Now, legit or not, every fanbase needs reasons to be excited at the start of the baseball season. Some teams are easier to come up with reasons than others, but we are going to come up with at least one totally sincere reason for each team to be excited heading into the 2026 MLB season. This is \u2026 hope springs eternal \u2026 National League East edition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Reasons for Optimism: NL East<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Atlanta Braves: Better Health<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/ATL\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlanta Braves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were not healthy in 2025 when they finished 76-86. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/acunaro01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ronald Acuna Jr.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murphse01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sean Murphy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rileyau01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Riley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all played in 102 games or fewer. When healthy, all of those guys are top-five players at their position. On the mound, out of their top three starters, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/salech01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Sale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stridsp01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spencer Strider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schwesp01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spencer Schwellenbach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, none of them made more than 23 starts. Both Acuna and Strider were also recovering from major injuries from the previous year, so their production almost has to improve. The nucleus of the ultra-talented Braves teams that <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/ATL\/2021.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won a World Series<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and six consecutive NL East crowns is alive and well. Yes, the National League East is very top-heavy, but if Atlanta is even fractionally healthier than last year, Braves fans have a reason for optimism.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Miami Marlins: A Trade is Looming<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/FLA\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miami Marlins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fans don\u2019t want to hear about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/12\/27\/marlins-open-to-trading-ace-sandy-alcantara\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another potential star being traded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but that is a reason for them to be excited in 2026. Former Cy Young winner <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alcansa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandy Alcantara<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who had a down year in 2025, his first off of Tommy John Surgery, went at least seven innings in 7 of his last 12 starts and showed glimpses of his former <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2022.shtml#all_NL_CYA_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cy Young<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> self. Still on a team-friendly deal, if Sandy has a good first half, he will be the big fish, pun intended, that many contenders would like to catch. And \u2026 he would bring back a major haul to an up-and-coming Marlins team to pair with young talents <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/edwarxa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xavier Edwards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lopezot01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otto Lopez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stoweky01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyle Stowers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That could significantly expedite the perpetual rebuild in Miami, and that is a reason for optimism for Miami fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>New York Mets: Major Overhauls<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, the payroll-heavy <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/NYM\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Mets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> collapsed and missed the playoffs after a hot first few months. The brass decided to make some big moves. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alonspe01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pete Alonso<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/diazed04.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edwin Diaz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nimmobr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brandon Nimmo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcneije01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff McNeil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are gone. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bichebo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bo Bichette<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/peralfr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freddy Peralta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/roberlu01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luis Robert<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/semiema01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcus Semien<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willide03.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Devin Williams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are now in the Big Apple. Will this make the Mets a more viable threat in the NL East? Many pundits seem to think so. At the very least, the Mets executives looked at last year\u2019s colossal disappointment and made some significant changes. These major overhauls offer optimism for New York fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Philadelphia Phillies: A Fortified Bullpen<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike their Northern rival, the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/PHI\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philadelphia Phillies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> didn\u2019t make any major roster overhauls, even though their team has won consecutive NL East titles. Fans and Philadelphia sports talk pontificators have been bemoaning this all off-season. However, one area where the Fightins are undoubtedly better is their bullpen. They will have a full season of lights-out closer <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranjh01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jhoan Duran<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a presumably healthy and drug-free <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alvarjo03.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jose Alvarado<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, free-agent righty <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kellebr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brad Keller<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and underrated lefty <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/banksta01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanner Banks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is very ironic that if Jose Alvarado hadn\u2019t been suspended last year, the Phils most likely wouldn\u2019t have ever traded for Duran. Now, the two of them create a very formidable back end to supplement a starting rotation that is one of MLB\u2019s best. Philadelphians love to air their grievances, but a fortified bullpen is a reason for optimism for Phils fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Washington Nationals: Their Franchise Guy<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/WSN\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Nationals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are in a rebuild mode, but they already have a foundational franchise player: <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/woodja03.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Wood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Part of the Juan Soto deal in 2022, this tall and slender lefty bat had <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/allstar\/2025-allstar-game.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an All-Star season in 2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 31 homers, 94 ribbies, 38 doubles, and an .825 OPS. Yes, he has to cut down on those league-leading 221 strikeouts, but he is only 23 years old. If <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/abramcj01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CJ Abrams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crewsdy01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dylan Crews<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=butera000bla\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a manager who has trouble getting into rated-R movies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can grow with Wood, the Nationals have a bright future.
