He is the top selection by the Yankees and holds that spot for a reason. Melendez is a catcher from Venezuela.

His overall tools and profile excite the evaluators on both ends of his game. Melendez has a bat that’s very workable, from a contact and power standpoint. His swing is fluent, with a violent hack of bat speed, and he gets the barrel through the zone.

Melendez’s hittable traits make him a valuable pick, given his projection and potential as an offensive catcher. The Venezuelan prospect is also very proven defensively, with good fundamentals behind the dish.

Arbrahan Pichardo

He’s ranked the Yankees’ second-best pick in this international signing period; the team selected two shortstops in this class.

Pichardo shows a strong bat with good bat speed and raw power. He’s not the biggest of bodies, but his athleticism and strength stand out. The ball jumps off his bat, using the barrel and keeping his hands in.

Pichardo displays very well in the hole at shortstop. His hands are smooth, with his feet moving well below him. Pichardo moves well, picks up the ball, and follows his aggressive throw over the diamond.

Germayhoni Beltre

From the Dominican Republic, Beltre represents the other shortstop signing by the Yankees. He’s confirmed to have signed a $100,000 contract. Beltre has a ceiling for projection, but it may be lower than others’.

He shows strong tools like the other prospects. Belte has a quick bat speed and power, but there is more in the tank to unleash. His defense is also above satisfactory and projectable.

The shortstop is strong on his feet, moves well, covers ground, and can explode in movement. His overall footwork needs work.
