What could this middle-aged baseball writer be referencing? In Major League Baseball history, only two players have won the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in the same season. Those two men are <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lynnfr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fred Lynn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1975 and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/suzukic01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ichiro Suzuki<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2001.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/mvp.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MLB first started naming an American League and National League MVP back in 1911<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The exceptions are 1915-1921 (no MVPs named) and 1922-1923 (only one named for both leagues). This is probably the most prestigious individual award to receive in baseball. A bit further down that list is the ROY award. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/roy.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first one was given in 1947<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to none other than civil rights pioneer <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/robinja02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jackie Robinson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it now bears his name. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/br-blog\/2023\/07\/players-who-won-rookie-of-the-year-and-mvp\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several Major Leaguers have won both of these honors in their career<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but only two players have done it in the same season. Fred Lynn and Ichiro Suzuki, here is your table for two.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>First to the Table<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lynn was originally drafted by the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/NYY\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Yankees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/draft\/index.fcgi?year_ID=1970&amp;draft_round=3&amp;draft_type=junreg&amp;query_type=year_round\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1970<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before heading to the University of Southern California for three years. Then, in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/draft\/index.fcgi?year_ID=1973&amp;draft_round=2&amp;draft_type=junreg&amp;query_type=year_round\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1973,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he was drafted by the rival <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/BOS\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston Red Sox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This lefty center fielder came up at the end of the \u201874 season but retained his rookie status for 1975. For all in New England, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/BOS\/1975.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that became a special year for their Sox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lynn was the starter in center on opening day for the eventual pennant winners. His traditional power numbers were decent: 21 home runs and 105 RBIs. However, his other stats were much gaudier and justify his dual-award seasons. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leaders\/WAR_top_ten.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He had a 7.4 WAR, which was only behind one other position player in the American League<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leaders\/batting_avg_top_ten.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then he posted a .331 batting average, good for fourth in the AL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Besides that, he led the Junior Circuit in runs (103), doubles (47), a .566 slugging %, and a .967 OPS. You can tack on a Gold Glove for traversing the uniquely dimensioned Fenway outfield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Californian did this all for a team that won the AL East by 4.5 games before vanquishing the Oakland Athletics dynasty in the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/postseason\/1975_ALCS.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ALCS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We all know about that epic <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/postseason\/1975_WS.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1975 Fall Classic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so we won\u2019t relive that for the fans in Beantown. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1975.shtml#all_AL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AL MVP vote really wasn\u2019t that close<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1975.shtml#all_AL_ROY_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the AL ROY race was a landslide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This banner year made Lynn the first player ever to capture the MVP and Rookie of the Year in the same season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"aligncenter\"><p class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 610px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"6dfbdbe8ed6ff2eb8f8e8ee3c2cef8f4\" image-id=\"wennWaphdG1c\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2396px; aspect-ratio: 2396\/3600;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p><\/p>\n<h2><b>A Second Reservation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suzuki\u2019s dynamic 2001 season was the much-anticipated MLB debut of an already established Japanese star. He led the AL in hits (242), batting average (.350), stolen bases (56), and at-bats (692). Like the only other diner at this table, Suzuki also won a Gold Glove. Who could ever forget that laser-beam throw at Oakland early in that year? On top of that, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/most-mlb-wins-in-a-season-c289159676\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his Seattle Mariners tied a league record with 116 victories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His immediate impact showed that Japan\u2019s best position players could excel in MLB. Up until that point, it was mainly Japanese pitchers who came to America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now \u2026 the argument of whether Ichiro should have qualified as a genuine rookie is a whole other article, but he easily won the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2001.shtml#all_AL_ROY_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ROY<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sabatc.01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CC Sabathia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He won the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2001.shtml#all_AL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AL MVP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a much closer margin over <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/giambja01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jason Giambi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This made the lefty bat wizard only the second and most recent player to win the MVP and Rookie of the Year in the same season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This magical season marked the first of 10 consecutive 200-hit\/.300-average years for this contact specialist. In <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leaders\/H_season.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2004<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he set the single-season record for hits (262). After a brilliant 19-season career, Suzuki became the first Japanese-born player to be elected to the Hall of Fame in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/hof_2025.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"aligncenter\"><p class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 610px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOB7QYUnvNj\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 1798px; aspect-ratio: 1798\/3000;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p><\/p>\n<h2><b>Will We Get a Third?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is very hard to prognosticate because you never know how a rookie is going to perform. Plus, for a rookie to perform at an MVP-level is extremely rare. Some recent stars that came close were <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pujolal01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Albert Pujols<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2001.shtml#all_NL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2001<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/troutmi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mike Trout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2012.shtml#all_AL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2012<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/judgeaa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aaron Judge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2017.shtml#all_AL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alonspe01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pete Alonso<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2019.shtml#all_NL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Actually, last season <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kurtzni01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nick Kurtz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gave it a decent run with an <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2025.shtml#all_AL_ROY_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AL ROY<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2025.shtml#all_AL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12th-place AL MVP finish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. My guess is it will happen again because some of the college players entering MLB are uber-talented and have tons of premium experience at a young age.
