In 2006, the Big Piece won the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2006.shtml#all_NL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National League MVP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these-are-pretty-nuts<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stats. Howard edged out <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pujolal01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Albert Pujols<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a rare case of a playoff-team MVP candidate losing out to a non-playoff-team MVP candidate. Pujols did get a nice consolation prize when the Cardinals won the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/postseason\/2006_WS.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2006 World Series<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Let\u2019s take a closer look by the numbers at Howard\u2019s historic year to help celebrate its 20th anniversary. This will be an enjoyable time-machine trip for the fans in South Philadelphia, so grab a peanut butter Kandy Kake.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>#6\u2019s Origin Story<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This lefty first baseman was a 2001 fifth-rounder of the Phils out of Missouri State. He broke out in the 2004 minor league season with 46 home runs, 131 RBIs, and a 1.017 OPS. The problem for this St. Louis native was that the Phillies had <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thomeji01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Thome<\/a> anchoring first base for them. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com\/news\/no-more-outfield-for-howard\/298368\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After an unsuccessful outfield tryout in the spring of 2005<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the path to the Show looked blocked for #6. Then, serendipitously, Thome got hurt a couple of months into the season, and Ryan was called up \u2026 and delivered. In only 88 games, the big man won the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2005.shtml#all_NL_ROY_voting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2005 NL Rookie of the Year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with 22 homers, 63 ribbies, and a .288 average. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly, the team identified a young nucleus to build around, along with other homegrown talents <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rolliji01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jimmy Rollins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/u\/utleych01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chase Utley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Thome was traded that offseason to make first base Howard\u2019s spot, and the rest is Broad and Pattison history.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Inside the Numbers<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stats from Howard\u2019s 2006 MVP year really jump off the page: 58 home runs, 149 RBIs, 108 walks, a .425 OBP, a .659 slugging percentage, a 1.084 OPS, 383 total bases, and \u2026 wait for it \u2026 a .313 batting average. That last number may be the most impressive because Howard never hit higher than .279 in another full season with the Phils. Subsequently, his low average became a notorious target of his detractors his last few seasons in Philadelphia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those 58 bombs led the National League (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leaders\/HR_leagues.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of his two NL home-run crowns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Although Kyle Schwarber made a strong run at it last year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/PHI\/leaders_bat_season.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that still stands as the franchise record<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His RBI total also led the NL for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leaders\/RBI_leagues.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first of three times in his career<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. All of the other numbers were the Big Piece\u2019s career highs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: 610px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBv1R0CF00\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3000px; aspect-ratio: 3000\/2126;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h2><b>His Legacy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryan Howard should always be fondly remembered in Philadelphia. The team won the <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/postseason\/2008_WS.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2008 World Series<\/a> as part of five consecutive NL East titles. His yearly averages from 2006 to 2009 are quite remarkable and one of the best power stretches in MLB history: 49.5 homers and 143 RBIs. In terms of games played, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/stories\/mlb\/aaron-judge-fastest-mlb-history-300-homers-numbers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he is the third fastest player ever to 300 homers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/PHI\/leaders_bat.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He stands behind only Michael Jack Schmidt in career home runs for the Phils<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Who knows how things may have been different if not for that devastating Achilles injury in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/postseason\/2011_NLDS1.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 2011 NLDS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Sorry to revisit such a painful memory, Philadelphia fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, Ryan Howard\u2019s career numbers (382 home runs, 1,194 RBIs, a 14.5 WAR, and an .859 OPS) will probably not get him to Cooperstown. However, he is certain to be inducted into the team\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/phillies\/history\/records-stats-awards\/wall-of-fame\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wall of Fame<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> soon. The Big Piece was a foundational piece in one of the halcyon eras of this long-suffering franchise, and he produced one of the best offensive seasons in team history.
