On Wednesday night, they signed <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kineris01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isiah Kiner-Falefa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an infielder who split time with Pittsburgh and Toronto in 2025. While the infielder didn\u2019t play much with the eventual American League champions, he did spend significant time with the Pirates, mostly at shortstop. In fact, most of his career has been on the left side of the infield or at catcher, where he played his first couple of years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why Sign IKF?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston\u2019s intention of signing him was definitely to fill the infield. While the experience at third helps, they might have their eyes set on <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mayerma01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcelo Mayer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being the full-time third baseman. That leaves second base, a spot that has caused several discussions this offseason.\u00a0 This is because there have been several options, but not a solid one in the eyes of the fanbase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of who his competition is, Finer-Kelefa will be going up against <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hamilda03.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Hamilton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gonzaro01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romy Gonzalez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and former coveted prospect <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/campbkr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristian Campbell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Hamilton and Gonzalez have their advantages, and Campbell\u2019s status on this roster is up in the air after his hot start turned into a slide, eventually sending him back to Worcester.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Strengths<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for how Kiner-Falefa compares, defensively, he has the clear advantage. He\u2019s the only one of the four who has a Gold Glove in his career. And while second base may not be his natural position, he played 26 innings there in Toronto this season. While playing there, he had a perfect fielding percentage of 1.000. If that\u2019s not enough, due to the small sample size, he played 376 innings at second in 2024. Splitting time between Toronto and Pittsburgh that year, he only had two errors out of 194 chances. That&#8217;s a fielding percentage of .990. In fact, in his career at second base, he\u2019s got a .987 to go along with 12 Defensive Runs Saved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"aligncenter\"><p class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 610px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOB8OFy0NL3\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3365px; aspect-ratio: 3365\/2244;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p><\/p>\n<h2><b>Weaknesses<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While he is a stellar defender, his offensive output is a bit of a downside. He hit .264 this year and isn\u2019t significantly better at getting on base. This lacks in comparison with the competition at his position currently. Granted, Kiner-Falefa has 42 games more than the closest to him in Gonzalez, but Gonzalez has him beat on OBP by .46 (.343 compared to .297).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking at the advanced metrics, it shows that Kiner-Falefa is in the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/isiah-kiner-falefa-643396?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">91st percentile when it comes to Whiff%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This puts him just <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/leaderboard\/custom?year=2025&amp;type=batter&amp;filter=&amp;min=400&amp;selections=pa%2Ck_percent%2Cbb_percent%2Cxba%2Cwoba%2Cxwoba%2Csweet_spot_percent%2Cbarrel_batted_rate%2Chard_hit_percent%2Cavg_best_speed%2Cavg_hyper_speed%2Cwhiff_percent%2Cswing_percent&amp;chart=false&amp;x=pa&amp;y=pa&amp;r=no&amp;chartType=beeswarm&amp;sort=whiff_percent&amp;sortDir=asc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outside the top 20 in batters who had 400+ a<\/span><\/a>t-bats<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The problem comes when looking at the Chase%. He shows up at the 22nd percentile, at 32.1%. Even worse, his BB% ranks in the 2nd percentile, ranking in the<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/leaderboard\/custom?year=2025&amp;type=batter&amp;filter=&amp;min=400&amp;selections=pa%2Ck_percent%2Cbb_percent%2Cxba%2Cwoba%2Cxwoba%2Csweet_spot_percent%2Cbarrel_batted_rate%2Chard_hit_percent%2Cavg_best_speed%2Cavg_hyper_speed%2Cwhiff_percent%2Cswing_percent&amp;chart=false&amp;x=pa&amp;y=pa&amp;r=no&amp;chartType=beeswarm&amp;sort=bb_percent&amp;sortDir=asc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bottom five of all hitters with the same amount of qualified a<\/span><\/a>t-bats<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Verdict: Is This Good?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it\u2019s clear that Kiner-Falefa wasn\u2019t the first option for Boston, he\u2019s not a bad signing at all. The signing was cheap at $6 million for 1 year; it grants more options in the infield (can test him at second <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">third), and he\u2019s a Gold Glove winner. Despite his offensive struggles, this is a decent pickup. The key would just be to pair him with Gonzalez. Hamilton can pinch-run in late-game situations.
