Breaking a guitar to impress a senior member won\u2019t even work. The only way you can get into this elite clique is with numbers \u2026 milestone numbers. This is MLB\u2019s 3,000-hit\/500-home run club: one of the hardest clubs in all of sports to secure a membership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leaders\/H_career.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3,000 hits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leaders\/HR_career.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">500 home runs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are benchmark stats in baseball. To achieve one usually makes you a Hall of Famer, but to achieve both is borderline baseball immortality. Only seven players in MLB history have entered this exclusive pantheon. An all-around player, this MLB career leader in home runs for over 30 years had 20+ long balls in 20 of his 23 MLB seasons. Yet, he never hit more than 47 in any year. This consistent slugger for mostly the Milwaukee\/Atlanta Braves and later the Milwaukee Brewers also won two batting titles and registered 12 top-9 or better MVP results, including the top prize in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1957.shtml#all_NL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1957<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition to being a 12-time Gold Glove winner, the Say Hey Kid slammed 660 homers out of his 3,293 career hits to the tune of a .301 career batting average. When you combine that with 24 All-Star nods, 4 home-run crowns, 2 National League MVPs, a Rookie of the Year, an NL batting title, and a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/NYG\/1954.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Series title<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the greatest player of all time discussion makes a lot of sense for <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mayswi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-01-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willie Mays<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did I mention he also made maybe the most famous catch ever<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gjQQL9uhAYM?si=QXVNVo9_UPZrOsJK\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murraed02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><\/b><\/a><b>Eddie Murray<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I actually caught a foul ball off the bat of this <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/hof_2003.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hall of Famer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but that is neither here nor there. <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=murraed02,murray005edd&amp;search=Eddie+Murray&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-01-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eddie Murray<\/a> was very sneakily and steadily one of the best hitters in baseball for almost 20 years. This dude hit .323 at the age of 39 in 1995. His best years came with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2022\/02\/21\/orioles-all-time-team-tournament\/\" target=\"_self\">Baltimore Orioles<\/a>, including winning the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1977.shtml#all_AL_ROY_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1977 AL ROY<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/postseason\/1983_WS.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1983 Fall Classic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. From 1978 to 1985, he never finished lower than 11th in MVP voting. 504 career dingers, 3,255 hits, and seven years of hitting .300+ gets you a lot of free dinners. Scan many of the all-time hitting stats, and you\u2019ll find this switch-hitter\u2019s name often.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/palmera01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><\/b><\/a><b>Rafael Palmeiro<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, controversy surrounds this man, but we\u2019re just looking at numbers. <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/palmera01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-01-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rafael Palmeiro<\/a> had 3,020 career knocks, and 569 of them were home runs. A lefty first baseman who had stints with the Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers (twice), and Orioles (twice), he had 10 years with 30+ homers and 100+ ribbies. He also led the American League in hits in 1990. Another cigar for this Cuban is 585 career doubles (<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leaders\/2B_career.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21st all-time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Because of his circumstances, Palmeiro may be dismissed at times, but you cannot dismiss that he is a member of one elite club.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rodrial01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><\/b><\/a><b>Alex Rodriguez<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A-Rod is no less controversial than the previous name mentioned, but his talent was undeniable. That talent helped him to 696 home runs, 3,115 hits, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/mvp.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three AL MVPs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two Gold Gloves, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1998.shtml#all_AL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 40\/40 season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/NYY\/2009.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a World Series title<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He was a very productive player for the Seattle Mariners, Rangers, and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2023\/10\/23\/rodriguez-number-retirement\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Yankees<\/a>. His WAR numbers are really gaudy: a career mark of 117.4 (<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leaders\/WAR_bat_career.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12th all-time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) with eight seasons of 8.3+ WAR. It remains to be seen whether the HOF voters will put <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=rodrial01,rodrig054ale,rodrig059ale,rodrig047ale,rodrig061ale,rodrig023ale,rodrig040ale,rodrig068ale,rodrig066ale,rodrig031ale&amp;search=Alex+Rodriguez&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-01-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Rodriguez<\/a> in Cooperstown. However, he can always claim he is part of a more exclusive club.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pujolal01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><\/b><\/a><b>Albert Pujols<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re nicknamed The Machine, you can produce 703 homers, 3,384 hits, 2,218 RBI (<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leaders\/RBI_career.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second all-time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and three MVPs (with 4 runner-ups). In MLB history, <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pujolal01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-01-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Albert Pujols<\/a> and Hank Aaron are the only members of the 3,000\/700 club; that\u2019s like getting into Studio 54. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyway, he led the <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leaders\/WAR_bat_leagues.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NL in WAR<\/a> from 2005 to 2010<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most of his damage was as a Cardinal and an Angel. Just to give you a taste of his artistry, Albert slugged .600+ in seven of his first nine seasons. Cabrera posted 3,174 hits, 512 homers, four batting titles, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/triple_crowns.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first Triple Crown since 1967<\/span><\/a>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As a 20-year-old Florida Marlin, this Venezuelan <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/boxes\/FLO\/FLO200310220.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hit a World Series home run<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> off of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/clemero02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/a><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/clemero02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-01-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roger Clemens<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Known for being a master of the strike zone, Cabrera had 11 years with a .300+ batting average and six years with a .400+ OBP. Like Pujols, the bouncer will let <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cabremi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-01-22_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miguel Cabrera<\/a> in the Hall whenever he is eligible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Who\u2019s Next?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because this fraternity is so elite, it is hard to project who could possibly be next to enter this select group.
