The Bronx Bombers acquired left-handed pitcher <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/01\/15\/new-grips-and-better-health-ryan-weathers-outlines-his-plan-for-success\/\" target=\"_self\">Ryan Weathers<\/a> from the Miami Marlins. This is a big move for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/01\/14\/what-is-next-for-the-yankees-after-adding-weathers\/\" target=\"_self\">rotation.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Yankees made a major addition to the rotation, as we figured they would. The club made it clear that the rotation was a priority, amongst other concerns on the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/01\/11\/mlb-rumor-roundup-bregmans-blockbuster-bellingers-impasse-and-the-spring-training-countdown\/\" target=\"_self\">to-do list.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what did the deal look like? In exchange for Weathers, the Yankees sent over four notable prospects. Going to Little Havana are outfielders Brendan Jones and Dillon Lewis. They also sent over infielders Dylan Jasso and Juan Matheus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three of these prospects were ranked on the Yankees&#8217; top 30 prospects. Jasso was ranked number 23, Jones at number 15, and Lewis at number 16. This five-player trade was the perfect deal to equip the Yankees&#8217; rotation to compete in the American League East.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"RYAN WEATHERS 2025 HIGHLIGHTS (NEW YANKEE SP\/RP)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0AyYIz14grg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Background and Profile on Ryan Weathers\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weathers was a first-round draft pick back in 2018. He was selected seventh overall out of high school by the San Diego Padres. He has five years in the Major Leagues; three in San Diego and two in Miami.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weathers is a high-leverage starting pitcher, drafted with value, but he does hold some downfalls and concerns. These concerns are mainly injuries and workload.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The left-handed pitcher was injury-prone recently.\u00a0 Weathers only started eight games in 2025 and 16 games in 2024, for a total of 24 games in the past two seasons. He offered 38 1 \/ 3 innings in 2025 and 86 2\/3 innings in 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The former Marlins starting pitcher battled injuries that included his forearm, lat, and finger strains. This kept him sidelined on-and-off. As he was inactive for a bit, Weathers struggled with some command issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weathers\u2019 durability and workload will need to be focused on by the Yankees&#8217; training staff and pitching coaches. Other than these concerns, his overall pitching profile is quite impressive, and will be important when in the rotation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Player Analysis Report<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 6\u20191\u201d, 230 lbs left-handed starter, Weathers, is durable, displaying strength and a loose arm. He comes with repeated mechanics, and works very well from the full. He\u2019s overall loose with a good wind and delivery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weathers has <a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/ryan-weathers-677960?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">five pitch options,<\/a> but primarily utilizes three of them. He works a four-seam fastball, changeup, sweeper, sinker, and slider. The sinker and slider recorded only 3.6% to 3.9% of his pitch usage in 2025, respectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fastball works upper 90s, sitting consistently around the 95-97 mph range. This is not a put-away pitch. His fastball needs to be located well to stay safe in the game. His overall command needs work and attention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The changeup and sweeper are both in the 20% put-away range, making both of these his potential out-pitches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weathers can be effective if he\u2019s ahead in the count. He needs to stay in command of the zone and the match-up, or his fastball gets taken advantage of in vulnerable spots.
