determined-red-sox-prospect-up-to-98-mph-with-electric-fastball-had-37-k-rate-193-baa-at-aa.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his 98 MPH fastball<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He also favors his cutter. Despite not reaching Worcester yet, the fact that he got invited to spring training is a sign that he shows real promise. If not by Opening Day, Wu-Yelland should be expected to make his debut at some point this season\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Payton Tolle<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tollepa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payton Tolle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a top 100 prospect who <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/09\/17\/red-sox-make-rotation-tweaks-10-games-left\/\" target=\"_self\">debuted last season<\/a>. And while Tolle and fellow prospect <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/earlyco01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connelly Early<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were rumored to be in trade talks for big bats like <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/marteke01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ketel Marte <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hoernni01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nico Hoerner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both ultimately stayed put. With a stacked rotation this year, it will be hard to imagine a point this season where both Tolle and Early start (barring any injuries, of course). If there were questions about <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/oviedjo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johan Oviedo<\/a>, Early would probably be the choice to replace him, meaning Tolle would be sent to the bullpen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Payton Tolle suiting up <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aTboM7oMjP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/aTboM7oMjP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Matthew Crory (@matthewcrory) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/matthewcrory\/status\/2021983317676241357?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">February 12, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the regular season, four of his seven appearances were out of the bullpen. While his WHIP was worse than Sikkema\u2019s at 1.592, he was a rookie adjusting to the major league level last year. There\u2019s still a lot of potential to be seen, and maybe small sample sizes in the bullpen will help him. It is unlikely that either Tolle or Early will be moved to the bullpen, but it\u2019s still a possibility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Free Agents\/Possible Trade Pieces<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s always the alternative route of acquiring free agents or players that won\u2019t crack the 40-man roster as well. In terms of free agents, pitchers such as Danny Coulombe and Jalen Beeks are searching for major league contracts. Due to Boston\u2019s 40-man roster stretching a bit thin, there may be some reluctance to do this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the options of fringe roster pitchers <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2026\/02\/red-sox-interested-in-left-handed-bullpen-depth.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seem to be endless right now<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There\u2019s a good chance that these guys will be optioned to Triple-A in their respective franchises. But it wouldn\u2019t hurt for the Red Sox to check in on any of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Genesis Cabrera\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cabrege01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genesis Cabrera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a veteran pitcher who was traded several times last year, playing for four teams. This spring, he&#8217;s with the Philadelphia Phillies, looking for a roster spot. His 2025 season was all over the place, not faring well with any team. It\u2019s better to look at his 2024 campaign, which he spent with the Toronto Blue Jays. In 69 appearances out of the bullpen, he had an ERA of 3.59 in almost 63 innings. While his advanced metrics don\u2019t pop out on paper (.268 OBA and 18.5 K%), he could be seen as a stable one-inning guy when needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In terms of where he fits in with Philadelphia, their rotation and bullpen at the major league level are loaded. Their rotation is among the best in the league. This is important to note, because their second-best prospect is a pitcher who could debut this year in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=painte001and\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Painter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning either Cabrera or <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/walketa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taijuan Walker<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gets moved to an already elite bullpen. There\u2019s no clear path for Cabrera, leaving him as a viable option for Boston to add.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Tyler Gilbert\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilbety01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler Gilbert<\/span><\/a> of the Chicago White Sox is<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0probably the most likely of these three to remain with their team. But with the additions of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hicksjo03.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jordan Hicks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dominse01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seranthony Dominguez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s not so certain. This isn\u2019t even including the pairing of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=schult000noa\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noah Schultz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=smith-000hag\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hagen Smith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> waiting in the minors. Gilbert would be a nice acquisition for Boston. On the surface, he may seem like a typical run-of-the-mill pitcher, boasting a 3.88 ERA through 51 innings to go with 49 strikeouts in the White Sox system. But the advanced metrics really give insight. He holds opponents to a .215 batting average and strikes out 22.8% of batters he\u2019s faced. He is on the older side at 32, but he would definitely be a valuable pickup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>JoJo Romero<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/romerjo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JoJo Romero<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a reliever looking to get a spot on the St. Louis Cardinals roster this season. He&#8217;s also trying to improve his value in a contract year. Currently, he\u2019s the second option for the closer role in St. Louis, behind the injured <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/obrieri01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riley O\u2019Brien<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Romero finished last year with a 2.07 ERA and an OBA of .217. It wouldn\u2019t be crazy for St. Louis to hold onto him, as their bullpen arms are iffy, and he could be a premier arm there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the Cardinals have been trending towards trading expiring contracts and building towards the future. More importantly, Cardinals GM Chaim Bloom has done two trades with the Red Sox. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grayso01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonny Gray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/contrwi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willson Contreras<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/12\/21\/cardinals-trade-wilson-contreras-red-sox\/\" target=\"_self\">traded<\/a> for a surplus of pitching, including promising prospect <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=clarke001bra\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brandon Clarke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 It\u2019d be a stretch to find a reason to let a guy like Romero go, but should he be on the market, Boston should make a push.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Verdict<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these pitchers are good in their own right. However, if the Red Sox were to get two or three pitchers this next month, it would probably be a mix. If Tolle is chosen to be in the bullpen, he\u2019d take one of those spots, but the assumption is neither him or Early will go to the bullpen. So the best bullpen options for the Red Sox could be:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeremy Wu-Yelland<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JoJo Romero<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler Gilbert<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yu-Welland is in camp right now and progressing in the right direction, so bringing him up wouldn\u2019t cost anything.
